Split Rock Reservoir

Split Rock Reservoir remains a mystery as to how such a scenic spot can have so few birds. 1,500 Common Mergansers were there one week ago which is a highlight for the reservoir. This morning there were 10 Common Mergansers, 6 Bufflehead and 1 Ring-billed Gull – that is it.

Mt. Hope Lake

The Mt. Hope Lake totals follow:
Mute Swan – 72
Gadwall – 36
Mallard – 2
Ring-necked Duck – 2
Lesser Scaup – 2
Bufflehead – 4
Hooded Merganser – 7
Ruddy Duck – 125
American Coot – 8

The Bald Eagles are on the nest.

Lake Musconetcong

Visibility was poor on Lake Musconetcong and Budd Lake this morning. The snow was falling at a difficult-to-see-halfway-across-the-lake rate and was also melting on the eyepiece of the spotting scope and the binoculars. It was difficult viewing to say the least.

2 Eastern Phoebes in the snow was an interesting sight at Lake Musconetcong. 15 Buffleheads, 12 Common Mergansers, 6 Ring-necked Ducks and typical species were all that could be seen.

Budd Lake

The waterfowl at Budd Lake were cooperative as most were close to the north end. The totals:
Redhead – 6
Ring-necked Duck – 35
Greater Scaup -2 – male and female, distinctive frontal lobe sloping to the back, wide nail in the bill. There may have been others among the Scaup raft and could have been fodder for debate, despite the poor visibility, but only dead-on obvious ones were counted.
Lesser Scaup – 100
Common Merganser – 300
Red-breasted Merganser – 3 total – at least 1 drake at north end (see picture); at least 1 male, 1 female at south beach before flushing.
American Coot – 1 – I wonder if this is the same lone Am. Coot present at the lake all winter into spring

Lake Parsippany – the Pacific Loon is gone

Apparently the snow was only in the western part of Morris County mid-morning. There was no precipitation at all at Lake Parsippany later in the morning. A sub-adult Bald Eagle flew over the lake and stirred all of the gulls into the air.

The Pacific Loon can be officially thought of as gone. It was not seen yesterday by a number of people and was not seen today. 375 Common Mergansers remain as well as 13 Hooded Mergansers, 11 Ruddy Ducks, 10 American Coot and the usual species in the lake.

The Pacific Loon was not seen at Boonton Reservoir this morning.

Other Field Notes

Simon Lane found a female Red-breasted Merganser (RBME) with Common Mergansers at Ravine Lake, Far Hills. It has been a productive year for RBME in both Morris and Somerset Counties.

From Leslie Webster:
The farm ponds across Loantaka Road from the Loantaka Brook Reservation parking lot have been yielding some interesting ducks. Yesterday there were 5 Ring-necked ducks and 2 Hooded Mergansers. Kitchell Pond, in addition to 160 Canada Geese and 7 Ring-billed Gulls, had 6 Green-winged Teal, down from 18 a few days ago.

From Zach Bantren:
Took a drive though Colonial Park in Franklin Township on my way home:
3 Wood Ducks,
12 Ring-necked Ducks
12 Mallards
1 Hooded Merganser
1 Double-crested Cormorant

Not exactly off-topic: What Causes Hearing Loss, Mar. 25, 2013

Good reading if you want to hear those thin, wispy warbler songs and call notes (or anything else for that matter) when you get older – and in the context of this New York Times article that applies to everyone older than one day.

Pacific Loon reported at Boonton Reservoir, Mar. 24, 2013

From Michael Mayer:
I’m visiting from out of town and stopped to look for the two Pacific Loons. I was unsuccessful in finding the loon on Lake Parsippany around 11:00 a.m. today but I saw the Pacific Loon on the (Boonton) Reservoir around 12 noon. After a few minutes it disappeared though, presumably around the corner to the right.

Peregrine Falcon; Pacific Loon at Lake Parsippany Gone?; Field Notes, Mar. 24, 2013

Peregrine Falcon at Troy Meadows

Other than Song Sparrows, Red-winged Blackbirds and Canada Geese, Troy Meadows sounded like Silent Spring this morning. A surprise flush of a Peregrine Falcon from the meadow was exciting. The falcon flew to a perch on a snag in the marsh and almost immediately an adult Bald Eagle cruised over, probably one of the residents of Troy Meadows. The raptors were indifferent to each other and the eagle continued on its flight. The Peregrine Falcon stayed on its perch for a minute and then got up and flew in the direction of South Beverwyck Road (just as I was setting up for a digiscope photo, of course).

Pacific Loon Not Found at Lake Parsippany

From Rosemarie Widmer:
I stopped at Lake Parsippany today 3/24/13, at 2:30 and did not find the Pacific Loon.

Rosemarie was not alone. At least four other people searched for the adult Pacific Loon at Lake Parsippany early this afternoon. No one was successful in locating it. The loon was seen yesterday and is known to be elusive but a more likely scenario is that this loon may have flown. The lake will continue to be checked.  The lake has 19 Ring-necked Ducks, 1 drake Red-breasted Merganser, 335 Common Mergansers, 6 Hooded Mergansers, 20 Ruddy Ducks, a Pied-billed Grebe and 10 American Coot.

Melanie Lane Wetlands

The water level at Melanie Lane Wetlands remains on the high side. Only 2 Wilson’s Snipe were seen. Last year at this time there were at least 30. The usual American Black Ducks, Mallards and Canada Geese were present along with 10 Gadwall, 20 Green-winged Teal, 6 Northern Shovelers, 2 Killdeer, and 1 American Kestrel.

Pacific Loon; Saturday Field Notes, Mar. 23, 2013

The adult Pacific Loon at Lake Parsippany was seen by Harvey Tomlinson and Bill Boyle today. A brief look at the north end of Boonton Reservoir did not reveal the adult Pacific Loon that has been known to be there for one week.

From John J. Collins:
I birded the Torpey Atheletic Complex in Somerville, Somerset County early this afternoon. (This area along the Raritan River is accessed from East Main Street via Loeser Ave – follow the signs to the complex.) There is a road east of the parking area that leads down to the flood plain where there are two additional ball fields. It was here that I saw 2 GREAT EGRETS, 2 BLUE-WINGED TEAL, at least 26 GREEN-WINGED TEAL, and at least 26 KILLDEER.

[Editor’s Note: The area accessed via the Torpey Atheletic Complex is actually the western end of Finderne Wetlands in Bridgewater Township.]

Sunset Lake, Mountain Lakes
Ring neck Ducks 120
Hooded Mergansers 8
Gadwall 18
AmericanWigeon 10
Bufflehead 6
Ticks 2. A tough lake to work and easy to drive by but a big flock of ducks were visible. This forced me to abandon my “round bottom” approach, a rare moment, during duck watching season, thus the ticks.

Pacific Loons, Friday field notes, and feeling cold, Mar. 22, 2013

As posted earlier today, the two adult Pacific Loons of Morris County remain. There were no reports of anyone checking the Morris Plains location for the juvenile Pacific Loon which was not seen at all on March 21.
—————
A male and female Blue-winged Teal are with Green-winged Teal, Northern Pintails, American Wigeon and other ducks at the Friends Blind at the Wildlife Observation Center of the Great Swamp NWR. Wood Frog vocalizations were numerous in the background along with Spring Peepers.
—————
Great Egrets are entering the mocosocoBirds area. Two seen in Somerset County yesterday were joined by another at Finderne Wetlands today (Jeff Ellerbusch). Another fly-by Great Egret was seen with 23 Great Blue Herons at the overlook on Pleasant Plains Road, Great Swamp NWR. A male Northern Harrier, “Gray Ghost”, was seen late in the day as well (Simon Lane). A number of people witnessed the two sub-adult Bald Eagles that hung out at the overlook today.
