This was Day 10 of the juvenile Pacific Loon at American Road, Morris Plains. As of 6:30 p.m. in a miserable wet and slippery snow shower, the loon was the only bird this viewer could find in the pond.
The adult Pacific Loon at Lake Parsippany was viewed by several birders today.
The Pacific Loon at Boonton Reservoir was not relocated today although only one attempt is documented on eBird by David Bernstein. The reservoir is a difficult place to bird and there are many hiding places.

Jeff Ellerbusch found a female Red-breasted Merganser today in the Raritan River seen from the Delaware and Raritan Towpath in Franklin Township. 33 Bufflehead and 80 Tree Swallows were also tallied.

Don’t pack away the winter clothes yet. The forecast for the near future in our area does not bode well for spring migrants although it may help keep some loons around.

February 2013 will go down as tied with 2003 for 9th warmest February on record for land/ocean surface combined, according to the National Climatic Data Center. Records go back to 1880. Jonathan, I encountered 14 Killdeer today on the South Street playing fields in the Loantaka Brook Reservation.
That’s a reliable spot for Killdeer in the late winter/early spring. Now if only a Northern Lapwing would fly over and…
