Am. Pipits and Am. Golden Plovers in Montgomery Twp., other field notes, Sept. 19, 2012

Jeff Ellerbusch found the fall migration season’s first two American Pipits (AMPI) in Morris and Somerset Counties this morning at Selody Sod Farm in Montgomery Township. According to the eBird database, the only other September 2012 reports of AMPI so far in New Jersey are from Round Valley/Spruce Run Reservoirs and a single record from the Meadowlands. None are listed at all from Morris County in 2012. 3 American Golden Plovers and the usual 100 Killdeer were also at Selody Sod Farm.

At Bee Meadow Park in Whippany this morning, Jamie Glydon had Pied-billed Grebe, Veery, Brown Thrasher, Black-and-white Warbler, Common Yellowthroat, American Redstart, Magnolia, Chestnut-sided and Black-throated Green Warblers, and White-throated Sparrow.

Yellow-bellied Flycatcher and lots of birds at Glenhurst Meadows, Sept. 17, 2012

One clear pattern in today’s migration in Morris and Somerset Counties is the predominance of Magnolia Warblers and to a lesser extent, Northern Parulas. Other species were well represented, of course, but the numbers of Maggies and Parulas made a strong impression. Sayre’s Farm illustrated this in Morris County this morning. Jeff Ellerbusch’s report from Glenhurst Meadows in Somerset County confirms it. As with Sayre’s Farm, the amounts are on the conservative side – it is difficult to get a precise number with so many birds present. Here are the numbers from Glenhurst Meadows:

Yellow-bellied Flycatcher
Eastern Phoebe – 6
Red-eyed Vireo -10
Red-breasted Nuthatch
Northern Waterthrush
Black-and-white Warbler – 8
Nashville Warbler – 4
Common Yellowthroat -16
American Redstart – 15
Northern Parula – 15
Magnolia Warbler – 25
Bay-breasted Warbler
Blackburnian Warbler
Chestnut-sided Warbler – 3
Blackpoll Warbler – 5
Black-throated Blue Warbler
Palm Warbler – 12
Pine Warbler
Black-throated Green Warbler – 12
Canada Warbler
Wilson’s Warbler
Savanah Sparrow
Lincoln’s Sparrow – 3
Rose-breasted Grosbeak
Indigo Bunting – 3
Purple Finch -3 flyovers.

Warblers and a Raven in Roxbury, Sept. 17, 2012

From Alan Boyd:

Hi Jonathan,
Early this morning I had a flock of warblers right off my deck in Roxbury that included 3 Blackburnians, 5 Magnolias, 4 Black-throated Greens, 2 Parulas, 1 Black-and-white, and 1 Redstart.

Near the ATT tower at the end of Patricia Drive there was a small flock that included many of the same species plus a Yellow-rump and a Bay-breasted.

One of the local Ravens was vocalizing from the tower.

Lots of birds, including Connecticut Warbler in Morris Twp., Sept. 17, 2012

Simply put, this morning’s influx of migrant birds was outstanding in the Morris and Somerset County area. Sayre’s Farm had more individuals than this observer has seen there in over one year of birding the location. As this post is being composed, Jeff Ellerbusch reports that Glenhurst is “spectacular” as well.

Panoramic vision would have helped this morning. It was hard to choose where to focus because there were so many birds. With more eyes, I am sure the species list would be much larger. All numbers are conservative. Most birds were rapidly working through the trees and were not accounted for. The highlight was a Connecticut Warbler (apparent 1st year male) which conveniently posed for a good 30 seconds before disappearing. The number of Magnolia Warblers and Northern Parulas was impressive. Although the list only says 20 and 15 respectively, those are individuals that were actually counted and not the dozens of others that moved on. There was the 1st known report of Yellow-rumped Warbler in Morris County for the season. 2 Lincoln’s Sparrows and 3 Purple Finches round out the morning’s haul.

Eastern Wood-Pewee – 2
Eastern Phoebe – 4
Yellow-throated Vireo – 1 Singing
Blue-headed Vireo
Red-eyed Vireo – 15
Tennessee Warbler – 2
Nashville Warbler – 2
Connecticut Warbler
Common Yellowthroat – 15
American Redstart – 10
Northern Parula – 15
Magnolia Warbler – 20
Chestnut-sided Warbler
Palm Warbler – 10
Yellow-rumped Warbler – 1
Black-throated Green Warbler – 8
Canada Warbler – 1
Lincoln’s Sparrow – 2
Indigo Bunting – 4
Purple Finch – 3 (1 male, 2 females).
