Greater White-fronted Goose III in Somerset County, Feb. 13, 2012

An apparent third different Greater White-fronted Goose (GWFG) in Somerset County was found by Jeff Ellerbusch this afternoon at Amwell Pond at the intersection of Amwell and Auten Roads in Hillsborough. What separates this individual from the other two GWFG that have frequented Somerset County this winter is that there is hardly any white border on the sides of its face, but a normal white border towards the front. In general, it is differently marked than the other two Somerset County GWFG.

Mt. Hope Lake and other Morris County notes, Feb. 12, 2012

Mt. Hope Lake in Rockaway Township has had some ducks return to its waters as well as had an increase in the number of Mute Swans that inhabit it. The following event witnessed at the lake this afternoon is one of those moments in nature that one does not soon forget. An adult Bald Eagle cruised into view over the lake; a Peregrine Falcon also appeared and started dive-bombing the Eagle. This went on for a brief time with the Eagle not seeming to be bothered at all. Suddenly all of the ducks became aloft. The Bald Eagle AND the Peregrine Falcon began chasing a drake American Wigeon. This was a stunning and unforgettable sight to see. All three birds raced a quarter of the way around and then across the lake, the Wigeon with the Eagle and Falcon within reach of its tail feathers. At one point, the Peregrine inexplicably disappeared, and was not seen again. The chase continued between the Wigeon and the Eagle. Both birds were head to head and it was thought for sure that the Eagle would reach out and grasp its prey, but that never happened. The chase went out of view behind some trees and Phragmites. A short time later the Eagle flew over the lake and perched in a tree without anything in its talons so, amazingly, the Wigeon must have escaped. This did not seem to calm the other Wigeons as they continued to fly nervously around the lake for some time to come.

The totals:
Mute Swan – 83
Gadwall – 10
Am. Wigeon – 25
Mallards, Canada Geese
Bald Eagles – 2
Peregrine Falcon – 1

Budd Lake was windy and bitingly cold today, Sunday. Most of the gulls were too distant for accurate identification. The Common Merganser numbers dropped from a few days ago with approximately 45 present today.

9 Redheads (4 drakes; 5 hens) remain at the Clark Drive ponds off International Drive in Mt. Olive Township.

10 of the 21 Rusty Blackbirds found yesterday at Tiger Lily Lane in Harding Township were present this morning.

Jamie Glydon reports +/-20 Northern Pintails at the Columbia Turnpike fields in Florham Park.

Out of range for this web site but there wasn’t a Snow Goose, not to mention a Ross’s Goose, to be found anywhere in the area of Merrill Creek Reservoir or Broadway in Warren County this afternoon.

More Redheads in Mt. Olive Township, Feb. 11, 2012

From Alan Boyd:

Hi Jonathan,

This afternoon there were 9 redheads on the pond at 350 Clark Drive in the International Trade Center. There were 4 males and 5 females. No other ducks on the pond, just a few Canadas.

Note: The Clark Drive Redheads were found on January 15. The numbers have gently fluctuated since that time from occasionally none to 4, 5 and 6 individuals. 9 is the high for the year in both Morris and Somerset Counties (and the all-time high count for either county in the eBird database. There were 75 recorded on the Boonton CBC in 1956 and  there are a few other years with more modest double figure numbers (whether these were recorded in Morris or Essex counties is another matter). Surely, there are other historic numbers in the MoCoSoCo region but it requires people to enter their records, hint-hint). (J. Klizas)

Greater White-fronted Goose near Neshanic Station, Feb. 10, 2012

From Mike Newlon:

Greater white-fronted goose near Neshanic Station.
Mid-day 2/10, in a large flock of Canada Geese, at the intersection of routes 567/629. Too far for photos. Possibly the bird from Duke Island Park?

Thousands of Canadas on the Raritan between Duke Island Park and the Old York Rd. bridge, but I could find nothing special among them.

Thousands of Common Grackles in Hillsborough, Feb. 9, 2012

The dearth of Icterids in the northern counties of New Jersey has been a subject of interest amongst local birders throughout the mild winter of 2011-12. Common Grackles and Red-winged Blackbirds were practically absent from some northern Christmas counts. In the previous week, there are increasing reports of Common Grackles from the Great Swamp and other locales in the MoCoSoCo region in numbers of 25, 50, 100, 200.

Today the dam burst. Two impressive flocks of Grackles were seen on Beekman Lane in Hillsborough at sunrise. One cloud of black was over the farm fields north of New Center Road and the other was at the southern end of Beekman at its intersection with Amwell Road possible emanating from an overnight roost in the Cedars of the Belle Mead Depot. There were thousands of birds in each group.

Later in the afternoon at Opie Road in Neshanic Station, Jeff Ellerbusch reported finding what was undoubtedly the same group. He estimated 10-12,000 Grackles and another 500 Red-winged Blackbirds.

Greater White-fronted Goose returns to Schoolhouse Rd., Franklin Township, Feb. 8, 2012

The Greater White-fronted Goose (GWFG) of Bridgewater, particularly Duke Island Park, has been consistently viewed in the area from November 27 through at least February 1. While this is the individual most birders have sought and seen, a different GWFG made occasional visits to Schoolhouse Road in Franklin Township (Sandhill Crane area) during December. This bird was distinguished from the Bridgewater GWFG by field marks and location timing (as in one GWFG cannot be in two places at the same time). The goose has been absent since January 1. That is, until today when Jeff Ellerbusch found what appears to be the same GWFG as seen in December. This conclusion is based on an examination of photographs of both today’s and the December bird.

GWFG at Schoolhouse Rd. (Photos taken with Jeff Ellerbusch’s smart phone)
December is on top; February is on the bottom:

The number of geese in the Hillsborough and Branchburg Township areas is quite impressive at this time. Cackling Geese are spread singly or in small groups throughout the Opie Road-Studdiford Bridge area.
