Lapland Longspurs, Snow Bunting in Morris County, Jan. 13, 2013

Today, January 13, 2013, was the 29th running of the Southwest Morris Winter Bird Count founded and administered by Dave Harrison. Today’s species count stands at 79 with one party’s totals remaining to be included. Washington Township and part of Mt. Olive Township in Morris County, is the area that our party covered. The region was blanketed in dense fog that never lifted and seemed to become thicker in some places as the day progressed. Birds were scarce throughout the morning – absent in many areas. That changed in the mid afternoon. Washington Township, consisting of Long Valley, Middle Valley and Schooley’s Mountain, has lots of agricultural fields. These are mostly on private lands but one can occasionally find an accessible field to explore. The fields behind the Long Valley Middle School were the location of the following species:

200 Horned Larks
60 American Pipits
2 Lapland Longspurs
1 Snow Bunting

The Lapland Lonspurs were often in the same field of view. The Snow Bunting was close by. When the Lark flock took flight en masse, the Snow Bunting stuck out with its white wing patches. An adult White-crowned Sparrow was with White-throated Sparrows and Dark-eyed Juncos in the hedgerow separating the farm field from a tree nursery.

These are not drive-up species. They were located at the very top of the hill from CR 513. Measurements on a Google map call it over 2,000 feet (about .4 mile uphill) in a straight line from a parked car but does not account for walking uphill through corn stubble or making a detour to avoid the corn stubble. The actual route taken was measured at 2,800 feet – one way.

If visited, one should use caution as this is a small but busy middle school as well as the township’s school bus depot. Carrying a scope and wearing binoculars may seem odd in this context. In fact, weekday visits may not be a smart idea.

Y8M9, origins of a Canada Goose, Jan. 12, 2013

A mocosocoBirds post from January 5 describes a Canada Goose with an orange neck collar and the code, Y8M9, found by this author on December 28 at Black Meadows in Hanover Township and then on January 5 at Loantaka Brook Reservation by Jamie Glydon. Tim Vogel apparently had the same bird today at Melanie Lane Wetlands which is north across Route 10 from Black Meadows. Both Jamie and I submitted reports to the Patuxent Wildlife Research Center. Today, we received the report of the origins of Y8M9.

Y8M9 is a female, banded on July 8, 2009 at Varennes, Quebec, Canada (coordinates: 45.75,-73.41667). This is a suburb, north of Montreal. She was too young to fly when banded. This makes her almost four years old in 2013. Here is a map showing her travels. From Varennes to Morris County is approximately 300 miles. We can only guess where she has been roaming since 2009.

Redhead, Common Yellowthroat, Rough-legged Hawk, Black-crowned Night-Heron, Jan. 12, 2012

From Alan Boyd:

Hi Jonathan,
When the fog cleared late this afternoon I had a single drake Redhead on Budd Lake. It was fairly close to Rt 46 opposite Timberline Rd.
Among the 3000 or so Canadas were 8 Snow Geese, 30 Ring-necked Ducks, 35 Common Mergansers, 8 Lesser Scaup, and 3 Ruddys.

From John J. Collins:

I went to the Great Swamp around Noon time today and found a COMMON YELLOWTHROAT at the ditch that runs under Pleasant Plains Road when you walk from the Overlook Parking Lot to the bridge over Great Brook. Also present at that location was a WINTER WREN and, to the south end of the ditch, a ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK perched in the trees. At the pond further along towards the bridge were many HOODED MERGANSERS (you could hear the males making the “pop-growl” calls!!!) and RING-NECKED DUCKS. At the overlook itself I saw and heard an immature RED-SHOULDERED HAWK perched in the dead trees in the former heronry and three EASTERN BLUEBIRDS flying about the marsh.
—————

From Jody Hey:

Was in Finderne meadows for a couple hours this afternoon and flushed a juvenile Black-crowned Night-Heron (BCNH) from the pond below the historical society house.

The bird flew into a tree where I watched it for awhile. Markings : legs greenish; bill partly yellow, as well as plumage top, underside and wings in flight, all were consistent. Behavior-wise, flight, and movements while perched all fit a BCNH.

Some of the other birds:
White-crowned Sparrows
American Tree Sparrows (lots)
American Kestrel

Cackling Goose, Lesser Black-backed Gull, 1,000s of birds at Budd Lake, Jan. 9, 2013

The center portion of Budd Lake is open water while the majority of the lake surface is ice. When I arrived at the lake at 3:30 this afternoon there were well over 2,000 Canada Geese (CANG) on the ice and in the water. Gull numbers were modest with 175 Ring-billed Gulls, 20 Herring and 2 Great Black-backed Gulls. 2 adult Snow Geese were obvious among the many CANG. 4 Common Mergansers seemed lost in the throng of geese. It was late in the day and skein after skein of Canada Geese streamed in from the south. Their approach and landing patterns were specific to their group and were interesting to watch. Small groups of geese started taking off towards the south concurrent with other geese coming in for a landing. Budd Lake was a veritable gooseport only without a control tower. The CANG were thick but searching methodically through the multitude finally turned up a stubby-billed, short-necked, pint-sized Cackling Goose.

The count of CANG was at 3,000 when at 4:15 in diminishing light, hundreds upon hundreds of mostly Herring Gulls started arriving from the north. They favored landing at the far side of the geese creating a long line of white and gray interspersed with an occasional dark speckle. It was these dark speckles with which I was interested. This is the time of year Lesser Black-backed Gulls turn up at Budd Lake. After spotting some Great Black-backed Gulls, one of the dark speckles revealed a beautiful adult Lesser Black-backed Gull standing in the front row of larids, its bright yellow legs readily apparent in the grayscale color scheme of ice, geese and gulls. As I left, more geese, or perhaps the same that had left earlier, continued to arrive.

The count:
Snow Goose – 2
Cackling Goose – 1
Canada Goose – 3,500 (conservative)
Mallard – 4
Common Merganser – 4
Ring-billed Gull – 200
Herring Gull – 700 (conservative)
Lesser Black-backed Gull – 1
Great Black-backed Gull – 7

Rough-legged Hawks at Black Meadows, Jan. 9, 2013

Mike Britt reports 2 light phase Rough-legged Hawks this morning at Black Meadows in Hanover Township.  3 Northern Harriers (one gray ghost) were also present.

At Florham Park Fields, a male American Kestrel continues to hunt the area. This Kestrel has been at this location since December, at least. Mike says there is “loads of vole evidence here.”

Pine Grosbeaks not refound; misc. notes, Jan. 8, 2013

Five birders spent the late afternoon searching the Gillette Trail area in Washington Township. The Pine Grosbeaks found this morning by Mike Britt were not relocated. The field across from the barn held 25 American Pipits but no Horned Larks.
—————
From Tim Vogel, Jan. 7, 2012:
FYILake Parsippany has reopened in the area of the east beach with a long patch crossing almost to the other side. On hand were: Canada Goose, Mute Swan, Mallards and some Ring billed Gulls.
Historically Lake Parsippany has produced many rare gulls when these conditions occur.
Also on Saturday I had 3 Red-breasted Nuthatches in what remains of the pines of Jonathan’s Woods.
Regards
Tim Vogel

Great Swamp-Watchung Ridges CBC Results from Dec. 15, 2012

The Great Swamp-Watchung Ridges Christmas Bird Count was conducted on December 15, 2012.

The following notes are  from the compiler, Pete Axelrod:

We saw a total of 91 (plus 1 count week) species and 12672 individuals. 75 people participated.

3 new species were added to this list: White-winged Crossbill, Northern Saw-whet Owl and Green Heron.

Eagles were seen in the Great Swamp (2) and Canoe Brook (4) areas. 2 teams in the Swamp each saw likely the same 2 eagles so I recorded these as 1 per team.

Not so common birds included: Snow Goose (2 flying flocks), White-winged Crossbill, Common Redpoll, Pine Siskin, Wilson’s Snipe, American Woodcock, Long-eared Owl, Carolina Chickadee, Ruby-crowned Chickadee, Red-breasted Nuthatch, Hermit Thrush, Grey Catbird, White-crowned Sparrow and Rusty Blackbird.

Ravens and Winter Wrens were seen by many teams.

Both Vultures were low. The roost at Meyersville Circle was empty!

Red-Headed Woodpeckers were missed, again.

Where were the Kestrels, Red-winged BBs and Grackles (1 only).

Editor’s note: Many thanks for all of the effort and work Pete has put into the successful operation of the count over the years. He is handing over the compiler duties to Simon Lane commencing with the 2013 count.
