Raptors in the Great Swamp, April 9, 2012

New Jersey is experiencing an unusually lengthy period of low humidity and windy conditions, especially for Spring. This makes the situation completely ripe for fires. The irony of this is not lost on anyone who lived through the unforgettable wet weather of 2011. It seems that everyday there is another red flag warning for a “Fire Weather Warning is in effect” issued by the National Weather Service. New Jersey Forest Fire trucks cruised Pleasant Plains Road in the Great Swamp N.W.R. this afternoon looking for telltale signs of a blaze. Numerous fires across the state are reported at nj.com. In Morristown, winds were from the west south west at 20 M.P.H. with gusts measured at 44 M.P.H. The relative humidity was 17%! This writer used lip balm today for the first time all year because it was so windy and dry.

Nevertheless, immune to our concerns, the raptors are moving. Morris County’s first three Broad-winged Hawks of 2012 were seen this afternoon by Simon Lane, Jim Mulvey and myself at the overlook on Pleasant Plains Rd. in the Great Swamp. Also seen were the two “local” Bald Eagles, an Osprey, 3 Northern Harriers, Sharp-shinned and Cooper’s Hawks, 3 American Kestrel, 7 Red-tailed Hawks, 6 Black Vultures, wind-blown Wilson’s Snipe and the typical species of the area.

Common Ravens nesting in Hillsborough; field notes from the week, April 5, 2012

Hillsborough Township has seen Common Ravens with some regularity within its borders during the past year. As of yesterday, Common Ravens become confirmed nesters in the township with the finding of their nest in a high-rise environment. See the pictures below. The nest location is marked by the green circle in the high-tension tower photo. This is the second known Raven nest in Somerset County.

Field notes:

  • Great Egret was seen today on Woodfern Road in Hillsborough.
  • American Pipit, 20 Wilson’s Snipe and Killdeer were in the mud puddle on River Road, Hillsborough (opposite Roberts Street in Bridgewater).
  • Joe Pescatore reports two Purple Finches in Bernardsville today, April 5.
  • Today at Duke Island Park, Jeff Ellerbusch had a Blue-gray Gnatcatcher.
  • An American Bittern has been at Glenhurst Meadows in Warren Township during the week.
  • Pine Warblers have been present near the gated bridge on Pleasant Plains Rd. in the Great Swamp the past two mornings at least.
  • Hawks, in general, have been increasingly noticeable as their migration period gets into gear.
  • Following the waterfowl fallout of last weekend up to 2 Common Loons and an Osprey have been on Lake Parsippany this week.
  • Tom Justesen saw 2 Horned Grebes on Mt. Hope Lake April 4.
  • Jamie Glydon heard a Northern Bobwhite of questionable origin the past two days at Bee Meadow Park in Hanover Township.

American Bittern at Glenhurst Meadows, April 1, 2012

This post from Ellen Waldstein is from Sunday, April 1:

Hi Jonathan,
This morning, at about 7:30 am, my husband and I saw a Bittern at the first pond at Glenhurst in Warren. It was near the bridge then flew across to some bushes at the other side where it stayed with its head pointing straight up to the sky. Quite cooperative!

Later this morning there was a massive clean up effort with volunteers so there are hopes that the brook will flood less. Unfortunately, lots of ATV’s and a back hoe only made the trails muddier. Thanks for this site! – Ellen Waldstein

Editor’s note: This is the first report of any Bittern or Rail species in the Mocosoco region in 2012.

Common Loon, Osprey at Lake Parsippany, April 1, 2012

From Tim Vogel:

Thanks Jamie for the great reports.
I was out of state this weekend but managed to get to Lk. Parsippany late today. Unable to locate the noted birds but would like to report a Common Loon plus Tree Swallows. The Tree Swallows were boiling into the south end of the lake. I counted over 100 Tree Swallows working the south end. Lots of Coots and Ruddys. I wish I had a scope. Who gave the waterbirds the approval to be in the middle of the lake.

Regards.
