A steady rain midday still made for a nice mix of species in Glenhurst; Redstarts 5, BTBlue 4, Magnolia 2, Common Yellowthroat 8+, Blackpoll, Connecticut (bushwacked), Palm+, Prairie and Yellow-rumped+…
Sparrows included: White-throated, Song, Swamp, Chipping, Lincoln’s, Savannah and Towhee…also an American Woodcock flushed off the path….+/- 15 more species present.
Expecting Nelson’s & Vesper Sparrows soon?!

Weather:
Temperature Range, 56º f to 70º f, Visibility 5 to 7 miles increasing to
10 miles in the afternoon. Cloud cover 5% to 10% with mostly blue sky and
haze beyond 10 miles. Wind, WSW, 3 to 5 mph.

Raptor Observations:
TVs and a few BVs low above the Tourne by 0910. First OS arrived a few
minutes later at 0921 low from Forth Lee and passing under the Tourne. A
lone AK passes in front of the ridge by 0945 at eye level. A second OS
passed over th Tourne between the 1000 and 1100 time slot with the final OS
coming from behind the ridge at about 1435. An Imm. CH perched in the cedar
tree for about 15 seconds then flew at eye level in front of the ridge. No
raptors spotted between 1100 and 1200.

Non-raptor Observations:
I did spot my first Black Bear (after more than 14 years on site) half way
down the tower road as we were leaving the ridge. First flock of migrating
Canada Geese (70) high in the sky heading south at 1145.

Clay-colored Sparrow’s 2nd week at Duke Farms, Oct. 1, 2012

Jeff Ellerbusch reports the continuing Clay-colored Sparrow (CCSP) at Duke Farms this morning. This is probably the same individual from last week. The CCSP frequents the community garden at the western most parking area of the Orientation Center on Duke Parkway West, Hillsborough. Also present: Palm Warblers, Field Sparrow, 25 Savannah Sparrows, Song Sparrows, 2 Lincoln’s Sparrows and 2 Eastern Meadowlarks.

Pine Siskins in Morris and Somerset, Sept. 30, 2012

Pine Siskins were reported yesterday from Union to Ocean to Cape May counties. Today they are in Morris and Somerset.

This past week I’ve had a few purple finches at my feeders in Randolph. Today (Sunday) I have a PINE SISKIN.

3 Pine Siskins just showed up at my feeders here in Raritan Borough (5:05 PM Sunday, 9/30)

Weather:
TEMPERATURE: 60°F , WIND SPEED: calm-2mph, WIND DIRECTION: Variable, CLOUD

Raptor Observations:
Many hawks were low or directly overhead. A few broad-wings were seen in
groups of 9-3-4 all circling higher then the others.

Non-raptor Observations:
Wild Turkey =7, Cedar Waxwings, Ravens =2 and a Magnolia Warbler was
hanging out with the the local chickadees.

Predictions:
Mostly cloudy with a chance of rain, then a chance of a thunderstorm and a
chance of rain in the afternoon. High of 64F. Winds less than 5 mph. Chance
of rain 40%.
