Cackling Geese, a late Green Heron, Lincoln’s Sparrow, Nov. 21, 2012

This afternoon, Jeff Ellerbusch and I saw eleven Cackling Geese in the fenced pasture next to Selody Sod Farm in Montgomery Township. The Cackling Geese were together in a group as the photo below illustrates. There were 1,600 Canada Geese in the same field for comparison. 15 Horned Larks were also in the area as well as Killdeer and American Pipits.

A late Green Heron was seen this afternoon walking along the edge of the pond on Old Harter Road at Spring Brook Country Club, Morris Township. The pond is a water hazard next to an elevated tee of a Par 3 golf hole. eBird shows only 3 records for Green Heron in New Jersey for November, 2012. There was a late December record at Spruce Run in Hunterdon County in 2011. It has appeared on the Boonton Christmas Bird Count in December twice in the 1990’s. I am sure it has records on the Great Swamp Christmas Count. Nonetheless, it was quite the surprise this afternoon for a north Jersey location.

Yesterday, Jamie Glydon saw what must be the continuing Lincoln’s Sparrow of Sayre’s Farm in Morris Township. If it is the same individual, it has been at this location since approximately October 7.
