Long-tailed Duck, Surf Scoters, Horned Grebes, Apr. 17, 2013

Waterbirds

Last night’s frontal passage brought a sprinkling of waterbirds in the mocosocoBirds region. The male and female Surf Scoters found in the morning at Boonton Reservoir by Mike Wolfe remained throughout the latter part of the day. 80 Horned Grebes were also in the reservoir (Simon Lane). This must be a county record. It far surpasses any amount found in eBird for Morris County.

A Long-tailed Duck was found on the Raritan River along the Delaware and Raritan Canal Towpath in Franklin Township (Jeff Ellerbusch).

Other Notes

Morris County’s first Green Heron in 2013 was found this afternoon at Melanie Lane Wetlands (Jamie Glydon). And the county’s first Black-and-white Warbler for 2013 was eBirded by Jim Gilbert today from the Great Swamp NWR.

From John J. Collins:
I saw my first BLUE-HEADED VIREO of the year this afternoon while walking the Raritan River Greenway (it was located about 100 yards west of the Hibernia Mine Bridge from the canal path). Other FOY birds were 3 BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHERS in trees along the river and a SPOTTED SANDPIPER by the former dam site on the river. A LESSER YELLOWLEGS was on the cobbles in the river at the foot of Robert St.

From Leslie Webster:
This morning brought 9 White-Throated Sparrows and 4 Chipping Sparrows to our Madison backyard feeder. The former is a high number for us and we’ve never had Chippies before. An after 3 PM walk in Loantaka Brook Reservation turned up 13 more White-throats, an undercount, I’m sure. There were three Blue-Gray Gnatcatchers in LBR, as well, with a possible 4th, but not wanting to double-count, I’m sticking with 3. 8 Ruby-Crowned Kinglets, no Golden-Crowned Kinglets, and just 2 each Palm Warblers and Yellow-Rumped Warblers were observed.
[Edior’s note: Add a Solitary Sandpiper and a humongous Snapping Turtle in the fenced-in pond]

Surf Scoters at Boonton Reservoir, Apr. 17, 2013

It is reported that the overnight weather conditions created a waterbird fallout at Spruce Run Reservoir in Hunterdon County this morning. Some of this spilled into Morris County as Mike Wolfe found 2 Surf Scoters at Boonton Reservoir today. They were viewed from the south end of the reservoir. It could be productive to check any of the many lakes in Morris County today.

Bonaparte’s Gulls at Boonton Reservoir, Apr. 16, 2013

Bonaparte’s Gulls at Boonton Resevoir

14 Bonaparte’s Gulls (BOGU) were sitting on the water at the north end of
Boonton Reservoir at 4:45 this afternoon. I went back to the car to get the camera and when I returned, the gulls were gone.

On Sunday, Apr. 14, Dave Harrison saw 37 Bonaparte’s Gulls at approximately 9:45 in the morning, also from the north end.

Simon Lane and I had 8 BOGU at 7:15 a.m. on Saturday, Apr. 13. Tom Smith had one later that day at 11:30. The point is, if you want to see Bonaparte’s Gulls in Morris County, the time and place is now at Boonton Reservoir. All of the known sightings this past week are from the north end. Of course, Little Gull would be a nice find, too.

Purple Finches in Long Valley

From Ken Hart:
Around my house and along Black River Road in Long Valley today, I saw two Purple Finches, and a small flock (6?) of Palm Warblers. Also, continuing Louisiana Waterthrushes, Red Breasted Nuthatch, Chipping Sparrow, and yesterday, a Brown Creeper. Plus, a Black Bear, who knocked down the feeder– guess it’s time to take it in for the summer.

Mississipi Kite, Vesper Sparrow, Green Heron, Apr. 14-15, 2013

Mississippi Kite at the Raritan River, Sunday, Apr. 14

One report that missed yesterday’s post was that of a Mississippi Kite (MIKI) in Franklin Township. Jim Hamer viewed the MIKI from the Delaware and Raritan Canal Towpath on Sunday, April 14. It was north of Landing Lane putting it in Somerset County. It was also moving and was not relocated.

A Bounty of Rustys at Troy Meadows, Sunday, Apr. 14

Another unintended omission from yesterday was the 410 Rusty Blackbirds (RUBL) seen at Troy Meadows by Mike Britt and Mark French. Most of the RUBL were seen flying out of the marsh in varying sized flocks at daybreak.

Vesper Sparrow at Great Swamp NWR

A Vesper Sparrow was reported from the overlook on Pleasant Plains Road today by Jim Gilbert. It is probably the same Vesper Sparrow found on Apr. 14.

Green Herons at Lord Stirling Park and Finderne Wetlands

David Bernstein observed a Green Heron this morning at Lord Stirling Park.
Vicki Schwartz eBirded a Great Egret, Green Heron and Greater Yellowlegs from Finderne Wetlands this afternoon.
These represent the first Green Herons reported in the mocosocoBirds region for 2013.

Other Notes

From Margo Beller:
Hello, Jonathan. This afternoon at Morris County’s own Frelinghuysen Arboretum, a fine place to go when work gets to be too much, I struck out on warblers but found both types of kinglet (2 Ruby-crowned and many, many more Golden-crowned), a Hermit Thrush, a Yellow-bellied Sapsucker (along with Flicker, Red-bellied and Downy Woodpeckers) and, most welcome, a Red-breasted Nuthatch near the Pinetum. A Red-tailed Hawk also soared by.

Late Saturday afternoon, during a short stop at the Griggstown Grasslands in Franklin Township, Somerset County, a Kestrel hunted. The grass is still short and the most abundant birds were Red-winged Blackbirds and Turkey Vultures, but there were also Bluebirds at some of the boxes, and also Red-tailed and a Sharp-shinned Hawks.

The following account from Troy Meadows is a compilation of reports from Mike Britt, Tom Smith and Jonathan Klizas. Initials will be used as necessary.

The first Virginia Rails (2) and Marsh Wren of 2013 in the mocosocoBird region were found (MB). Hermit Thrushes, and Ruby-crowned Kinglets were widespread. A Yellow-bellied Sapsucker and 6 Rusty Blackbirds (JK) were in the woods near the power line on Troy Meadows Rd. Swamp Sparrows are abundant. Palm Warblers were sparse and the only warbler species found. Dark-eyed Juncos and American Tree Sparrows are still in the Meadows in small numbers.

Vesper Sparrow at Great Swamp NWR

From Mike Newlon:
Great Swamp 4/14: Overlook had Myrtle and Palm warblers, Phoebe, Brown Thrasher, one Vesper Sparrow (flushed by a pair of joggers), 4 Purple Martins among the Tree and Barn swallows at the pond.

Old Meyersville Rd had many Spring Azures, two Mourning Cloaks, and an anglewing sp.

Other Notes

From Susan Treesh:
Large movements of Palm Warblers (very large!), Ruby-crowned Kinglets, and Swamp Sparrows at Glenhurst Meadows; small movement of Yellow-rumped Warblers. Glenhurst is perhaps 40% flooded right now, knee boots a necessity if going beyond first bridge!

Alan Boyd eBirded a Common Loon, Horned Grebe, and 40+ Bufflehead from Budd Lake.

Simon Lane reported Greater Yellowlegs, Spotted and Solitary Sandpipers and continuing large numbers of Wilson’s Snipe from Melanie Lane Wetlands.

Various eBird listings from Scherman Hoffman sanctuary in Bernardsville had Winter Wren, Louisiana Waterthrush, Palm, Yellow-rumped and Palm Warblers.

Late in the day, Jeff Ellerbusch and Zach Batren viewed an American Bittern flying over the marsh at the overlook on Pleasant Plains Road, Great Swamp NWR.

Grebes, Gulls, Loons, Hawks, et al, Apr. 13, 2013

Grebes, Gulls and Loons at Boonton Reservoir

Distant Red-necked Grebe, Boonton Reservoir, Apr. 13, 2013 (iPhone photo by Simon Lane)

The early morning started with two Red-throated Loons in flight spotted by Simon Lane at the north end of Boonton Reservoir. Joining Simon at the Reservoir, he and I watched 7 Horned Grebes float towards the north in a single line. Soon thereafter, Simon located an alternate-plumaged Red-necked Grebe floating towards and then passing the Horned Grebes. While trying for some hopelessly distant and difficult digiscoped photos, a few gulls were seen flying into the reservoir. Interestingly, at least one had a black hood. Before long, 8 Bonaparte’s Gulls were sitting in the water. As they are wont to do, the Bonaparte’s Gulls got up and left the area after a short time (10-15 minutes). Morris County may have one report of Bonaparte’s Gulls a year if it has any at all; likewise with Red-necked Grebe. Getting both species in the same field of view at the same time was very special indeed. At least 4 Common Loons, numerous Bufflehead and a Pied-billed Grebe were also at the Reservoir. The photos at the top of the page are what we call the “Boonton” view, i.e. distant, distorted, difficult but eminently identifiable!

Red-breasted Mergansers at Lake Parsippany

Red-breasted Mergansers and Ruddy Ducks at Lake Parsippany, NJ, Apr. 13, 2013 (photo by Jonathan Klizas)

8 Red-breasted Mergansers were on Lake Parsippany this morning. There must be accounts consisting of greater totals somewhere in the annals of Morris County birding, but if so, they remain unknown. According to the contemporary record keeper, eBird, 8 Red-breasted Mergansers represents the highest total in one place at one time recorded in Morris County.

Mt. Hope Lake

Mt. Hope Lake has a deceptively quiet look when you first drive up to the lake’s edge. Perhaps the 54 Mute Swans dwarf everything else on the water. Once you start scanning (a scope is an absolute requirement at Mt. Hope) you realize there was more on the water than initially realized. Case in point: one could have missed the raft of 280 Ruddy Ducks barely above the water line and camouflaged by the tree and shore background behind them. Also present were 3 Wood Ducks, 7 Gadwall, 26 Ring-necked Ducks, 9 Bufflehead, 7 Pied-billed Grebe, 1 Horned Grebe, Northern Rough-winged, Barn and Tree Swallows and the resident Bald Eagle.

Swifts, Swallows, Hawks and Red-throated Loon on the Raritan

Somerset County is fortunate to have Jeff Ellerbusch manning the lookout on the Delaware and Raritan Canal Towpath in Franklin Township. He continuously contributes interesting records to Somerset Counting birding. Following on the heels of yesterday’s impressive swallow and warbler numbers along the Raritan Flyway, Jeff found the mocosocoBirds region’s first Chimney Swift (6), Cliff Swallow (first confirmed), Broad-winged Hawks (6) and Spotted Sandpiper for 2013. Somerset County’s first Red-throated Loon of 2013 was also reported. The 7 Red-breasted Mergansers Jeff recorded represent a Somerset County all-time high according to eBird data. Winter Wren,  Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, both Kinglets, Palm, Pine and Yellow-rumped Warblers round out the list of 71 species.

Hawks

The first push of Broad-winged Hawks in 2013 came through the mocosocoBirds region today – from the Raritan River to the Watchung Mountains and Kemble Mountain in Morris Township.

Other Field Notes

110 Wilson’s Snipe were flushed at Melanie Lane Wetlands. All of these occurred in the northern end of the wetlands meaning there are more in other sections of this location that went uncounted. This also represents the highest known tally in Morris County history according to eBird data and the highest count in New Jersey in 2013. A Common Raven seen today is a first for this location. Tree, Northern Rough-winged and Bank Swallows were cruising the pond or roosting on branches.

3 Solitary and 1 Spotted Sandpiper were seen at Loantaka Brook Reservation  in the “back” pond. 2 Blue-winged Teal and 6 Green-winged Teal were in the lake (Jonathan Klizas).

Savannah Sparrows and a Vesper Sparrow were reported from Troy Meadows (Tom Smith).

Remember the corporate pond on American Road in Morris Plains that hosted a juvenile Pacific Loon in March? This pond has also had Long-tailed Duck and Horned Grebe in previous years as well as a variety of ducks and even a shorebird or two. Today it added an alternate-plumaged Common Loon to its amazing list (Jamie Glydon).

From Sandra Escala:
At about 5 p.m. today I had one Raven at the Wegman’s parking lot in Bridgewater.  I know Ravens can be seen at Chimney Rock, but Wegman’s is on the other side of town.  I guess it’s not that far as the Raven flies . . .

From Kristi Reed:
Negri-Nepote highlights: In the evergreen section of the forest my friend Bob and I saw 20 plus Golden-Crowned Kinglets. I also saw 3 White-throated Sparrows in that area. Also: Five Greater Yellowlegs at pond, many Chipping Sparrows and Tree Sparrows, Kestrels, and more.

Bonaparte’s Gulls join Red-necked Grebe in Boonton, Apr. 13, 2013

8 Bonaparte’s Gulls are currently with the Red-necked Grebe at the north end of Boonton Reservoir.
And as Bonaparte’s will do, they flew off at 7:45 after sitting on the water for 10 minutes.

Swallows and Warblers on the Raritan, Apr. 12, 2013

Scoters are Gone

Friday’s storm did not produce any unusual water birds in the mocosocoBirds region. Yesterday’s Scoters were absent from Boonton Reservoir. 7 Common Loons and a Horned Grebe were at the north end of the Reservoir. The same ducks were at the western Morris lakes (Budd and Musconetcong) as have been for the past few weeks. Hundreds of Tree Swallows and one Common Loon were at Lake Hopatcong.

Swallows and Warblers

Meanwhile, on the Delaware and Raritan Canal Towpath in Franklin Township, Jeff Ellerbusch found a bounty of swallows and warblers with totals as follows:
Northern Rough-winged Swallow – 200
Tree Swallow – 1,500
Barn Swallow – 40
Palm Warbler – 125
Pine Warbler – 9
Yellow-rumped Warbler – 250

Green Heron

From George Eschenbach:
Hi Jonathan – Had a first of spring Green Heron near the pond by the bridge on Pleasant Plains Road in the Great Swamp. Sighting approximately 1:30 PM today, April 12.
