Forster’s Tern at Boonton Reservoir; other Morris notes, Sept. 26, 2012

A Forster’s Tern was viewed at Boonton Reservoir for at least 10 minutes this afternoon at 1:15. It was constantly airborne near the island towards the southern half of the reservoir. It may be viewable from the old Bridge walkway next to Rt. 202 or the Waterview Plaza parking lot at 2001 Rt. 46 East if it is still in the area. After initially seen from the north end of the reservoir, it was not relocated from the aforementioned Waterview Plaza. This is the first record of Forster’s Tern on a Morris Count body of water since 1996. A Forster’s Tern from the Great Swamp N.W.R., dated May 6, 2012 is listed in the eBird database.

Elsewhere, an unexpectedly productive morning, considering the southerly-flavored winds, was had at Sayre’s Farm in Morris Township.
Highlights:

1 Northern Waterthrush
6 Common Yellowthroats

Common Gallinule, Morris Lakes report, Sept. 23, 2012

Mt. Hope Lake in Rockaway Township had 9 Blue-winged Teal, 1 Northern Shoveler, 3 Ruddy Ducks, 1 Pied-billed Grebe, 30 Double-crested Cormorants, 4 Great Blue Herons, 2 Great Egrets and 1 American Coot. 41 Mute Swans represents one of the lowest counts at this location since the beginning of the year. The Shoveler, Ruddy Duck and Coot reports are the first records of the Summer/Fall 2012 season in Morris County.

Lake Musconetcong had a Common Gallinule in the northeast corner near Port Morris Park. Other than a May 5 report from the Great Swamp N.W.R. by Simon Lane and Peter Burke, this is the only known record of Common Gallinule in Morris County for 2012. 6 Pied-billed Grebes (they were everywhere today) and 5 fly-by Lesser Yellowlegs were also present.

Budd Lake was purely recreational with water skiers, sailboats and one lone Ring-billed Gull.

Birds were practically absent from Melanie Lane Pond in Hanover Township.

The day began with clear skies with minimal clouds over the coast line. By
1230-1300 hours cloud cover moved in and brought 25-30% coverage which was
a help in seeing migrants high up. Temp range 52-69F with winds 0-5 mph
from the west/northwest.

Raptor Observations:
The morning was sluggish but we were able to pull Accipitors rising out of
the valley and above the horizon. From 1230 onward it was non stop raptor
activity with Broad-winged hawks streaming and kettling high and in front
of the watch, with a few kettles overhead. By 1615 the last kettle of (32)
was observed over Marcella ridge.

Adult Bald Eagles @ 1205, 1300, 1350, 1415 & 1455 with one immature @ 1455
also. American Kestrel came out of the left of the valley and some were
seen as they grabbed dragonflies in flight. Two Osprey observed after 2
separate kettles went through.

Non-raptor Observations:
Female Purple Finch, Black-throated Green and the usual variety of birds.

Predictions:
A mainly sunny sky. High near 65F. Winds WNW at 5 to 10 mph (Weather

Sunday Morning migrants in Morris and Somerset, Sept. 23, 2012

The cold front that came into our region last night held the hope of a bounty of migrants for Sunday morning but the reality was a modest return instead, certainly nothing like last weekend.

Highlights from Sayre’s Farm in Morris Township:
7 Easter Phoebes
4 Red-eyed Vireos
2 Ruby-crowned Kinglets
1 Northern Parula
1 Black-and-white Warbler
2 Nashville Warblers
8 Common Yellowthroats
2 Am. Redstarts
5 Magnolia Warblers
1 Blackpoll Warbler
1 Palm Warbler
20 Song Sparrows
1 Lincoln’s Sparrow
3 Swamp Sparrows
1 Rose-breasted Grosbeak
6 Indigo Buntings
3 Purple Finches

Purple Finches have been regular in Southern Morris County and Northern Somerset County (a.k.a. SoMoCo and NoSoCo respectively) for the past two weeks. Except for scant isolated reports, Purple Finches were previously absent from the region for most of 2012.

Jamie Glydon found 5 Savannah and 1 Lincoln’s Sparrow at Veteran’s Memorial Park in Whippany and 2 White-throated Sparrows at Bee Meadow Park. Later in the afternoon Jamie located a Clay-colored Sparrow in Florham Park. This post was being written when that news came over the SMS. The Clay-colored Sparrow post is here.

The morning migrant activity was busy early at Sayre’s Farm and all but died by 9 a.m. Jeff Ellerbusch reports the opposite at Glenhurst Meadows where the warbler activity did not peak until after 9:00. Here are the highlights from Glenhurst:
1 White-eyed Vireo (not a typical species at Glenhurst)
1 Ovenbird
1 Northern Waterthrush
1 Black-and-white Warbler
1 Nashville Warbler
8 Common Yellowthroats
15 Am. Redstarts
7 Northern Parulas
2 Magnolia Warblers
1 Chestnut-sided Warbler
3 Blackpoll Warblers
2 Black-throated Blue Warblers
2 Palm Warblers (Western)
10 Palm Warblers (Yellow)
1 Yellow-rumped Warbler
1 Prairie Warbler
3 Black-throated Green Warblers
8 Chipping Sparrows
2 Field Sparrows
2 Savannah Sparrows
10 Song Sparrows
5 Lincoln’s Sparrows
4 Swamp Sparrows
3 Indigo Buntings
3 Purple Finches

A Morris Lakes report from today will be forthcoming.

Clay-colored Sparrow continues in Florham, Sept. 23, 2012

The Clay-colored Sparrow (CCSP) discovered this afternoon by Jamie Glydon was present as late as 6:00 p.m. The location is the area known as Florham Park Fields on Columbia Turnpike. The CCSP was near the mound by the pond furthest away from Columbia Turnpike. Look for the rusty tractor and that is the general area the CCSP was working. Also, look for the sparrow that doesn’t fly like the Song and Savannah Sparrows it was accompanying. This is the first known record of CCSP in Morris County since the October 2010 record by Simon Lane in the Great Swamp N.W.R. No other records exist for Morris County in the eBird database.
