More Philadelphia Vireos at Chimney Rock, Sept. 11, 2012

From John J. Collins:
I went to Chimney Rock (Bridgewater, Somerset County) today and saw a PHILADELPHIA VIREO at the east end of the parking lot at noon time. In addition to that nice bird there were Red-eyed Vireo (which at one point sat right near the Philadelphia so I could make a comparison of the two species – very cooperative of them), Black-and-White Warblers, Magnolia Warbler, American Redstarts, Chestnut-sided Warbler, Common Yellowthroats, Northern Parula, Ruby-throated Hummingbirds, and, at the Hawk Watch, Ospreys, Bald Eagles (I saw at least 4), hundreds of Broad-winged Hawks, Merlins, American Kestrels, and Common Ravens.

————————
And from Jeff Ellerbusch’s eBird comments:
“(A Philadelphia Vireo) Feeding on and around ‘suet’ tree, at Hawk Watch platform, seen by all. A second individual was seen by Chris (Aquila) seconds before, on the same tree, but flew off. These represent the 4th and 5th Philadelphia Vireos (if none are repeats) at Chimney Rock this season…WOW”

Philadelphia Vireo, Yellow-bellied Flycatcher, Baird’s Sandpiper in Somerset Co., Sept. 10, 2012

Here are some of the highlights from Jeff Ellerbusch’s report from Chimney Rock this morning:

  • Black-billed Cuckoo
  • Yellow-bellied FlycatcherVery yellow individual- seen very well, by multiple observers, for 5 or so minutes.
  • Philadelphia VireoSeen very well, at point blank range, for roughly 3 min. This is remarkably the 3rd morning this season that a PHVI has been present at Chimney Rock- 9/6, 9/9, and 9/10. Whether this is the same bird as yesterday morning I don’t know…yesterday’s bird was a much briefer look, at a different angle, and the lighting was completely different.
  • Red-breasted Nuthatch
  • Swainson’s Thrush
  • Blue-winged Warbler
  • Black-and White Warbler – 4
  • Common Yellowthroat
  • Am. Redstart – 5
  • No. Parula
  • Magnolia Warbler
  • Chestnut-sided Warbler – 3
  • Black-throated Blue Warbler
  • Black-throated Green Warbler
  • Scarlet Tanager
  • Rose-breasted Grosbeak – 2
  • Purple Finch – 3

Mark Harris eBirded a Baird’s Sandpiper from Selody Sod Farm in Montgomery Township. 6 American Golden Plovers, 2 Buff-breasted Sandpipers and 56 Killdeer were also reported. The Baird’s was not found later in the day.

Red-breasted Nuthatches in Convent Station, Sept. 9, 2012

From Dan Albohn:

Jonathan,
There was considerable activity here in Convent Station (in Morris Township – ed.) as we worked on the property. The Red-Breasted Nuthatches have stayed around and they were talking and eating all day high in the conifers along with their white-breasted relatives, Chickadees, and Titmice. The Carolina Wren made his presence known, I spotted a Goldfinch, and a female Ruby-Throated Hummingbird frequented the feeder we set up last week.

The woodpeckers were also active, as a male Hairy has been here the past couple days, and yesterday he was accompanied by what looked to be a younger male. A Flicker stopped by and of course, the Red-Bellied and multiple Downies.
