Dickcissel, Grasshopper Sparrows, Blue Grosbeak at Negri-Nepote Grasslands, June 13, 2012

From Alan Boyd:

Hi Jonathan,

This afternoon there was one male dickcissel singing on top of a bush to the right of the trail just before you get to the blind by the pond. A male blue grosbeak and a male orchard oriole were on the wires that go out to the house in the middle of the field. I also had at least three grasshopper sparrows.

I spent some time at the beaver swamp at Tourne Park in the morning but I didn’t get the red-headed woodpeckers. A single female hooded merganser was mixed in with some mallards and wood ducks there.

I too went to Negri-Nepote today. The Dickcissel was again courting two females and I saw at least 6 Grasshopper Sparrows (the best area for these is past the Dickcissel area to the north-east). Also present were a Willow Flycatcher (near parking lot on east side), Northern Rough-winged Swallow (by the pond) two Prairie Warblers (also near parking lot but on east side). Dozens of Field and Chipping Sparrows are feeding fledglings. The wind kept the more interesting butterflies down however I did see a single Checkered White
