Cackling Goose at North Branch Park, Bridgewater, NJ, 10-24-2011

A Cackling Goose was with 700 Canada Geese this afternoon behind the stables at North Branch Park, Milltown Rd., Bridgewater, NJ. Cacklings had been reported from nearby Duke Island Park over the weekend but were not found this afternoon despite this birder searching though 685 Canada Geese.

Cape May Warbler in Morris Township, 10-22-2011

A first fall female Cape May Warbler was present today at Sayre’s Farm in Morris Township (40.793495, -74.53677). This location has been renamed for historical reasons. My references to this place in eBird have also been updated. According to eBird this is the only Cape May Warbler reported in Morris County this year. An immature Yellow-bellied Sapsucker was also present. Numerous Palm and Yellow-rumped Warblers and Ruby-crowned Kinglets continue in the area as well as Eastern Phoebes and Common Yellowthroats.

Nelson’s Sparrow (again) at Finderne Wetlands, Bridgewater Township, 10-22-2011

Jeff Ellerbusch, Simon Lane, Peter Burke and myself partook in what can be described as an Ellerbusch-whack this morning at Finderne Wetlands in search of Emberizine treasures. Peter located a Nelson’s Sparrow which showed nicely. This same species was found in the same identical location on October 10 by Jeff and seen also by Simon on that date. Other species included White-crowned and Chipping Sparrow, the usual numerous Savannah, Swamp and Song Sparrows, Wilson’s Snipe, Green and Blue-winged Teal, Northern Shoveler, Belted Kingfisher, Yellow-rumped and Palm Warblers, Great Egret as well as American Pipit and Pied-billed Grebe.

A link to a photo of the Nelson’s Sparrow taken by Peter Burke is here.
