Blue Grosbeak at Willowwood Arboretum, Chester Township, 11-26-2011

From Tom Halliwell:

Hi Jon,

Late this morning (Saturday) I was surprised by a Blue Grosbeak (in female/1st-year plumage) at Willowwood Arboretum. The bird was located along a wide mowed lane at a field/forest edge. The lane is on the right side of the entry road, about one or two tenths of a mile after you have crossed the cattle guard. It is where the forest on the right gives way to the huge field. Of course, you have to park in the lot at the end of the entry road. I saw the grosbeak about two-thirds of the way down the lane (which ends at the boundary fence at Bamboo Brook preserve) when it flushed from the field on the left of the lane to a branch that extended out over the lane. After sitting nicely for a minute or so it flew into the relatively open woods and I could not find it again.

There were lots of birds at Willowwood/Bamboo Brook today including Fox Sparrows (2), Hermit Thrushes (2), Sapsucker (1), Field Sparrows (many), Towhee (1), Bluebirds (very many), Robins (abundant), Yellow-rumps (very many). At one point a kettle formed that included 11 Red-tails and 2 Red-shoulders among several Black & Turkey Vultures.

All the best,
Tom Halliwell

Osprey at Lake Musconetcong; Waterfowl at Morris Lakes, 11-25-2011

From Alan Boyd:

Hi Jon,

The osprey that has been lingering at Lake Musconetcong was present this afternoon near the baseball field on Washington St on the Port Morris side.

Last night we had a gray-phase screech owl in our yard in Roxbury.

From Jonathan Klizas:

2 Redhead drakes continue at Mt. Hope Lake in Rockaway Township. 160 Ruddy Ducks, Pied-billed Grebe, 1 Lesser Scaup and 20 Mute Swans were on the lake. The 30 or so Am. Coot that had been present in previous weeks either moved on or were out of sight.

A 2011 Morris County high count of 300 Ruddy Ducks were at Split Rock Reservoir along with 5 Buffleheads.

Announcing the publication of the List of the Birds of Morris County, NJ, 11-24-2011

Today, Nov. 24, 2011, is the 124th anniversary of the publication of the third and final installment of E. Carleton Thurber’s List of Birds of Morris County, New Jersey which was published by the Morristown weekly the True Democratic Banner in 1887. Thurber’s List was reviewed and referenced in many publications for years afterwards. In honor of this anniversary and in the spirit of creating an historical bridge with the regional bird life of the past the Morris and Somerset County Birding web site, http://www.mocosocobirds.com, is pleased to announce that a new List of the Birds of Morris County is published today on its web site.

Birds of Morris County is the link for the Preface, which gives a brief historical background.
Here are the links for the Lists:

Thurber’s 1887 List

As the Preface states, this is a dynamically evolving work. As information becomes available, the list will be updated and expanded.

Good birding,

Red-headed Woodpecker at North Branch Park and the Somerset Cackling Report, 11-21-11

Here are photos by Jeff of the RHWO and one of the Cackling Geese at North Branch Park:

Glenhurst Meadows 11-20-11 – I heard both Pileated Woodpecker and Red-Shouldered Hawk (both seen by others), and some migrating flocks of Bluebirds and others, but sparrows were rather sparse at Glenhurst this morning.

17 Cackling Geese in Bridgewater Township, 11-18-2011

Bridgewater Township in Somerset County and especially two county parks in the vicinity of the Raritan River can rightly be labeled as the current Cackling Capital of New Jersey. Friday, Jeff Ellerbusch tallied a total of 17 Branta hutcinsii in North Branch Park (9) and Duke Island Park (8). Cackling Geese of up to 4 individuals have been frequenting these areas for the past month but Friday’s totals smash any local records we are aware of.

Pictures taken by Jeff at North Branch Park digiscoped with a smartphone camera.
