Philadelphia Vireo, etc., in Morris Township, Sept. 16, 2012

A wonderful push of migrants descended on Washington Valley in Morris Township this morning. The highlight was the second Philadelphia Vireo in the past week found at Sayre’s Farm – this time by Jamie Glydon. A Lincoln’s Sparrow was found for the 4th day in a row in the county, either at Bee Meadow Park in Whippany or Sayre’s Farm. A Swainson’s Thrush appeared briefly by the nursery. The following list is mostly from Sayre’s Farm but also includes totals from Patriot’s Path on Washington Valley Road creating a snapshot of activity in Morris Township’s Washington Valley for the morning of September 16, 2012.

Lincoln’s Sparrows in Morris Twp.; Shorebirds in Somerset Co., other field notes, Sept 15, 2012

Morris Township was pleasantly birdy this morning. Two Lincoln’s Sparrows and two Purple Finches were at Sayre’s Farm. Two Lincoln’s Sparrows were also found by Jamie Glydon at Bee Meadow Park yesterday, Sept. 14.
Sayre’s Farm highlights:

Eastern Wood-Pewee – 6
Eastern Phoebe singing incessantly
Red-eyed Vireo – 5
Common Yellowthroat – 5
Am. Redstart – 8
No. Parula – 2
Magnolia Warbler
Chestnut-sided Warbler
Lincoln’s Sparrow – 2
Scarlet Tanager
Rose-breasted Grosbeak – 2
Purple Finch – 2

Patriot’s Path along Washington Valley Road added 3 Palm Warblers.

5 Blue-winged Teal were at Mt. Hope Lake in Rockaway Township. Mute Swan numbers are down to a low 63.

Jeff Ellerbusch had the following at Selody Sod Farms: 3 Buff-breasted Sandpipers (2 juves, 1 un-aged), 3 Am. Golen Plovers (2 Adults, 1 Juve) and 178 Killdeer. The construction site at Schoolhouse Rd. in Franklin Township had 7 Least Sandpipers, 5 Killdeer and 4 Blue-winged Teal.

Chimney Rock was reported as “dead” this morning. Hawk movements will probably pick up during the day with the northwest winds.

On Twitter, Rick S., @PixelHawk, tweets 200 Broad-winged Hawks as of noon at Wildcat Ridge in Rockaway Township.

With constant northerly winds overnight, Sunday morning could be quite good.

Connecticut Warbler at Glenhurst Meadows, Sept. 13, 2012

From Mike Hiotis:

Hey Jonathan,
I was fortunate to get a good look at a Connecticut Warbler along the brook trail between 3:30 – 5:00 PM today. I try to stay in the shade walking here late afternoon due to the sun in the western sky. It was a brown hooded bird and like always one cannot emphasize enough how long the undertail coverts are. Other species present were a 2 Purple Finch flyover and a handfull of Common Yellowthroats, Titmouse, Chickadee & WB Nutball…

Connecticut Warbler, Lincoln’s Sparrow at Bee Meadow Park, Sept. 13, 2012

Jamie Glydon found Morris County’s 1st Connecticut Warbler of 2012 this morning at Bee Meadow Park in Whippany. In addition, if that was not enough, he turned up the first Lincoln’s Sparrow documented on eBird for Morris County in 2012. It is surprising that none were reported in the Spring.

Birders should keep in mind that eBird is THE main source of bird records and they should enter their sightings whether extraordinary or commonplace. This writer and an entire upcoming generation of researchers does not have the time to rummage through emails and old periodicals in search of bird records. Simply, going forward, if it is not on eBird, it does not exist.
