Barn Swallow in Somerset Co.; Field Notes, Mar. 31, 2013

Barn Swallow in Somerset County

The first Barn Swallow of 2013 in the mocosocoBirds regon was reported from the Delaware and Raritan Towpath today (Jeff Ellerbusch). Bonaparte’s Gulls are reported in Middlesex County just south of Somerset County so expect a report of them in Franklin Township soon.

Field Notes

A male and female Blue-winged Teal continue this evening at Kitchell Lake at Loantaka Brook Reservation.

From Leslie Webster:
Tree Swallows have made it to Kitchell Pond in Loantaka Brook Reservation! Wood Ducks are checking out tree cavities in the woods, where the Brown-headed Cowbirds are also establishing themselves. At Kitchell Pond, there were no Ring-billed Gulls for the first time since the winter, but I spotted the two Blue-winged Teal, along with a Gadwall pair, 7 Green-winged Teal, and a female Hooded Merganser. Also in a “BC Chickadee” confirmation, discovered it was a Golden-Crowned Kinglet. Ring-necked Ducks continue in the farm pond across Loantaka from the LBR parking lot.

From Larry Baum:
Over the last couple of days I’ve seen a Swamp Sparrow twice (have numerous, close photos) and heard a Great Horned Owl once, both near the Wildcat Ridge Wildlife Management Area of Rockaway Township.

Over the same period I also saw a Fox Sparrow at Mt. Hope Pond and heard a Common Raven calling from the Green Pond cliffs just before Green Pond Road hits Route 23 as well as saw a Great Blue Heron in the swamp below.

Tremendous numbers of Ring-necked Ducks were seen on many local ponds with the highest numbers at the Lake Denmark side pond and the Wildcat Ridge Beaver Pond. (For whatever reason, as fairly typical, none at Splitrock Reservoir or the Jacobs Road Beaver Pond.) Smaller numbers of Buffleheads, Double-crested Cormorants (18 at Mt. Hope Pond), Hooded and Common Mergansers and a single Gadwall were found in various ponds in the region.

Only a single White-throated Sparrow so far instead of the usual many.

The Wild Turkeys in the photo at the top of this page were displaying and strolling down Parkside Drive, Parsippany – Turkey in the ‘Burbs, as it were. Troy Meadows is on the backside of the houses on the street.

What seems like the first southerly wind in weeks finally came to our region overnight. The migration push was slight but what was exciting to this observer was the noticeable increase in song. Field and Fox Sparrows joined the chorus of Song Sparrows, American Robins and Red-winged Blackbirds at Troy Meadows.

A close encounter with a singing Winter Wren was a highlight of the morning at Jonathan’s Woods in Denville Township. Singing Fox Sparrows, Dark-eyed Juncos and a pair of climbing and vocalizing Brown Creepers were along Ford Road.

Pacific Loon Update

Tom Smith eBirded the Pacific Loon at Boonton Reservoir this morning so it continues being cooperative.

Weather

Yesterday and today’s high temperatures exceed the historical average high for our area, the first time this has happened since March 13. Here is a chart and graph with March’s weather data courtesy of AccuWeather.

This week’s weather forecast in the Morris/Somerset area calls for below normal temperatures this week with winds of a north and westerly component. The next southern push may not come until approximately April 8.

Pacific Loon, other field notes, Mar. 30, 2013

Pacific Loon at Boonton Reservoir

The adult Pacific Loon of Boonton Reservoir is more cooperative of late, spending a good deal of time in the north end of the reservoir. It was seen both morning and afternoon today. There were two Common Loons, one in alternate plumage, and are at least four in the reservoir. All are a distant look but identifiable from the footbridge . The heronry on the island has a growing number of Double-crested Cormorants. 65 were counted this afternoon and that does not take into account the many that are out feeding and flying around.

Other Field Notes

From Ken Hart:
At least two Eastern Meadowlarks were present today, at dusk, in the field at the corner of Lamington and Black River Roads.

Tom Smith eBirded 2 Blue-winged Teal at Loantaka Brook Reservation. Several Blue-winged Teal continue at the Friends Blind in the Great Swamp NWR

From Jennifer Books:
This afternoon my sister saw the two Pine Siskins in our yard again and she noted that one appeared to be trying to feed the other. Cannot help but wonder if this is a pair and if they will possibly stick around and maybe even nest here.

Video: Bald Eagle defends nest from Red-tailed Hawk, Mar. 24, 2013

Duke Farms Bald Eagles

2012’s Superstorm Sandy destroyed the Bald Eagle nest at Duke Farms in Hillsborough Township. The eagles liked the neighborhood so they built a new nest close by. The Duke Farms staff was able to position a camera for live streaming as they did for the original nest. On March 24, a Red-tailed Hawk made the mistake of its life by attempting an attack on the nest. See the results in the video link below. (Increase the effect my making the video full screen. Click the double arrow icon in the bottom right of the video screen next to the word Share).

Pacific Loon, Blue-winged Teal, Mar. 29, 2013

Pacific Loon at Boonton Reservoir

The adult Pacific Loon (PALO) of Boonton Reservoir was viewed today in both the morning (Mike Wolfe) and the afternoon (Simon Lane). 4-5 Common Loons were seen as well. Assuming it is the same one all along, the Booonton PALO was found on March 17, the third of the Pacific Loon Trio of Morris County and is the only one remaining. It has been in the area the longest: 13 days. It is also the most elusive of the trio.

The juvenile PALO of Morris Plains, possibly the most photographed Pacific Loon in digital history, was found on March 9 and was last seen on March 20 a total of 12 days.

The Lake Parsippany PALO was positively identified on March 16 but actually found on March 15. March 23 was the date of its last appearance for a total of 9 days.

Blue-winged Teal in Great Swamp NWR

An impressive 7 male and 3 female Blue-winged Teal were seen at the Friends Blind at the Great Swamp NWR this afternoon (Simon Lane). Also present were various numbers of Wood Duck, Gadwall, American Wigeon, American Black Duck, Mallard, Northern Shoveler, Northern Pintail, Green-winged Teal, Ring-necked Duck, Bufflehead and Hooded Merganser. 5 of the Blue-winged Teal and 1 Green-winged Teal are in the following photo by Simon Lane.

Other Field Notes

250 Ring-necked Ducks were in the various ponds of Duke Farms in Hillsborough Township (Jeff Ellerbusch).

6 Northern Shovelers continue at Melanie Lane Wetlands (Jamie Glydon). Gadwall, Green-winged Teal, American Black Ducks and Wilson’s Snipe have also been present this week.

Blue-winged Teal are in the mocosocoBirds area. Two were seen (and photographed) at Finderne Wetlands today. Terry Carruthers reports 2 males and 1 female from the Friends Blind at the Wildlife Observation center of the Great Swamp NWR.

Terry also observed a light-phase Rough-legged Hawk at 11 a.m. on Columbia Turnpike near Morristown Airport.

In Branchburg Township (on the border with Hillsborough Twp.), Jeff Ellerbusch tallied 72 Wilson’s Snipe on Studdiford Lane. 89 Horned Larks were on Opie Road.

Jeff Ellerbusch found the first Tringa of 2013 in the mocosocoBirds region today – a Greater Yellowlegs at Duke Farms, Hillsborough Township. This is ten days later than 2012’s first Greater Yellowlegs. Not satisfied with that discovery, Jeff also located the first two Northern Rough-winged Swallows of 2013 in mocosoco, also at Duke Farms. These arrived on the same date as in 2012.

Pacific Loon Update

As posted earlier this morning, the Pacific Loon at Boonton Reservoir continues. It was viewed from the north end from the footbridge accessed from Reservoir Drive. For a good length of time, it was in the same field of view as a Common Loon in basic plumage. Your chances are 50/50 at best at locating the Pacific Loon as there are many places a loon can hide at the reservoir. A spotting scope is required. This is the last remaining Pacific Loon of the three that visited Morris County in the past few weeks.

Scaup Identification

Scaup identification presents a challenge for most birders. The pictures below show a classic male Greater Scaup with Lesser Scaup at Budd Lake today. These are terrible photographs which is the whole point. How often do you have optimum viewing conditions when trying to separate any close species especially Greater and Lesser Scaup. Head shape and the size of the nail of the bill are key points to focus on. The Greater Scaup’s rounded head with the peak at the front is evident in the photos. Lesser Scaup’s peak is toward the back of the head. Consulting any good field guide should give adequate description of the differences in these two species. Helping out matters in the series of photos below is that the Greater Scaup is obviously larger.

Other Notes

From Jennifer Books:
Hi Jonathan – After two failed attempts to locate the Blue-wing Teal (a life bird for me) reported at the Friends Blind in the Great Swamp recently, today I finally got lucky thanks to another birder who had already spotted it when I arrived. He also had a spotting scope which made viewing the drake even better! We only saw the drake but he was gorgeous, especially when he started preening and you could see the colors on his wings. In addition to this bird I also saw 3 male Wood Ducks, about 19 Green-wing Teal, 2 male Pintails and 1 female, 2 pairs of American Wigeon, about 11 American Black Ducks, and a few mallards. Most were seen from the actual blind but a few appeared in the wetland area on the trail that is crossed via a bridge. So happy to have finally seen the Blue-winged Teal!

On another note, I have NOT seen the Pine Siskins today at my feeders, but I did see them the past few days. We will have to see if they have left or I just missed them.

Pacific Loon continues at Boonton Res. , Mar. 26, 2013

And then there was one. The Boonton Pacific Loon is the last of three Pacific Loons of Morris County remaining. It is presently being viewed from the Reservoir Drive footbridge at the north end of Boonton Reservoir. The Pacific Loon was in the same field of view as a Common Loon in basic plumage for a period of time. The loons are distant but viewable. The water is calm today.
