Am. Pipits, Rough-legged Hawk, field notes, Jan. 26, 2013

For all of the rare bird species in New Jersey this winter, other species are also noteworthy for their unusual frequency. American Pipits continue to appear regularly throughout the mocosocoBirds region in 2013. 50+ were at the Bernardsville Quarry this morning. Jamie Glydon found another 14 at Florham Park Fields. See Mike Britt’s post below for an updated count from that location. There are at least eleven reports of American Pipit on the eBird database from the mocosocoBirds region so far in 2013. At this time last year, there were none.

From Mike Britt:
I took a quick ride through Pleasant Plains Road (Great Swamp NWR) and observed perched Kestrel, Rough-legged Hawk (light morph) by the 90 degree bend, and an adult Bald Eagle was perched along the far right edge of the rookery marsh.

The American Pipit flock at the Florham Park fields now numbers around 30, at least 40 American Tree Sparrows were observed in a large flock, I flushed a Killdeer from a mostly frozen drainage ditch (not a big deal in Hudson Co. but cool here in frigid January), and at least one light morph Rough-legged Hawk continues…it was hunting along the airport runways and the disjunct field that is furthest…you have to walk through the woods or take the marsh edge all the way to the left. – Mike
—————
Jamie Glydon had the alleged, same Rough-legged Hawk along CR 510, Columbia Turnpike, in the morning. A light-morphed Rough-legged Hawk was also reported last week from the same location.

From Dave Emma:
Hi Jonathan – The ducks on Furnace Pond reported by Mr. Boyd yesterday are still there: Redhead, Bufflehead, Am. Coot, Ring-necked Ducks. I also saw 1 Lesser Scaup there this morning. – Dave

Redhead in Netcong, Jan. 25, 2013

From Alan Boyd:

Hi Jonathan – This morning there was a drake Redhead at Furnace Pond, likely the bird from the Clark Drive pond which is now frozen over. Furnace Pond is on the Musconetcong River at the outflow of Lake Musconetcong. This pond can often have a lot of waterfowl when the lake freezes over. I usually view it from behind the firehouse in Stanhope but I’ve heard that it can also be accessed from Jenny Lind Drive on the Netcong side. About 50 Ring-necked Ducks were also present along with a Coot and some Buffleheads.

Rough-legged Hawk at Great Swamp NWR, Jan. 23, 2013

From Chuck Hantis:

Drove threw the Great Swamp today and was lucky to see the Rough-legged Hawk…Maybe the cold weather brought them back. Spotted on Pleasant Plain Rd…Awesome to see.

More than 4 and 20 Blackbirds in Somerset Co., other field notes, Jan 21, 2013

Blackbirds are relatively scarce in the mocosocoBirds region since December. Christmas Bird Count totals bear this out (RWBL = Red-winged Blackbird; BHCO = Brown-headed Cowbird; COGR = Common Grackle).

CBC RWBL BHCO COGR
Boonton 421 1 3
Great Swamp 85 100 1
Somerset County 2 1 1

The blackbird drought ended today. After observing over 2,000 Canada Geese in the South Branch of the Raritan River by the Opie Road/River Road Bridge (Hillsborough and Branchburg Townships), a ride towards Norz Farm on River Road in Hillsborough showed that a large number of Icterids were blanketing the road. The multitude was covering the corn stubble. A cloud of black would occasionally lift off, circle the field and re-position itself in the cornfield. Hundreds of Brown-headed Cowbirds perched in a group of trees next to the road. Many local birders have yet to see a Brown-headed Cowbird in 2013. The Red-winged Blackbird flock numbered at least 2,000 and probably more. An estimate was made of one cloud when another equally large cloud was observed to the east. A smaller number of European Starlings were present as well. Just as soon as they appeared, they were gone.

A lack of blackbirds was also discussed last winter. That scarcity ended with the Common Grackle invasion of last February. See that post here. This year there were no Grackles.

In Morris County, Simon Lane reports that the drake Canvasback continues in the back pond of Florham Park Fields, the single drake Redhead is still at the Clark Drive ponds in Mt. Olive Township, and a light-morph Rough-legged Hawk was seen flying in the vicinity of Morristown Airport on Columbia Turnpike (CR510). Get the ducks while you can considering the freezing weather in the forecast this week.

Morris Lakes: Aythya sp., Lesser Black-backed Gull, Cackling Goose; field notes, Jan. 20, 2013

Anyone out in the field today knows what the graphical representation below of today’s wind feels like (click on the images to see a larger version):
Wind Map Jan. 20, 2013

The Canvasback found January 19 by Jamie Glydon continues at the rear pond at Florham Park Fields. 21 Ring-necked Ducks and half of the Canada Geese flew up and away at 8:05 a.m. It was thought the Canvasback was with them. It either came back or never left because it was still there this afternoon.

A single male Redhead was found at the ponds at Clark Drive in Mt. Olive Township. This is the second year in a row that this corporate pond has hosted Redheads. Last winter’s high count was 19.

Budd Lake was windy, very windy. All of the ice is melted except for a rim around the lake. The Canada Geese were sequestered in the western section of the lake, protected from the wind. The conservative count was 3,500. You can add 1,000 or two if you like and I won’t argue. One Cackling Goose floated in the dense goose raft. It is visible in the photo below pointed to by the arrow (click on the image for a larger version).

A Lesser Black-backed Gull was on the ice with hundreds of Herring and Ring-billed Gulls. Is this the same individual viewed last week and the year before and occasionally hops on over to nearby Lake Musconectcong?

Indian Lake in Denville had 46 Lesser Scaup, 10 Bufflehead, 4 Hooded Mergansers and 25 Ruddy Ducks.

Mt. Hope Lake in Rockaway Township is partially unfrozen but a small group of 32 Mute Swans, 4 Gadwall, 4 mallards, 2 Lesser Scaup, 9 Hooded Mergansers, 3 Ruddy Ducks and some Gulls was all that was there.

Lake Musconetcong is partially thawed. 7 Mute Swans, 2 American Wigeon, 15 Mallards, 15 Bufflehead, 2 Hooded Mergansers, 175 Ring-billed, 60 Herring and 4 Great Black-backed Gulls were all that was found.

My scope and I were nearly blown over while scanning Lake Parsippany this afternoon. 7 Hooded and 34 Hooded Mergansers were counted but the wind won out and this birder retired for the day.

—————-
From Ken Hart:
Between 1-2PM today I located at least a dozen American Pipits behind Long Valley Middle School on CR 513/West Mill Rd. The birds were in the hedgerow directly behind the tennis courts. Also present were hundreds of American Crows, one American Tree Sparrow, three Black Vultures, and two Common Grackles.

As mentioned in a previous post, it’s probably not a good idea to hike around here with a scope/binoculars while students are in school.

—————
From Susan Treesh:

Hi Jonathan – a quick trip around the pond at Negri-Nepote turned up a flock of 7 Eastern Meadowlarks just north of the path around the pond. Also had a near-adult kestrel and a juvenile bald eagle.

From Zach Batren:
Stopped by the Hutchenson Memorial Ponds (Franklin Township) off of Van Cleef this morning: Found 2 male, 1 female Lesser Scaup mixed in with about 40 Ring-Necked Ducks.

E. Meadowlarks, Co. Redpolls, in Somerset County, Jan. 19, 2013

From Andrew Lucas:

I had a flock of 10 Eastern Meadowlarks at the Griggstown Grassland Preserve around mid day. They were in the field to the west south-west of the parking lot in the second portion of the field beyond the un-mowed strip of tall grass that divides the field.

——————-
Simon Lane and Harvey Tomlinson eBirded 5 flyover and calling Common Redpolls at the Somerset County Environmental Education Center (Lord Stirling Park) parking lot this morning.

——————-

Terry Carruthers reports that the American Woodcock on Pleasant Plains Rd. is displaying at dusk through Jan. 17.

Canvasbacks in Morris, Jan. 19, 2013

From Jennifer Brooks:

Around 11:30 this morning my sister and I spotted 1 male Canvasback duck, 3 male Green-winged teal, and 9 male and female Gadwall ducks at Loantaka Brook Reservation. They were in the pond off of Kitchell Road in Morristown. In addition, there were a large number of ring-billed gulls and 1 mute swan.

Winter Wren, White-crowned Sparrow, American Pipit, Jan. 18, 2013

Three species of note this winter are Winter Wren, White-crowned Sparrow and American Pipit. There is nothing remarkable about the sightings of these species by themselves but rather the frequency with which they are being seen this season as well as their numbers. Since the autumn, Winter Wrens seem as numerous as many birders can ever remember in the northern New Jersey area. It seems every time one goes in the proper habitat one will encounter a Winter Wren. For December 2012, the eBird database has 25 sightings of Winter Wren for Morris County with a high count of 8, and other highs of 5 and 4. The grand total of Winter Wrens for December 2012 is 54. In December 2011, there were only 3 reports with 1 being the high count. The grand total for December 2011 is 3.

Somerset County, especially Hillsborough Township, has a broadly distributed wintering population of White-crowned Sparrows. If you can find a hedgerow on Hillsborough Rd., Beekman Lane, Orchard Drive, various places on Duke Farms, and numerous other locations, there is a better than average chance you will find White-crowned Sparrows there right now. This is not unique to 2012-13 but an annual situation for this species in Somerset County.

American Pipits are reported in the autumn and rarely in the winter in Morris and Somerset Counties. Winter totals for a report are usually of a single digit quantity if at all. So, it is noteworthy that in the past week, 60 American Pipits were seen in Long Valley, Morris County and over 130 were observed by Jeff Ellerbusch at Duke Farms in Somerset County today.
