Yellow-bellied Flycatcher, Tennessee Warbler, etc., September 1, 2012

September brought a modest wave of migrants into Morris Township today. At the Patriot’s Path area of Washington Valley Road, a juvenile Yellow-bellied Flycatcher appeared in the southwest corner of the field before moving on. Also present were Black-and-white Warbler, Common Yellowthroat, American Redstart, Northern Parula, Magnolia, Chestnut-sided and Black-throated Green Warblers and a Baltimore Oriole.

At Sayre’s Farm, Jamie Glydon and I had great looks at a Tennessee Warbler. Later, a probable second individual was located in a different section of the property. Also at the farm were 6 Ruby-throated Hummingbirds, Chimney Swifts, 3 E. Wood-Pewees, 2 Alder-Willow (Traill’s) Flycatchers, Red-eyed Vireos, Blue-gray Gnatcatchers, Common Yellowthroats and a Rose-breasted Grosbeak.

The Chimney Rock Hawkwatch season commences today in Martinsville. As with last year, daily results will appear on this web site. Early morning migrants reported by Simon Lane were Alder/Willow (Traill’s) Flycatcher, Least Flycatcher, a continuing White-eyed Vireo, Warbling and Red-eyed Vireos, Blue-winged, Black-and-white Warblers, Common Yellowthroat, 7 American Redstarts, Magnolia, Bay-breasted, 3 Chestnut-sided, Black-throated Green and Canada Warblers, Scarlet Tanager and Indigo Bunting.

Leftover migrants; Mourning Warbler in Bernardsville, August 30, 2012

Not the numbers of migrants as yesterday but a few individuals were following the north wind this morning. Split Rock Reservoir had Blackburnian, Chestnut-sided, Black-throated Green and Nashville Warblers, American Redstarts, Red-eyed Vireos and Blue-gray Gnatcatchers. A Magnolia Warbler was at Beaver Pond down the road at Wildcat Ridge. The evening before saw numerous Eastern Wood-Pewees on the snags around Beaver Pond. Today there was one.

Jamie Glydon managed a few species at Bee Meadow Park in Whippany: Veery, 6 Black-and-white Warblers, 8 Common Yellowthroats, 10 American Redstarts and a Northern Parula.

Joe Pescatore had the yardbird of the day in Bernardsville: a Mourning Warbler 10 feet away from his home office window. Also present were Black-throated Green and Black-and-white Warblers.
