Cackling Goose at Finderne Wetlands, 12-28-2011

From Jeff Ellerbusch:

There was a Cackling Goose on the western most section of the property this afternoon, easily viewed from the Torpey Athletic Complex. The entire group picked up off the field and put down into the river shortly after I arrived. Wind was absolutely ridiculous, could hardly keep the scope still…the feeding shot below is the only not completely blurred photo.

Also of note was an incredibly small Canada, which has been seen a few times previous. On that note, keep in mind that with the surprising number of Cackling Geese lately, there have also been quite a few very small Canadas. A handfull of these have been startlingly small…and fewer still have not only been startlingly small, but far more importantly, proportionally “odd”.

Would be interesting if some of these were hybrids…

Goshawks and Redheads, Boonton CBC, 12-26-2011

The 76th Boonton Christmas Bird Count was conducted today with sunny skies, breezy winds and completely open water. With some parties not yet reporting the preliminary total count is 85 species. At this time highlights are two separate sightings of immature Northern Goshawks, one in Troy Meadows, the other in Florham Park, and Redheads in Denville. A complete wrap-up will be posted as soon as the totals are tallied. A history of the count is also planned for the near future.

The List of the Birds of Somerset County is Published

One month ago The List of the Birds of Morris County was published on the mocosocoBirds.com web site. It’s companion, The List of the Birds of Somerset County, is posted today. As the Preface for each list states, these are dynamically evolving works and will be added to and enhanced as more records and information become known. A primary supporting argument for doing these on the Internet is that they are infinitely update-able.

Here are the links:
Birds of Somerset County – is the link for the Preface, which gives a brief background.

Here is the List of the Birds of Somerset County.

In the near future, a Year In Review article with highlights of the 2011 birding year in each county will be posted.

Good birding.

Joe Pescatore found an immature Snow Goose today amongst the many Canada Geese today at Ravine Lake in Far Hills, Somerset County. Snow Goose at Lake Parsippany, 12-22-2011

Jamie Glydon reports a Snow Goose at Lake Parsippany, Thursday morning. After the 9,000+ that flew over the Great Swamp during the Christmas Bird Count on Saturday, December 17 this may not seem like much but it represents only the fourth separate date record for Snow Goose in Morris County in 2011.

The Greater White-fronted Goose of Duke Island Park was seen landing in the Raritan River along with hundreds of Canada Geese. It was viewed from River Road making it a Hillsborough twitch.

Red-breasted Merganser on Mt. Hope Lake, 12-20-2011

A Red-breasted Merganser was on Mt. Hope Lake this afternoon. This is only the second one reported in Morris County since the spring. The other was the December 3rd sighting by Tom Halliwell on Budd Lake. Yesterday’s Blue-winged Teal were not visible. The Teal are also an interesting sighting as these are the only Blue-winged Teal reported on eBird this December in New Jersey outside of Cape May. The 75 American Coot seen on Sunday were not present today, or at least not seen. There is a slight corner to this lake not visible without trespassing on private property and it’s possible some waterfowl were hiding there. The Ruddy Duck numbers are below 30 after a high of 160 in November. 30 Mute Swans are at the lake. There were 135 here in July.
