Philadelphia Vireo and other migrants, Loantaka Brook Reservation, 10-2-2011

From Tom Smith, Sunday, 10-2-2011 at Loantaka Brook Reservation. A link to a Google map is here:

Interestingly, I found another Philadelphia Vireo today by the pond at Loantaka. They must like it there. There were some other birds there as well: a few Blackpolls and Parulas, lots of Yellow-Rumps, Yellowthroat, Magnolia, and Red-Eyed Vireo, among others. Almost all the migrant passerines today were clustered around the eastern end of the pond near the spillway.
A migrant Osprey was circling the pond, but didn’t catch anything. Green-winged Teal have arrived – they usually spend the winter there.

American Golden Plovers in Somerset County, 9-28-2011

Jeff Ellerbusch reports the highest count of American Golden Plovers in Somerset County this season with 9 at what Google Maps labels as: “Wilhousky St., Weston Cross Way, Manville Causeway, and Weston Causeway”. How many names can a road have? This is the short stretch of road connecting County Rd. 533 and Weston Canal Road. In any case the coordinates are 40.528202,-74.585946. The birds were in a plowed field south of the road although many of the Am. Golden Plovers were not visible from the road. 50 Killdeer were also present. A high count of 88 Killdeer were there on Sunday.

Stilt Sandpiper and other shorebirds in Bridgewater, 9-24-2011

From Jamie Glydon:

After visiting the brig today and a few other places down south, I stopped by the “STS Parking lot” behind Patriots stadium. The sun was rapidly setting, so I didn’t have a lot of light.

I had the following:
1 Stilt Sandpiper
10+ Killdeer
2 White-rumped Sandpiper
2 Semipalmated Plover
8+ Semipalmated Sandpiper
1 Solitary Sandpiper
~4 Least Sandpiper
Mallard
Blue-winged Teal
1 Northern Shoveler

Some workers were there, but they ignored me. I hadn’t yet read Jonathan’s post about his last visit there. They may have ignored me because they were clearly done working and just goofing off. Anyway, before leaving I read Jonathan’s post and realized that he had a “discussion” with the foreman during his last visit. I’m not sure if there are any other areas in that locale where the birds can be viewed.

Caspian Terns at Budd Lake, 9-24-2011

This morning, 4 Caspian Terns were actively flying around Budd Lake in Mt. Olive Township, Morris County. Other than the terns and a small group of distant assumed Tree Swallows the lake was quiet. A tour of other Morris County lakes (Musconetcong, Mt. Hope, Boonton Reservoir) was unfruitful. Shorebird habitat is in short supply, if at all, in Morris County this year. The fields at St. Clare’s in Denvile (a.k.a. McCarter Park) which have been productive since Hurricane Irene are inaccessible once again due to flooding.

Submitted by Jonathan Klizas

Additional information from Tom Halliwell:

Two Caspians were still at Budd Lake at 1:00. The other two were probably the ones I saw at the theater-end of Lake Musconetcong 10 minutes later.

I was hoping to find something interesting at Kittatinny Valley SP, but all I got were mosquitos!

All the best,
Tom
