Morris Plains Pacific Loon is gone; Great Egret and Pine Siskin in Somerset Co., Mar.21, 2013

After twelve consecutive days, it appears that the juvenile Pacific Loon has flown from the pond on American Road, Morris Plains. Despite searching for twenty-five minutes at 5:00 p.m. by me and by Tom Johnson later, the loon did not appear. If the loon’s departure is true, then: farewell young Gavia pacifica. Your visit is memorable for many.

Reported earlier in a post, Tim Vogel did see the adult Pacific Loon at Lake Parsippany today. The Boonton Reservoir adult is unreported today, probably due to a lack of searching. Here is the Loon Map.

From Tim Vogel:
Thursday March 21, 2013 – 7:55 AM
Lake Parsippany – Pacific Loon – seen from East Beach – middle of lake – actively diving and hard to observe.
Plenty of Common Mergansers, Ring-necked Ducks.
– Tim Vogel, Denville

[Editor’s Note: No reports about the other two Morris County Pacific Loons, presumably because no one has looked.]

With the vernal equinox came some local arrivals, some continuing visitors and a wintry blast from the north that puts a chill onto thoughts of spring.

Jim Mulvey captured an image of Morris County’s first Osprey of 2013 (according to eBird data) at Osborne Pond near the Great Swamp NWR.

All three Morris County Pacific Loons were observed late this afternoon. The Morris Plains juvenile (Day 12) and the Lake Parsippany adult were in their usual places. The Boonton Reservoir adult was missed at the north end but was later viewed, albeit at a distance (everything at the south end is at a distance), from the south end of the reservoir. These loons like to use the entire body of water they are visiting. With the Boonton loon, this means more misses than gets. Here is the Loon Map.

Jeff Ellerbusch found a flock of 35 Rusty Blackbirds in Lord Stirling Park, near White Bridge.

From Ellen Waldstein:
Hi Jonathan, There were plenty of Woodcock at Glenhurst Meadows this evening, calling and flying overhead. We’ve been observing at this spot for many years, and there may be a record number there this year! – Ellen Waldstein.

From Zach Batren:
A quick drive through Colonial Park (Franklin Township) this morning resulted in:
7 Ring-necked Ducks
2 Lesser Scaups
1 Hooded Merganser
Canada Geese
1 Belted Kingfisher
and!
1 Bald Eagle soaring to the NE

From Dave Emma:
Lake Musconetcong had some decent variety today. There were still the same amount of Hooded and Common Mergansers that have been there for the past few weeks, but today I notice far more Buffleheads, about 20 American Wigeons, and 3 Pied Billed Grebes. A juvenile Bald Eagle also flew over when I was there. – Dave

The Morris Daily Loon Report: at least two Pacific Loons are present, Mar. 20, 2013

The juvenile Pacific Loon of American Road, Morris Plains and the adult at Lake Parsippany are both reported today. The Boonton Pacific Loon is probably in the reservoir but has not been reported yet today. As mentioned in yesterday’s post, The adult in Boonton Reservoir can hide in the area of the dam for long periods.

All three Morris County Pacific Loons were viewed today.
– The Morris Plains juvenile completed Day 11 on American Road.
– The Lake Parsippany adult was with 470 Common Mergansers, a female Red-breasted Merganser, an alternate plumaged Common Loon, a Common Goldeneye drake picked out by Simon Lane and the Ruddy Ducks, diminishing number of Ring-necked Ducks and American Coots that are on the lake.
– The Boonton Reservoir’s adult Pacific Loon showed itself again. It was viewable from the footbridge accessed from Reservoir Drive. Although more closely seen than Sunday, it is still a long distance away. At times it will float into the area by the dam and be hidden for varying lengths of time. Three Common Loons are also at the reservoir, one in alternate plumage. Unless it is an aberration, the photo seems to show a chin-strap on the Pacific Loon.

This was Day 10 of the juvenile Pacific Loon at American Road, Morris Plains. As of 6:30 p.m. in a miserable wet and slippery snow shower, the loon was the only bird this viewer could find in the pond.

The adult Pacific Loon at Lake Parsippany was viewed by several birders today.

The Pacific Loon at Boonton Reservoir was not relocated today although only one attempt is documented on eBird by David Bernstein. The reservoir is a difficult place to bird and there are many hiding places.

Here s the Loon Map.

Jeff Ellerbusch found a female Red-breasted Merganser today in the Raritan River seen from the Delaware and Raritan Towpath in Franklin Township. 33 Bufflehead and 80 Tree Swallows were also tallied.

Don’t pack away the winter clothes yet. The forecast for the near future in our area does not bode well for spring migrants although it may help keep some loons around.

Here is an interesting data read regarding the global temperature for February 2013. February 2013 will go down as tied with 2003 for 9th warmest February on record for land/ocean surface combined, according to the National Climatic Data Center. Records go back to 1880. No Loon reports here. See the following link for the Daily Loon update for today:
Three Pacific Loons in Morris County.

1,500 Common Mergansers were on a frigid Split Rock Reservoir this morning. As is typical with this body of water, not much else was here besides 4 Bufflehead, Ring-billed and Herring Gulls.

Mt. Hope Lake had 175 Ruddy Ducks, 34 Mute Swans, 26 Ring-necked Ducks, 15 Bufflehead, 1 Hooded and 2 Common Mergansers, 2 Bald Eagles (one on the nest), and a Winter Wren picked out by Simon Lane.

Lake Musconetcong had 8 American Wigeon, 26 Bufflehead, 3 Hooded and 20 Common Mergansers, 1 Pied-billed Grebe and 1 American Coot along with the usual gulls, geese and Mute Swans.

Clark Drive in Mt. Olive Township had a female Common Goldeneye in the marsh with American Black Ducks and Bufflehead.

As Simon Lane and I arrived at Budd Lake, all of the 500-1,000 Canada Geese lifted off and out of the lake. The lake had 2 Northern Shovelers, 8 Redhead, 2 Greater Scaup (male and female), 21 Lesser Scaup, 150 Common Mergansers, 2 American Coot and a meager 25 Ring-billed Gulls. 5,000 gulls were at the lake on February 25.

There were zero Ring-necked Ducks at Brady Road Bridge today. There was practically nothing besides a pair of Bufflehead. What a dramatic difference from a week ago when 1,100 were tallied.

Bertrand Island at Lake Hopatcong had a Horned Grebe and 5 Tree Swallows acting like Storm-petrels dancing on the water. Keep in mind the temperature was at the freezing point and the wind was biting. It was a morning for frozen fingers.

There are other birds besides loons at Boonton Reservoir. Simon Lane watched an adult Great Cormorant flying from east to west near the Heron and Cormorant Island earlier today.
