Geese and Blackbirds in Hillsborough Township, Feb. 19, 2013

It is anyone’s guess as to the actual number of Icterids today at the corn stubble fields at the power line cut on River Road in Hillsborough Township – 10,000? 20,000? Jeff Ellerbusch (a soaking-wet Jeff, I might add) determined that Common Grackles were in the majority followed by Red-winged Blackbirds and Brown-headed Cowbirds. Further down the road, past the Opie Road bridges, a few thousand Canada Geese were on the fields. Jeff pulled out 6 Cackling Geese and a Greater White-fronted Goose from that crowd. 21 Snow Geese were found on River Road.

Incidentally, the Branchburg/Hillsborough Township borders are defined by the winding Raritan River in this area. One frequently crosses from Branchburg into Hillsborough and vice versa so please excuse mocosocoBirds if the actual township locations are bewildering at times.

Lesser Black-backed Gulls at Budd Lake on Feb. 16, 2013

From Mike Hiotis:
Hey Jonathan – My apologies for the late heads up from Budd Lake. On a brief visit between 2-2:45 Sat. afternoon Feb. 16 I was able to pick out 3 Lesser Black-backed Gulls laying among the 1000+/- mixed gull flock. A lone Greater Black-backed was also present so the “dirty” face and hindneck of the Lesser Backs was easy to compare. Also seen on one of the gull pick-up & fly-arounds was a blondish colored Gull which went UID since it was lost in the crowd when they returned to the ice. I often wondered why an Iceland or Glaucous could not be gleaned from the flocks in upper Morris County but I see by a previous post to your site S. Lane was fortunate enough to locate one at the Boonton Reservoir. Well done!

Pine Siskins in Basking Ridge, Feb. 18, 2013

From Jennifer Books:
I have been seeing 3 Pine Siskins at my feeder in Basking Ridge now for 3 days. They have been mixing with a small flock of Goldfinches. In addition, I spotted a Red-breasted Nuthatch feeding on a pine cone in Madison today while walking. He was on a partially fallen tree off of Treadwell Ave.

While in the area I checked out Loantaka Brook Reservation, but a lot of what was seen earlier is now gone and the pond is a lot more frozen over than it was a few days ago. The Hooded Merganser female is still there as is the Great Blue Heron and Mute Swan. But otherwise all I saw was a very large flock of Canada Geese and about 30 Ring-billed Gulls.

Rough-legged Hawks appear to have vacated areas they were frequenting in Morris County such as the Great Swamp NWR and Black Meadows. However, the dark morph Rough-legged Hawk is still present at Rattlesnake Bridge Road in Bedminster Township as witnessed today by Chuck Hantis who comments: “(The Rough-legged Hawk was) very active in the cold wind today…Kestrels and a lot of Red-tailed Hawks also present.”

Pine Siskins and Common Goldeneye at Boonton Reservoir, Feb. 17, 2013

Sunday morning was windy and cold. Viewing Boonton Reservoir and Lake Parsippany was a bone-chilling experience. Simon Lane and I attempted to relocate some of the species found on the reservoir yesterday. All of the Common Mergansers, Ring-necked Ducks and Lesser Scaup seen Saturday were surprisingly absent from the south end. The female Red-breasted Merganser was cooperative but yesterday’s Long-tailed Duck and Iceland Gull were not found. The five Common Goldeneye relocated to the north end of the reservoir where the Rockaway River feeds in. While viewing the Goldeneye, a flock of 10 chattering Pine Siskins flew overhead.

Lake Parsippany held the same waterfowl and gulls as yesterday with 20 Ring-necked Ducks, 5 Lesser Scaup, 1 American Coot, Ring-billed Gulls, Herring Gulls and approximately 200 Canada Geese who looked like they had no intention of going anywhere in the biting wind and cold.

Iceland Gull, Long-tailed Duck, Red-breasted Merganser, Feb. 16, 2013

While searching for the Common Goldeneyes reported earlier in the day at Boonton Reservoir this afternoon, Simon Lane watched a Peregrine Falcon get the gulls up in flight and picked out a 1st year Iceland Gull in the vicinity of the Rockaway River Dam. Relocating the gull later in the day was futile but in so doing this author was able to watch a male Long-tailed Duck fly in to the reservoir and immediately disappear in the distant throng of Common Mergansers and Aythya spp. One Red-breasted Merganser was observed relatively closely (nothing at the south end of Boonton Reservoir is truly “close”) showing a distinctive thin, slightly up-curved bill and diffused chin-neck-chest area. Two weeks ago the reservoir was almost entirely frozen with little besides Geese and Gulls inhabiting the little unfrozen area of water near the island. While still mostly frozen, the growing area of thawed water has an increasing variety of waterfowl.

From Jennifer Books:
My sister and I birded the Great Swamp this morning and saw most of the birds reported yesterday at the Friends Blind. They included 4 Wood Ducks, 7 American Wigeon, a pair of Gadwalls, a Hooded Merganser pair, 2 male Pintails, 5 Green-wing Teal, and a relatively large mixed flock of Mallards and Black Ducks. In addition, we noted a flock of 15 Red-winged Blackbirds and a Killdeer in the Lord Stirling stables equestrian field.

Common Goldeneyes, Redhead, Morris Lakes, Feb. 16, 2013

Common Goldeneye, Lake Musconetcong, NJ, Feb. 16, 2013 (digiscoped by Jonathan Klizas).

Common Goldeneye, Lake Musconetcong, NJ, Feb. 16, 2013 (digiscoped by Jonathan Klizas).

Common Goldeneye (COGO) is not a typical winter waterfowl visitor to Morris County lakes. A high count of 43 on the 1992 Boonton Christmas Bird Count is an anomaly as most year’s totals are in the single digits, if there are any at all. The species certainly occurs annually but in small numbers and at single locations. Yesterday, a report of 3 COGO drakes at Washington Pond in Wharton was eBirded by Cathy Millington. The COGO were not found this morning in Wharton but trips to various Morris lakes show a pattern of a virtual mini-invasion of COGO into the county.

    • At mostly frozen Lake Musconetcong a female Common Goldeneye swam and fed in the northeast section of the lake.
    • The three COGO of Wharton may have transplanted to Budd Lake. There were three drakes there this morning.
    • The southern end of Boonton Reservoir showed 3 COGO drakes and two hens.

Morris Lake summaries:
Lake Musconetcong – 1 female Common Goldeneye, 2 Common Mergansers, 5 Bufflehead, 77 Ring-billed and 2 Herring Gulls, etc. A small flock of Red-winged Blackbirds, Common Grackles and Brown-headed Cowbirds roosting in a tree continue the gradual movement of Icterids into northern New Jersey after being virtually absent all winter. Furnace Pond in Netcong was nearly empty, surprisingly, with 3 Am. Coot, 10 Ring-necked Ducks and 2 Bufflehead.

Budd Lake – As it has been for weeks, the southwest shore is open, the remainder of the lake is frozen. Where there were over 2,000 Canada Geese there a few weeks ago, there are none now. At least the waterfowl are visible. The drake Redhead continues. Here are the totals:
American Wigeon – 7
Am. Black Duck – 10
Northern Pintail – 16
Redhead – 1 drake
Ring-necked Duck – 35
Lesser Scaup – 15
Bufflehead – 2
Common Goldeneye – 3 drakes
Hooded Merganser – 5
Common Merganser – 35
American Coot – 1
Ring-billed Gull – 100
Herring Gull – 20

Mt. Hope Lake is entirely frozen.

Boonton Reservoir – most of the waterfowl and gulls were viewed from the south end at Waterview Plaza on Rt. 46. This is NOT an easy location to view from.
Northern Pintail – 1
Ring-necked Duck – 20
Scaup sp. – 20
Bufflehead – 12
Common Goldeneye – 5 (3 drakes; 2 hens)
Common Merganser – 55
Ring-billed Gull – 27
Herring Gull – 5

Lake Parsippany – mostly frozen with the center portion thawed.
Mute Swan – 3
Ring-necked Duck – 55
Lesser Scaup – 9
Bufflehead – 2
Hooded Merganser – 1
Ruddy Duck – 1
Ring-billed Gull – 30
Herring Gull – 6

Friday field notes, Feb. 15, 2013

From Mike Newlon:
A few signs of early spring at Great Swamp NWR and Lord Stirling Park, with some birds not present on Feb. 10: The Friends Blind produced Mallards/Black Ducks, a pair of Mute Swans, Wood Ducks, Hooded Mergansers, 3 female Bufflehead, one Coot; a few Pintails and Wigeon. On Pleasant Plains Road a few each of Red-winged Blackbirds and Grackles. Near the Bluebird lot six Eastern Bluebirds were perched on boxes. Two males were on the ground, pummeling each other with bills and wings. All flew off, later a pair returned briefly. At White Bridge Road a large flock of Red-winged Blackbirds/Grackles were in the trees along the brook by the Raptor Trust. At the equestrian field 300-400 Canada Geese but no fancy species, also four Horned Larks and a Killdeer.

Simon Lane adds 2 American Woodcock from Pleasant Plains Road in the Great Swamp NWR.

Andrew Lucas eBirded 5 American Woodcock from the Griggstown Grasslands.

From Tim Vogel:
Friday 2/15 – Lake Parsippany
Large open patch in the middle.
Pied-billed Grebe – 2
Wood Duck
Scaup (sp.) – 2
Bufflehead – 4
Ring-necked Duck – 20
Common Merganser – 4
A fair number of gulls – nothing jumped out at me
Lots of Canada Geese – nothing of note
—————
From Jennifer Books:
I was over at Loantaka again today for the Great Backyard bird count and I spotted a pair of Hooded Mergansers, 2 Gadwalls, 1 Lesser Scaup, and 5 Green-wing Teal. In addition, there were 2 Song Sparrows, a Great Blue Heron and a large flock of Ring-bill Gulls as well as Canada Geese.
Hope others are participating in the bird count this weekend! It would be great if some of the rarities that have been around get reported.

Common Redpolls at Chimney Rock, Feb. 14, 2013

Jeff Ellerbusch had a group of Common Redpolls calling as they flew over the parking area of the Chimney Rock Hawkwatch this morning. Jeff’s description: “Vocal, flyover group – no visuals due to pretty severe fog (group sounded pretty large). Mostly chet-chet calls (fairly similar to wwcr), and also a few, hard, rattling trills.”

Redhead on Budd Lake, Feb. 13, 2013

From Alan Boyd:
Hi Jonathan – The drake Redhead that has been moving around the Mt Olive area was on Budd Lake this morning. The only open water continues to be in the SW corner of the lake near the Pax Amicus Theater on Pine Grove Rd.

Also on the water were 4 American Wigeon and 16 Lesser Scaup.
