Connecticut and Cape May Warblers at Glenhurst Meadows, Sept. 21, 2012

From Mike Hiotis at Glenhurst Meadows, Warren Township:

Hello Jonathan,
I had my second Connecticut Warbler this year at the site on a stroll between 2:30 – 4:30PM. Late afternoon walks have been lucky for me re: this species (the lone Oporornis now). It was off the path leading west from the trailhead between the two ponds on the parking lot side. It popped up to my right to a perch 8ft. off the ground and stretched it’s body while checking me out. The complete eye-ring & brown hood, pale throat and long undertail coverts seen well in a 10 second look. It then flew down out of site and I turned and let it be. As can be the case for me the only other warblers I saw were Common Yellowthroat and a lone Redstart with the Conn. This is now the 8th year in a row for this species and this birder meeting at Glenhurst in the Fall.

Mike Hiotis
—————
And earlier in the day from Mike Newlon:
Glenhurst was slow this morning – one small flock of warblers contained Cape May Warbler, Parula, B&W, BTGr. Red-shouldered Hawk calling from usual location at NE corner. Only sparrows were Swamp and Song.

8 Lincoln’s Sparrows, 13 Warbler Species at Glenhurst Meadows, Sept. 20, 2012

Those who frequent Glenhurst Meadows in Warren Township during October are conditioned to finding multiple and double-digit Lincoln’s Sparrows. Jeff Ellerbusch had 8 this morning. It’s only September, not that it is unheard of to have this many this early. One wonders if drought conditions accelerated the migration schedule for some species in 2012.

Here are some highlights from Jeff’s list at Glenhurst Meadows this morning:

Green-winged Teal – 2
American Kestrel – 3
Eastern Wood-Pewee
Eastern Phoebe – 3
Ruby-crowned Kinglet
Veery
Ovenbird
Northern Waterthrush
Black-and-white Warbler – 4
Common Yellowthroat – 9
American Redstart – 5
Northern Parula – 10
Magnolia Warbler – 3
Blackburnian Warbler
Chestnut-sided Warbler
Blackpoll Warbler – 2
Palm Warbler – 1 Western, 2 Yellow
Yellow-rumped Warbler
Black-throated Green Warbler – 3
Lincoln’s Sparrow – 8
White-throated Sparrow
Scarlet Tanager
Rose-breasted Grosbeak
Indigo Bunting – 3
Bobolink – 2 flyovers
Purple Finch – 4 flyovers

Also, numerous Blue Jays and other typical species of the area.
