This morning I was very excited and surprised to find a Yellow-billed Cuckoo in the forest to the east of Ridge High School. This is a first for me on the high school grounds, which actually are a very productive place to bird.

Dickcissels continue at Negri-Nepote Grassland Preserve, Franklin Township, 6/13/2011

This evening around 5 pm at Negri-Nepote Grassland Preserve I had 3 Dickcissels (2 male, 1 female) between the pond and the farmhouse. I had terrific views of all three from the mowed path, and the males were very easy to locate because of their singing.

White-eyed Vireo and Bobolink at Glenhurst Meadows, 6/13/2011

White-eyed Vireo and Bobolink at Glenhurst Meadows June 13.

The Vireo was singing along the Brookside trail just S of the first bridge/Cross trail.
The Bobolink sang from the fence at the Community Garden, then moved to the big tree just N of the barn.
Six Great Egrets and two Great Blues were perched in trees long the powerline cut, where the Brookside trail meets the Passaic River.

Dickcissels at Negri-Nepote Grassland Preserve, Franklin Township, 6/13/2011

At least two Dickcissels of the four reported on Sunday, June 12 by Ted Chase on JerseyBirds remain at the Negri-Nepote Grasslands in Franklin Township. Jeff Ellerbusch had two later in the day on June 12 (male and female) and I had the same two this morning, June 13. The birds were between the pond and the farmhouse easily viewed from the mowed paths.

Red-headed Woodpecker at the Tourne, Boonton Township, 6/12/2011

Good Woodpecker day – Red-bellied, Flicker, Downy , Hairy, Pileated
Red-headed Woodpecker continues.
Still seeing only one bird but did observe it carrying food to a hole.
Hole is best seen from northwest side of pond. I stood on the big rock just past the original dam. The tree is in the middle, very tall and thin.

Observed standing in the unpaved lot for the proposed Shoppes at Randolph (another fancy strip mall)

Bridgewater Mississippi Kite report from Tuesday, 6/7/2011

In response to Ben’s report, Karen Thompson had a Mississippi Kite in Bridgewater near Route 206 on Tuesday and there was one seen at Sunrise Mountain on Monday, plus several hanging around Cape May area recently. Where are they nesting?
