Long Valley yard birds; Troy Meadows Warblers; Early White-crowned Sparrow, Sept. 28, 2012

From Ken Hart:
Hi Jonathan,
I’ve been experimenting this last week and a half with early a.m. birding just outside my house on Black River Road in Long Valley, 1-1/2 miles upstream from the town of Pottersville. I’ve yet to stray more than 10 yards from my house, but have seen a surprising array of migrants, some high in the oaks, many low in the rhododendrons.
Today’s list:
American Redstart
Red-Eyed Vireo
Ruby-Crowned Kinglet
Blackpoll Warbler
Black-Throated Green Warbler
Yellow-Rumped Warbler (this afternoon)
Black-Throated Blue Warbler
Blackburnian Warbler
American Goldfinch
Yellow-Bellied Sapsucker (imm.)
Rose-Breasted Grosbeak (imm. male)
Eastern Wood Pewee
Red-Breasted Nuthatch

Most of the above have been showing up each morning, with daily, consistent Red-Eyed Vireos, Black-Throated Green Warblers, and Ruby-Crowned Kinglets being the most reliable.
Add to these, over this past ten or so days:
Chipping Sparrow (9/27)
Eastern Phoebe (9/18, 27)
Black & White Warbler (9/20, 21)
Common Yellowthroat ((9/19, 20, 21)
Cooper’s Hawk (9/21)
Sharp-Shinned Hawk (9/21)
House Wren (9/20)
Magnolia Warbler (9/19)
Purple Finch (9/18, 19)
Baltimore Oriole (9/9)
a possible Canada Warbler on 9/26,
and two black bears on 9/26, 30 feet away (and sticking around for awhile) which quickly ended the morning’s bird count.

I don’t think of this area being any sort of migrant trap– it’s low between two ridges, very close to the Black River. Yet I’m surprised to have found such good birding in a publicly under-birded spot, without having to even change out of my slippers!

————————-
A late afternoon walk by this writer into Troy Meadows in Parsippany via Troy Meadows Rd. yielded a surprising pocket of warblers:
Common Yellowthroat – 3
Northern Parula – 2
Blackpoll Warbler
Black-throated Blue Warbler
Palm Warbler – 2
Yellow-rumped Warbler – 2
Black-throatd Green Warbler -1
Wilson’s Warbler – adult male.

Also, there was the largest flock of Purple Finches, 20, reported this season in either Morris or Somerset Counties – one male and 19 female types. 4 American Kestrels, 1 male and 3 females were roosting on snags on the marsh.
————————-
————————-
After researching eBird records, it turns out the White-crowned Sparrow found by Jeff Ellerbusch at Duke Farms in Hillsborough Township this morning is the earliest fall date and only September record in eBird for either Somerset or Morris Counties – ever – and only the third record in the entire state this season. Every season and every year is unique in birding. This one is definitely slanted towards early arrivals.

Clay-colored Sparrow continues in the afternoon at Duke Farms, Sept. 28, 2012

From John J. Collins:

The previously reported CLAY-COLORED SPARROW is still present at Duke Farms right now. It is located in the weeds bordering the west fence located in the community garden parking lot (said gardens are west of the visitor’s center f/k/a the horse barn). Dozens of AMERICAN GOLDFINCHES, SAVANNAH SPARROWS, PALM WARBLERS, at least 2 AMERICAN KESTRELS and many other species are present as well.

I also think I am hearing a WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW singing right now.

Clay-colored and other Sparrows at Duke Farms; Ruddys on the move, Sept. 28, 2012

Jeff Ellerbusch reports the Clay-colored Sparrow (CCSP) he found at Duke Farms in Hillsborough Township yesterday continues this morning. The CCSP is at the right corner of the fenced community garden at the western most parking area of the Orientation Center on Duke Parkway West. 3 Lincoln’s Sparrows, Chipping, Song, abundant Savannah Sparrows as well as a juvenile White-crowned Sparrow are in the same area. Also present were a single Bobolink, flyover Purple Finch, Common Yellowthroats, Palm Warblers everywhere and a late Yellow Warbler. At sunrise, a Common Nighthawk flew over the garden.

October is at our doorstep. Jamie Glydon reports 7 Ruddy Ducks at Lake Parsippany this morning. This is the second report of Ruddy Ducks in our area this week. The first of the season were at Mt. Hope Lake Sunday, Sept. 23.

Clay-colored Sparrow continues at Duke Farms, Sept. 27, 2012

The Clay-colored Sparrow (CCSP) at Duke Farms in Hillsborough Township was seen this afternoon at the corner of the garden. This is located to the right (west) of the Orientation Center on Duke Parkway West. Jeff Ellerbusch found the CCSP this morning. He saw it again early in the afternoon. The bird then hid for a few hours before reappearing in close view on a fence railing at 4:20. There are bushels of Savannah Sparrows and Palm Warblers present as well as a Lincoln’s Sparrow.

Connecticut Warbler continues at Glenhurst Meadows, Sept. 27, 2012

From John J. Collins:

My friend Carol and I birded Glenhurst Meadows in Warren this morning. We DID see a CONNECTICUT WARBLER but not at the previously reported location (where we waited for about an hour and a half to no avail). We decided to walk down to the river via the west access from the warbler site. Walking east along the river you come to the first dog leg to the right and it was there we saw the Connecticut Warbler. It did not stick around though.

Other birds seen this morning at Glenhurst were 2 RUBY-CROWNED KINGLETS, 2 SWAINSON’S THRUSHES, 5 COMMON YELLOWTHROATS, 5 AMERICAN REDSTARTS, 3 NORTHERN PARULAS, 3 MAGNOLIA WARBLERS, 3 PALM WARBLERS, 1 BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER, 2 LINCOLN’S SPARROWS, 7 WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS, 1 SCARLET TANAGER, 1 ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK, 2 INDIGO BUNTINGS, and the other usual birds.

Notes : I guess when the official hawk Counter marks the number and

really slow day and probably a South wind… Affirmed.
