Greater White-fronted Geese in Bridgewater, Jan. 3, 2012

Mike Hiotis reports that he had the continuing Greater White-fronted Goose (GWFG) at Duke Island Park today and also another GWFG at North Branch Park in Bridgewater. The latter location is a first for GWFG as far as is known. Yesterday’s record-setting Cackling Goose flock at Duke Island Park was not found.

33 Cackling Geese and a Greater White-Fronted Goose at Duke Island Park, Jan. 2, 2012

Since October, 2011 there have been numerous sighting of Cackling Geese in Somerset County with the concentration focused on North Branch Park and Duke Island Park, both in Bridgewater Township. These sightings have often been of multiple individuals in twos and threes with the following high counts:

  • 7 on Opie Road, Neshanic on Oct. 12.
  • 8 at Duke Island Park on Nov. 18.
  • 9 at North Branch Park on Nov. 18.

The eBird database lists the 14 Cackling Geese at Assiscong Marsh in Hunterdon County in November, 2009 as New Jersey’s all-time high count. That number will soon be 33. That is the number that Jeff Ellerbusch found and that I also saw with him this afternoon at Duke Island Park, Bridgewater Township. The Cackling Geese (and 300+ Canada Geese) were on the grassy area between the pond and the Raritan River. At one point the Cacklings flew en masse into the pond cackling away. They proceeded to return to the grassy area in assumed family groups of 5 to 10+ individuals. These are all classic Richardson’s Cackling Geese. The number could possibly be 35 but two of the geese with the Cackling group were considered aberrant and dismissed as possible hybrids.

Jeff’s smart phone photos are below. Click on the photos to see full-sized images.

The continuing Greater White-fronted Goose was present as well. The pattern of this bird, and many of the accompanying Canadas, appears to be to roost nightly in the ponds and reservoir of Duke Farms and then return to Duke Island Park and surrounding areas to feed during the day.

Jeff Ellerbusch also found a gorgeous adult blue Snow Goose at North Branch Park.

The young Snow Goose continues on the Somerset side of Osborne Pond in Bernards Township.

5 Sandhill Cranes were on Randolph Rd. this afternoon at 3:30 p.m. slightly south of the Apgar Rd. intersection in the corn stubble on the west side of the road.

Wilson’s Warbler in Chatham; Greater White-fronted Goose at Duke Island Park, Jan. 1, 2012

Chatham’s Wilson’s Warbler was seen well this morning on Sunday, January 1st. It was in a tree at the near end of the bamboo wall while driving into a parking spot at the Centercourt Tennis Club on Passaic Avenue – a car bird! Later it would flit from branch to fence to bush keeping in view for some two to three minutes.

2-3 Northern Shovelers are also at the Chatham Sewage Ponds along with Ring-necked Ducks, Buffleheads, Hooded Mergansers and Gadwall.

Teri Catalano reports the Greater White-Fronted Goose from Duke Island Park in Bridgewater this afternoon. 2012 is starting where 2011 left off.

2011 – A Birding Year in Review for Morris and Somerset Counties

Mocosocobirds presents a 2011 Year in Review for Morris and Somerset counties. Included are high counts, arrival dates and other records of interest. Records are compiled from the eBird database, mocosocobirds reports, personal correspondences and JerseyBirds postings. These reviews can be updated as needed since they are Internet publications. If the reader knows of additional records or corrections they are urged to notify mocosocobirds through the Bird Reporter.

Residents of Morris and Somerset Counties will remember the weather of 2011 as one of extremes and calamities most have never experienced – from the cold and record snows of winter, through the record rain, record heat and tropical disturbances of the summer to the unlikely and unforgettable late October Nor’easter that paralyzed many parts of both counties. Nonetheless, birders managed to record 225 species in Morris County and 229 in Somerset County as of this date.

The links for the 2011 reports are:

Good birding,

Wilson’s Warbler continues in Chatham, 12-31-2011

The Wilson’s Warbler found during the Great Swamp CBC on December 17 continues at the  Chatham Sewer Ponds. Simon Lane refound it this afternoon. Andy Lamy and Terry Caruthers relocated it on the 30th. The bird favors a stand , actually a wall, of bamboo behind the privately-owned Centercourt Tennis Club on Passaic Ave. Be respectful and courteous if you go.

Sandhill Cranes in Franklin Township, 12-29-2011

From John J. Collins:

The 5 Sandhill Cranes are present right now (10:59 AM) in a corn stubble field off Randolph Rd. in Franklin Township (opposite 100). This is great for me as it means they will be Count Week birds at the least for the Somerset CBC. No sign of the Snow Goose.
