Wilson’s Warbler on Great Swamp CBC, 12-17-2011

From Tom Halliwell:

Hi Jon,

On the Great Swamp-Watchung Ridges count today (Saturday) Sean Sime and Andy Lamy found a Wilson’s Warbler at the Chatham Sewage Treatment ponds. Coming from Chatham you pull into the parking lot for the tennis center on Passaic Avenue just after crossing Route 24. Drive all the way in and park. The ponds will be in front of you on the other side of a fence. You’ll see a long “wall” of bamboo on the left in which the bird spent much of the time. It tended to work the opposite side of the bamboo because that is where the sun is in the early morning. That means the sun is coming directly at you making observation doubly difficult. You can’t go around to the opposite side because of the barbed-wire fence. Most looks were very brief.

All the best,
Tom Halliwell

Ross’s Goose not seen; Greater White-fronted Goose in Franklin Township, Cackling Goose in Bridgewater, 12-6-2011

The Ross’s Goose was not seen today at Duke Island Park in Bridgewater Township. Other than 7 Canada Geese by the pond next to the parking lot there wasn’t a goose in the park at 9:45a.m. and again at 3 p.m. Where do they go? Well, some may have journeyed up the road to North Branch Park on Milltown Rd. in Bridgetwater. 800 Canada Geese were there with one obvious Cackling Goose as well as 180+ Ring-billed Gulls.

Schoolhouse Road in Franklin Township had at least 2000 Canada Geese at 4:00 p.m. Among them was the Greater White-fronted Goose originally found by Jeff Ellerbusch on December 1 and seen almost daily since then. This is a different individual than the one that was at Duke Island Park until recently. As Jeff states in a comment to yesterday’s Ross’s Goose posting: “The GWFG that has been hanging out at Schoolhouse Rd since Dec 1st is differently marked than the Duke Island Park bird. These two areas are not far at all as the goose flies, but there is no evidence yet that the Duke Island bird uses this field…not sure where that bird goes when not at Duke Island.”
