Some weekend birds in Morris County, 5/7-8/2011

On Saturday, May 7, Jamie Glydon had 2 Bobolinks at the Thysson Krupp property at 306 Columbia Turnpike in Florham Park. This is a local site of interest that I stop in whenever I go to Florham Park. It looks like an old field and pasture where two retention ponds have been built. The company plant is way in the back and cannot be seen from Columbia Turnpike. The back end of the property seems to abut parts of Morristown Airport. Spotted and Solitary Sandpipers, Killdeer, Wilson’s Snipe, Am. Kestrel, E. Bluebirds (13 at one time last fall), E. Kingbird, Wild Turkey, Savannah Sparrows, and various Swallow species have been seen here. Hooded Mergansers and Green-winged Teal have visited the ponds as well as Great Blue Heron and Great Egret. Bobolinks have passed through here the past two years in May. A pair of Spotted Sandpipers were here until at least the last week of May last year. The only Snow Goose I saw this year in Morris County was here. In other words, if you are in the area, stop in and have a look.

Jamie also had a Lincoln’s Sparrow at Troy Meadows on Saturday.

A visit today, May 8, to parts of Mahlon Dickerson produced:
Canada, Nashville,Northern Parula, Worm-eating, Black-throated Green, Black-throated Blue, Black-and-white and Yellow Warblers, American Redstart, Ovenbird and Common Yellowthroat. Red, Warbling and Yellow-throated Vireos, Wood Thrush, Veery and Purple Finch were some other species present today.

    Jon,
Can you walk into the Thyssen Krupp area? Or do you have to bird from the edge of the road?
I know that my employer would not be happy to have random strangers walking around their property, looking for birds. But it certainly sounds like a very productive spot.

    thanks, tom
