Philadelphia Vireo (PHVI) sightings raise interest due to the relative scarcity of valid reports in the north New Jersey region. There are yellowish Warbling Vireos this time of year as well as warblers of a similar appearance that can add to the identification confusion. The PHVI reported from Glenhurst Meadows this morning (Marc Chelemer and Robert Gallucci) is supported by Rob Gallucci’s photograph which displays enough field marks for a solid identification.

Other species reported at Glenhurst today include Black-and-white Warbler, 2 Nashville Warblers (with photograph), Common Yellowthroat, American Redstarts, Magnolia Warbler, Yellow Warbler and Chestnut-sided Warbler. Two Red-headed Woodpeckers were near the river. 6 Least Sandpipers, 3 Solitary Sandpipers and 1 Killdeer were also present.

Least Sandpipers are the expected peep at Glenhurst Meadows and throughout the mocosocoBirds region. Every year there are erroneous reports of Semipalmated Sandpipers at Glenhurst and other local birding sites – a checklist reporting Semipalmated Sandpipers and zero Least Sandpipers is a red flag. Please be careful in identifying small shorebirds. If it is a peep in Morris and Somerset Counties it is probably a Least Sandpiper. Semipalmated Sandpipers are uncommon in Somerset and almost rare in Morris.

Yellow-bellied Flycatcher, Timberbrook Lake, Rockaway Twp., NJ, Aug. 26, 2014 (photo by Jonathan Klizas)

The above photograph is of an Empidonax flycatcher seen this morning at Timberbrook Lake in Rockaway Township. The bird has a yellow cast over its entire body. It is smaller than a Red-eyed Vireo which was nearby. This eliminates Acadian and any other eastern empid except Least (LEFL) and Yellow-bellied (YBFL). The yellowish eye-ring strongly favors YBFL as does the overall greenish back and green-olive flanks (not clearly visible in the photo). The primary projection and shape of the wing tips suggest YBFL as described and critically compared with other species of the Empidonax complex in the American Birding Association article, Identifying Empinonax Flycatchers: The Ratio Approach by Forest Rowland , published in the March 2009 issue of Birding and available as a PDF online.

To quote the article: “If the tips of the primaries appear wide and rounded, they are likely short, as in Least and Dusky Flycatchers. If the primaries appear more tapered and pointed, that corresponds to a medium or long primary projection as seen in Yellow-bellied and “Traill’s” Flycatchers. And if the primaries appear slightly bowed or sword-shaped, as in Acadian and Hammond’s Flycatchers, that indicates especially long primary projection.”

The pictured Empid shows tapered wing tips. If the reader is unsure of the distinction between rounded and tapered wingtips, visit Vireo and look at Least Flycatcher photos to see the rounded tips illustrated.

Sunday Bird Notes, Aug. 24, 2014

What were 4 Little Blue Herons at the Lincoln Park Gravel Pits on August 21 became 5 this afternoon continuing the Little Blue Heron Summer of 2014. Also present were 7 Great Blue Herons, 8 Great Egrets, 3 Green Herons and an adult Black-crowned Night-Heron. 21 Killdeer, 5 Lesser Yellowlegs and 12 Least Sandpipers were tallied on the shorebird ledger.

Little Blue Herons are the main story this summer in Morris County with the 5 at the Lincoln Park Gravel Pits and 7 at Melanie Lane Wetlands. Not to be overlooked is the diminutive member of the Ardeids, the Green Heron. 7 were at Melanie late this afternoon. Green Herons will be found in double-digit numbers in appropriate wetlands at the current time.

Invasion of the Little Blue Herons, Aug. 21, 2014

Little Blue Herons, Lincoln Park Gravel Pits, NJ, Aug. 21, 2014 (photo by Jonathan Klizas)

Little Blue Herons, Lincoln Park Gravel Pits, NJ, Aug. 21, 2014 (photo by Jonathan Klizas)

The number continues to grow. The Little Blue Herons continue to multiply. What was four in July is now seven in Hanover Township’s Melanie Lane Wetlands. Two Little Blue Herons were at the Lincoln Park Gravel Pits in July. Today, there were four as seen in the photo at the top of this post. Finderne Wetlands in Somerset County has had one to two throughout July and August. Negri-Nepote Native Grassland Preserve had a pair in late July. This would barely raise an eyebrow in coastal locations but is unprecedented for inland Morris and Somerset Counties where one during an entire year is newsworthy.

An adult Little Blue Heron spent most of April at Loantaka Brook Reservation in Morris County. All of the Little Blue Herons seen this summer are juveniles. An excellent breeding year? Is there a viable explanation?

Why are juveniles white? Little Blue Herons are the only member of the Ardeidae family that shows age-specific dimorphism. Birds of North America Online (Cornell Lab of Ornithology and American Ornithologist’s Union) mentions the following benefits for white coloration of the juveniles:
1. Reduces heat stress (dark Little Blue Herons frequently forage in densely vegetated, shaded locales).
2. Advantageous for getting prey when least experienced at foraging.
3. Ability to integrate with other white ardeids reducing predation.
4. Enables them to forage near Snowy Egrets for greater success.

The above information and much more is found here, but a subscription is necessary to read it.

Finderne Wetlands continues to host at least one Snowy Egret along with 13 Great Egrets, 2-3 Great Blue Herons, 1 Green Heron, 1 Glossy Ibis, Solitary Sandpipers, Lesser Yellowlegs and Least Sandpipers (Vicki Schwartz).

Two Black-crowned Night-Herons (one juvenile), a Green Heron and Wood Ducks are at West End Pond near Green Brook Park (Walter Blenderman).

From Ken Hart:
Six Bobolinks were present at dusk at the Robert Stahl Natural Area in Bedminster. They were originally just southwest of the silo, occasionally flying as a group, circling, and landing again in another section of the fields. Much of the north field has been recently cut.

Along the very low ponds: Wood Duck, Green Heron (2) Killdeer, Solitary Sandpiper
(2), Great Blue Heron. Also, 11 Chimney Swifts.

(Click on the photo for a larger image.)

Two Snowy Egrets, rare for Somerset County, continue at Finderne Wetlands today. The number of herons in the area fluctuate throughout the day. The two Snowy Egrets in the photograph were seen in the morning when there were only 8 Great Egrets nearby (J. Klizas). Later in the day, only one Snowy Egret was visible but 23 Great Egrets had arrived along with a Little Blue Heron (Jeff Ellerbusch). The Glossy Ibis is steady and reliable.

Melanie Lane Wetlands, Hanover Township

After 6 p.m. at Melanie Lane Wetlands, Little Blue Herons were in view feasting on frogs, along with 5 Green Herons, a Great Blue Heron and a pair of Great Egrets. Suddenly, a few of the Little Blue Herons became extra alert because the following mammal was approximately 10 yards from them, looking at them intently.

After a tense minute, the Fox turned and took notice of another mammal standing a few yards away with all kinds of things strapped to his body and pointing a barrel shaped object with shiny glass at one end.

The fox retreated and disappeared after that.

At 6:45 p.m., the Herons and Egrets began flying around the pond with 7 Little Blue Herons eventually forming a tight group and flying off northward towards Troy Meadows. This seems to be the nightly pattern.

Wading Birds at Finderne Wetlands, Aug. 19, 2014

Glossy Ibis, Finderne Wetlands, NJ, Aug. 19, 2014 (photo by Jonathan Klizas)

Glossy Ibis, Finderne Wetlands, NJ, Aug. 19, 2014 (photo by Jonathan Klizas)

A Little Blue Heron and Glossy Ibis at Finderne Wetlands were eBirded yesterday, Aug. 18, by Kirsten Abildskov. Jeff Ellerbusch, Frank Sencher, Jr. and others descended on Finderne today. The final count of wading birds, give or take a few, is:
Great Blue Heron – 4
Great Egret – 22
Snowy Egret – 2
Little Blue Heron – 1
Green Heron – 1
Black-crowned Night-Heron – 2

Shorebirds present include: 1 Semipalmated Plover, 8 Killdeer, 4 Solitary Sandpipers, 1 Lesser Yellowlegs, 13 Least Sandpipers, 1 Semipalmated Sandpiper. Some of the shorebirds are on gravel bars in the Raritan River viewable from the park on Duke Parkway East.

One Little Blue Heron alone in Somerset County is impressive. 1 Glossy Ibis by itself is impressive. Add two Snowy Egrets (just one is extra-noteworthy), a rare visitor to both Morris and Somerset Counties, and a pair of Black-crowned Night-Herons as well as double-digit Great Egrets and the expected Great Blue and Green Herons and you have an unprecedented collection of species for the area. This event continues the exceptional year of 2014 for Herons, Egrets and Glossy Ibis in both Morris and Somerset Counties.

The story of the tagged Great Egret found yesterday at Melanie Lane Wetlands in Hanover Twp. is revealed. Susan Elbin, the director of Conservation and Science at New York City Audubon, wrote that 10D was tagged at Elder’s Marsh, Jamaica Bay on 10 July 2014. Dr. Elbin is also the president of The Waterbird Society.

Caspian Tern, Little Blue Herons, Chimney Swift article, Aug. 18, 2014

Caspian Tern at Chimney Rock

A Caspian Tern was seen and photographed flying over Chimney Rock this morning (Jeff Ellerbusch). This is the second flyover Caspian Tern at Chimney Rock in 2014. The first was on May 4. Other species found there today include Least Flycatcher, Blue-winged, Black-and-white, Blackburnian, Chestnut-sided and Canada Warblers, Common Yellowthroat and American Redstart.

2 Semipalmated Plovers are at Finderne Wetlands (J. Ellerbusch)

7 Little Blue Herons in Hanover Township

One birder viewing from the north corroborated what another birder saw from the south confirming what a third birder thought he had seen earlier in the week: 7 juvenile Little Blue Herons at Melanie Lane Wetlands this afternoon (J. Klizas, Julie Buechner, Chuck Hantis in that order). As far as is known, this is a record high count for Morris County and undoubtedly more than most observers have seen in one place at one time anywhere other than coastal New Jersey.

The wading bird show continues at Melanie Lane with 4 Great Egrets appearing today, one of them tagged as shown in the photo below. This is probably a Jamaica bay-tagged individual similar to one found at this same location in 2012.

Birds of Glenhurst Meadows, Aug. 16, 2014

Glenhurst Meadows is getting into southward-bound-migration shape as evidenced by the eBird report by Jeff Ellerbusch reproduced, in part, below:

Killdeer – 4
Spotted Sandpiper – 2
Solitary Sandpiper – 1
Greater Yellowlegs – 2
Lesser Yellowlegs – 2
Least Sandpiper – 5

2 Red-headed Woodpeckers are in the area. A Least Flycatcher was seen.

13 warbler species are tallied: Ovenbird, Northern Waterthrush, Blue-winged and Black-and-white Warblers, Mourning Warbler (photographed by Harvey Tomlinson and viewable on his Flickr page, here. Other warblers: Common Yellowthroat, American Redstart, Blackburnian, Yellow, Chestnut-sided, Prairie and Canada Warblers. A female Golden-winged Warbler was spotted by Harvey Tomlinson.

Parsippany Night-Herons

Jefferson Road Pond, Parsippany is quiet of late but the Night-Herons continue sporadically. 5 Black-crowned Night-Herons and 1 Yellow-crowned Night-Heron were eBirded by Julie Buechner on August 14. They are apparently using the island and other nearby locations for roosting.

Chimney Swifts of Raritan and other field notes, Aug. 15, 2014

Chimney Swifts of Raritan

From Pete Bacinski:
“Sandra Escala and I have been monitoring an old industrial chimney on Orlando Drive in Raritan about a mile west of Route 206. Last night we estimated about 1,000 Chimney Swifts there at dusk entering the chimney. There is ample parking there. Two years ago, I estimated 5,000 birds. The colony grows as more birds join it as they move south.”

[Editor’s note: the building is near the bridge over River Road and is thought to be property of Duke Farms. Pete will have an article regarding Chimney Swifts and this location in NJ.com in the next few days].

And then there were six…

They gather on the snag in the waning light. 6 Little Blue Herons, the high count so far, were seen and photographed at Melanie Lane Wetlands by Chuck Hantis after 6 p.m. this evening. The regular pair of Great Egrets continue as well. The Snowy Egret of a few days ago has not been seen since.

Whip-poor-will in Great Swamp NWR

From Terry Carruthers:
“An Eastern Whip-poor-will just passed east along Whitebridge Rd, near the old cement plant. It was 8:30 pm and the bird was calling actively. A Barred Owl was also calling nearby.”
