Sparrows at Finderne and Hanover, Oct. 17, 2012

The season’s first Fox Sparrow and latest Wilson’s Warbler were both found at Finderne Wetlands this morning by Jeff Ellerbusch. The sheer number of sparrows is really the story. To quote Jeff: “I only covered a small fraction today…(there were) more sparrow numbers this morning than I’ve ever seen there…I really low-balled the numbers, flushed over 50 Savannah Sparrows at one point.”
Here are some of the numbers. Keep in mind that only a small section of the wetlands was sampled. Who can tell how many birds are truly there.

Chipping Sparrow – 4
Vesper Sparrow – 3
Savannah Sparrow – 175
Fox Sparrow – 1
Song Sparrow – 75
Lincoln’s Sparrow – 3
Swamp Sparrow- 120
White-throated Sparrow- 30
White-crowned Sparrow – 9

Also: Green-winged Teal, Killdeer, Wilson’s Snipe, Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, Am. Pipits, Purple Finches, Spine Siskins, Golden and Ruby-crowned Kinglets, Marsh Wren, Blackpoll, Wilson’s, Palm and Yellow-rumped Warblers, etc.
=============================
Jamie Glydon reports the continuing Vesper Sparrow was seen at Veteran’s Memorial Park in Hanover Township this morning.

Clay-colored Sparrow at Finderne; E. Meadowlarks in Morris, Oct. 14, 2012

From Tom Smith:
This morning at Finderne Wetlands I found a Clay-colored Sparrow by the pond near the entrance. I put a photo at http://www.flickr.com/photos/tsmzth/8086941018.
Finderne had plenty of other birds, including many Savannahs, Songs, Swamps, Palms, and a few Siskins.

Glenhurst Meadows produced a small flock of sparrows along the driveway that included several White-crowned and Savannah Sparrows and Purple Finches (as well as a possible Vesper Sparrow that was only briefly glimpsed). Otherwise, there were not as many birds as yesterday; highlights included a female Black-throated Blue Warbler and (another) late Yellow-Billed Cuckoo.

——————–

From Jane Flynn:
There were 4 Eastern Meadowlarks in the tall grass at Birchwood Manor (Jefferson Rd., Whippany) this morning (Sunday) around 11:30am.
