Shorebirds on Opie Rd., Hillsborough Township, 4-26-27-2011

Frank Sencher Jr. found 3 Greater Yellowlegs, 1 Killdeer, 4 Wilson’s Snipe and 1 Least Sandpiper on Opie Rd. in Hillsborough Township Tuesday, 4/26. The Least Sandpiper and two of the Wilson’s Snipe were still present this morning, 4/27, in a puddle across from the Neshanic Valley maintenance area on Opie Rd. Also, a Ring-necked Pheasant was heard calling.

Here is a poorly lit photo of the LESA and the WISN:

Is Wilson’s Snipe the same as Common Snipe? Both Sibley’s and Peterson’s guides only mention Common. Thanks- Ken

    • Hi Ken – Wilson’s was split from Common Snipe by the AOU a few years ago but as you mentioned some field guides list it as Common. So the current taxonomy has Gallinago gallinago, or Common Snipe, occurring in Eurasia and Gallinago delicata, or Wilson’s Snipe, occurring throughout North America. – Jonathan
