American Golden Plovers in Somerset County, 9-28-2011

Jeff Ellerbusch reports the highest count of American Golden Plovers in Somerset County this season with 9 at what Google Maps labels as: “Wilhousky St., Weston Cross Way, Manville Causeway, and Weston Causeway”. How many names can a road have? This is the short stretch of road connecting County Rd. 533 and Weston Canal Road. In any case the coordinates are 40.528202,-74.585946. The birds were in a plowed field south of the road although many of the Am. Golden Plovers were not visible from the road. 50 Killdeer were also present. A high count of 88 Killdeer were there on Sunday.

  1. Jeff Ellerbusch's avatar Jeff Ellerbusch says:

7 of the 9 Plovers were not “initially” visible from the road… the back of the field, behind the plowed section, is not visible from the road as it dips down out of view. The 7 Plovers flushed from out of view, circled a few times, and then landed towards the front of the plowed section.

The only reason i say this is because i want it to be clear that the only way to view this field is from the road, which thankfully has a generous shoulder. By no means should anyone use the homeowner’s driveway or any part of the property, there is a house on this field.
