Tundra Swan at Great Swamp; Bald Eagle in Washington Township, Feb. 20, 2012

Simon Lane reports having three swan species this morning at the Friends Blind at the Wildlife Observation Center of the Great Swamp N.W.R. on Long Hill Road, Harding Township. Of course, only two of the species are genuinely wild, the 2 Mute Swans and the Tundra Swan that were seen. The continuing Trumpeter Swan which was also viewed has been present for almost an entire year and is an escapee of the captive Trumpeter Swan brood in Bernardsville. It is not countable.

From Alan Boyd:

Hi Jonathan,

An adult Bald Eagle was over the Musconetcong River where it separates Hackettstown and Washington Twp. (Morris Co). It was near the hatchery ponds on Rt 57. There was an immature bird over that same area on Friday the 17th.

Bird notes from Sunday: Raven, Redheads, Cackling Geese, Feb. 19, 2012

Washington Valley in Morris Township was alive with birds and song this morning between Patriot’s Path on Washington Valley Road and Sayre’s Farm on Mendham Road. Plenty of Dark-eyed Juncos, White-throated and American Tree Sparrows, American Goldfinches, female Red-winged Blackbirds, Eastern Bluebirds, singing Carolina Wrens and numerous singing Song Sparrows were evident. A Common Raven was loudly calling near Washington Valley Road. Cedar Waxwings, Eastern Towhee, Fox, Field and Swamp Sparrows as well as Northern Flickers, singing Tufted Titmice, American Robins, etc. etc. round out the list. February 19? It sounded and looked like March.

Elsewhere:
Jamie Glydon reports that the Redhead group at Clark Drive in Mt. Olive has decreased to 6 (from yesterday’s 14) as of this morning.

Jeff Ellerbusch, Cackling Goose spotter extraordinaire, found at least 20 more Cackling Geese today in a group of 3,000 Canada Geese at the Selody Sod Farm, viewed from Skillman Rd., Montgomery Township.

NJBRC report adds Varied Thrush to the List of the Birds of Morris County

The New Jersey Bird Record Committee’s (NJBRC) Report dated 2011 is published. It covers records of review species for the calendar year of 2010. Morris County has two records added to its list: Varied Thrush, a county first; and the second county record for Painted Bunting. The List of the Birds of Morris County on mocosocobirds.com includes these additions as of February, 17, 2012.

The Varied Thrush was a backyard bird in Mt. Olive from November 23 to December 14, 2010.

The Painted Bunting was photographed at a feeder in Montville on December 4, 2010. Interestingly, both accepted Morris County records of Painted Bunting are from Montville.

Somerset County’s list is unaffected by the NJBRC report.

Grackles, Geese, Redheads and a Northern Shrike, Feb. 16, 2012

Huge swarms of thousands of Common Grackles (COGR) in the airspace over Hillsborough Township are a common morning sight during the past week. Heading west, what is assumed to be the same birds are favoring the area of the South Branch in the Neshanic Station area. Jeff Ellerbusch encountered: “A very, very conservative 15,000 COGR at Studdiford, consisting of 3 flocks…only 1 flock is hanging around.” Also in this same area were 3,000 Canada Geese, 3 Cackling Geese and 1 Snow Goose (Blue Goose – photo below) as well as a Northern Harrier, 2 Killdeer and 2 Northern Pintail.

This is after Jeff had 12,000 Common Grackles, 1,500 Red-winged Blackbirds and 600 Brown-headed Cowbirds at the farm on River Rd. between Norz Dr. and South Branch Road. People were stopping on the side of the road to watch.

In Morris County: Mike Wolfe had the 14 Redheads today at Clark Dr., in Mt. Olive Township. (Photo by Mike Wolfe.)

The Northern Shrike continues in Boonton Township seen by Jim Mulvey yesterday and this writer today at 4:45 p.m. in the rain. (Photo by Jonathan Klizas.)

175 Common Mergansers were on Lake Valhalla in Montville Township along with 5 Ruddy Ducks and a few Bufflehead.

Ducks on the move in Morris County, Feb. 14, 2012

The 7 Common Goldeneye (3 drakes; 4 hens) found by Steve Fasciana earlier in the afternoon at Lake Musconetcong were still view-able at 4 p.m., this time looking Northeast from the end of Water Street in Netcong. These are the first Common Goldeneyes reported in Morris County in 2012.

American Wigeon have been reappearing. 25 were at Mt. Hope Lake on Sunday. A few showed up at Lake Parsippany today. Also today at Lake Parsippany were 41 Lesser Scaup and a high count for the year of 102 Gadwall. The previous high was 74 on Feb. 8 so nearly 30 more have come into the lake in the last few days. Common and Hooded Merganser numbers have been steady – the same with Ring-necked Ducks (46 in Chatham; 43 at Pleasant Plains Rd., Great Swamp). Northern Pintail have been seen here and there. Interestingly, a species that is usually a mainstay of open water in the winter in Morris County but is strangely absent from many places this winter: does anyone know where the Ruddy Ducks are?
