The section of Boonton Reservoir in the above photo is usually submerged under normal conditions. Not so this year.

The Asbury Park Press published a story on September 22 describing minor drought conditions in northern New Jersey. The article is here.

NOAA graphs show that in Morris and Somerset Counties only 20% of the average precipitation has occurred in the past 30 days, 40% in the past 60 days. Morris has 65% in the past 90 days and 70% in the past 120 days. Somerset hovers in the 80% range for those same time periods.

Click on the following links to view the NOAA graphs illustrating actual and normal precipitation during the past 365 days for Morris and Somerset Counties.

South Branch Preserve, Mt. Olive Twp., Sep. 21, 2014

NOTE: The Autumnal Equinox occurs at 10:29 PM EDT on Monday, September 22, 2014 (converted from 2:29 PM UTC, September 23, 2014).

The South Branch Preserve is in Mt. Olive Twp. It is not to be confused with the South Branch WMA in Hunterdon County and Hillsborough Twp. or any other area with South Branch in the name. Dan Fuller brought this place to the attention of mocosocoBirds readers in May when he reported three Mourning Warblers from the Preserve. That post is here.

As stated in the May 24 post: “Parking for the 200 acre South Branch Preserve in on Wolfe Rd. near its intersection with Rt. 46. The Land Conservancy of New Jersey hopes to grow this preserve to 1,000 acres as a protection for the headwaters of the South Branch of the Raritan River. The source of the South Branch is nearby Budd Lake, New Jersey’s largest natural lake.”

South Branch Preserve is an attractive site for birds as a visit there this morning demonstrated. It is easily combined with a trip to nearby Budd Lake.

The community garden and neighboring fields at the Preserve hosted many birds this morning: Field, Savannah and Song Sparrows as well as a family of Indigo Buntings and Eastern Bluebirds used the many fences and posts as perches making for easy viewing. Palm Warblers were in the vegetation near the ground. An American Kestrel was in the area.

A wide path parallels an exclosure-fenced field on one side and edge habitat on the other side. There is a side path to a blind in a swampy section of the South Branch of the Raritan River. A Great Blue Heron was there this morning. This looks like the type of location that could host interesting species in migration and is worth a visit if you are in the area.

Total: 47 Thanks to Nick, Joe/U.S. Navy active duty and Rob for assisting today. Special thanks also to Karen & Fred who assisted and were instrumental in sighting both of today’s Bald Eagles.

Weather:
Overnight/early morning showers and local fog ended 0930 and hawk watch began 1000 hrs. 100 cloud cover. Wind 0-5 mph from the south. Bursts of sunlight from 1100-1300 hrs which brought cloud cover to 75% Temp range: 67-74 F

Raptor Observations:
Slow raptor day, yet those seen were naked eye views and less than an approx. 5,000′ ceiling. The large groups of local TV & BV kept the visitors busy watching their flight. The accipiters and the American Kestrel were close views as they rose out of the valley in front of the watch. The three Broad-winged hawks lifted off from the valley, from the Boonton ARC property. (@1357 hrs)An adult BE dropped from a higher flight to the left of the hawk watch, caught a thermal, rose again and headed non-stop south. (@1447 hrs)An 4th year BE was viewed over Marcella Ridge and gave a lengthy view as well.

Non-raptor Observations:
No non raptor species, except for the local Raven, were at the watch today.

Predictions:
Tomorrow forecast sunny with a high of 66 F

Connecticut Warblers and Broad-winged Hawks, Sep. 19, 2014

Connecticut Warbler, Glenhurst Meadows, NJ, Sep. 19, 2014 (photo by Jeff Ellerbusch)

The assessment for the quality of the southbound migration in the mocosocoBirds region so far in 2014? Poor is an easy word to use. Light may be a kinder description at this time. The rest of September and October may make up for the slim pickings of late.

At least a few Broad-winged Hawks made it through this week. Connecticut Warblers are newsworthy.

The Broad-winged Hawk totals for the season so far are 4,856 at Chimney Rock and 6,404 at Wildcat Ridge. That is a low number for Chimney Rock but better than average for Wildcat Ridge. Daily totals for both hawk watches are published by mocosocoBirds.

Chimney Rock Hawk Watch has a new web site, www.crhw.org. Annual totals are found here.

Information regarding Wildcat Ridge Hawk Watch is found at the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection web site here. Hawkcount.org has the data for Wildcat Ridge but this writer is unable to find annual totals. Readers: please advise otherwise.

Connecticut Warblers appeared this week with reports from Glenhurst Meadows, Sept. 16 (Marc Chelemer), Sept. 18 (Kirsten Abildskov) and Sept. 19 (Jeff Ellerbusch, Simon Lane). The Great Swamp NWR had one report on Sept. 18 (Vince Capp).
