Rail-less in the Great Swamp N.W.R., June 12, 2012

From Mike Newlon:

Tuesday morning 6/12 in Great Swamp NWR:
Several hours at and near the Friends’ Blind produced only a Double-crested cormorant, a Green heron, and a pair of Rough-winged swallows. On Pleasant Plains Road an Indigo bunting was singing by the house just south of the south gate and the White-eyed vireo was singing just north of the dogleg.

—————
I concur with Mike. No rails or bitterns at dawn this morning at the Friends Blind in the Great Swamp, but a chorus of mosquitoes buzzing my ear. (Jonathan Klizas)

Ah yes, of all the many marvelous winged creatures in the Great Swamp I remember the mosquitoes as being the most plentiful – and the least marvelous! They were also the easiest to identify – by their bite!
