Terry Carruthers informed mocosocoBirds that Vinnie Nicolaro reported 5-6 Evening Grosbeaks from the feeders at Sherman Hoffman Sanctuary in Bernardsville at lunchtime today. The Grosbeaks were accompanied by 25 Pine Siskins. The Grosbeaks stayed for 15 minutes and then departed. That is all that is known at this time.

Sparrows and a pet duck at Troy Meadows, Oct. 20, 2012

Morning after the rain – from Troy Meadows Road, Parsippany, NJ, Oct. 20. 2012 (Photo by Jonathan Klizas)

Is anyone missing a Mandarin Duck? A drake was found this morning in Troy Brook accessed from the Troy Meadows Road entrance to Troy Meadows in Parsippany. The escapee flushed before a photo was taken.

Sparrows are plentiful in Troy Meadows. An Ammodramus sp. must be here somewhere but it was elusive today if present at all. Song, Swamp and White-throated Sparrows dominate. Here are the numbers from a relatively small sampling:
Song Sparrow – 60
Lincoln’s Sparrow – 2
Swamp – 30 (probably 100s more in the cattail marsh)
White-throated Sparrows – 40
White-crowned Sparrows – 2 juveniles

3 Dark-eyed Juncos worked the dirt road. Yellow-rumped and Palm Warblers and one Pine Warbler were active. A Northern Harrier hunted the marsh. Two American Kestrels perched on snags. Golden and Ruby-crowned Kinglets and at least one Rusty Blackbird were present. This area is a major Starling/Blackbird/Grackle roost in the evening as witnessed on Wednesday when over 1,000 of these birds were congregating.

At least 5 Purple Finches were in the area. I came upon Dave Hall leading a New Jersey Audubon Society field trip who said they had more Purple Finches in a different section.

Pine Siskins: where the seeds are, Oct. 19, 2012

From Terry Carruthers:

Hi Jonathan,
Do pine siskins carry an app with the locations of good feeders on them? This morning (Oct 19th) I noticed one pine siskin on my feeder (Whitebridge Rd, in the Great Swamp), along with a female purple finch, before I left for work. I got home early around 2 pm and there were eight present. By late afternoon I had sixteen at the feeders (I put out a second to reduce the squabbling and bickering), along with the solitary purple finch. I have noticed this ‘news gathering’ facility with Eurasian siskins (Carduelis spinus) in Ireland but I wonder why the purple finches don’t do the same. I know they’re around too in small numbers. So many questions, so little time…..

Red-headed Woodpecker at Black River WMA, Oct. 18, 2012

From Alan Boyd:

Hi Jonathan,
This morning I had a juvenile Red-headed Woodpecker near the parking lot on Pleasant Hill Rd that is near the intersection with Flanders Rd. It was perched briefly in the top of a tree and then it flew north across Pleasant Hill Rd and out of the WMA. The extensive white on the back half of the wings and on the tail caught my eye from a distance.

Not many sparrows considering the numbers that others have been reporting lately. I did have a late house wren and about 15 hermit thrushes.
