Nelson’s Sparrow (again) at Finderne Wetlands, Bridgewater Township, 10-22-2011

Jeff Ellerbusch, Simon Lane, Peter Burke and myself partook in what can be described as an Ellerbusch-whack this morning at Finderne Wetlands in search of Emberizine treasures. Peter located a Nelson’s Sparrow which showed nicely. This same species was found in the same identical location on October 10 by Jeff and seen also by Simon on that date. Other species included White-crowned and Chipping Sparrow, the usual numerous Savannah, Swamp and Song Sparrows, Wilson’s Snipe, Green and Blue-winged Teal, Northern Shoveler, Belted Kingfisher, Yellow-rumped and Palm Warblers, Great Egret as well as American Pipit and Pied-billed Grebe.

A link to a photo of the Nelson’s Sparrow taken by Peter Burke is here.

    Jonathan-
I was there between 8 and 11 AM this morning and had pretty much the same list as you guys did- less the Nelson’s and the Shoveler. I did, however have a Yellow-Breasted Chat that was with small flock of Field Sparrows in a thicket at the rivers edge on the western-most leg of the big bend of the river. Right near where the wooden structure is wedged in between two trees on the river bank. I stood there watching that thicket for 45 minutes hoping to get a decent photo. I could see the bird moving around the thicket , but he only popped into view very briefly a few times during my vigil. No real good shots were taken. A typical, un-cooperative Chat.
