Grasshopper Sparrows, Dickcissel, E. Meadowlark, June 10, 2012

From Susan Treesh:
While conducting a grassland bird survey in northwestern Somerset County this morning I heard (but never saw) a Pileated Woodpecker up in in the tops of tall trees along Long Lane. The bird was drumming and calling repeatedly. Bobolinks and Meadowlarks were present throughout the area in spite of many hayfields’ recent mowings. Also had Grasshopper Sparrows fairly close to the road near the junction of Black River and Lamington Roads and another near the junction of Meadow and Country Club Roads.

On JerseyBirds, Clare Muscara reports a pair of Dickcissels from Negri-Nepote Grasslands in Franklin Township today at noon. This is approximately the same time, almost to the date, that 2-3 individuals showed up at the same location in 2011.

In Washington Township, Simon Lane found an Eastern Meadowlark and Bobolinks in a field behind the Long Valley Middle School on West Mill Road (CR513). Eastern Meadowlark is classified as a species of special concern in New Jersey and is becoming an increasingly difficult species to find in Morris County.
