Eagle Nest at Duke Farms Damaged by October Storm

A notice on the Duke Farms Facebook page mentions the status of the Bald Eagle nest at Duke Farms. Unfortunately, the web-cam outfitted nest “suffered considerable damage” by Hurricane Sandy, October 29, 2012. The link to the full posting at Duke Farms web site is here. Fortunately, there are signs the Eagles have been in the area since the storm. Hopefully, they will attempt to rebuild somewhere in the vicinity of the old nest.

The Boonton Christmas Bird Count 2012: a brief history, species list, and an invitation

Floyd Wolfarth, an historical figure in New Jersey birding and a co-founder of the Urner Ornithological Club, was instrumental in founding the Boonton Christmas Bird Count (CBC) in 1936. The Urner Club has sponsored the event ever since. December 23, 2012 marks the 77th consecutive year of this count.

Mocosocobirds.com is the Internet home for the Boonton CBC.
A brief history of and an introduction to the Boonton CBC is at this web address:
https://mocosocobirds.com/birds-of-morris-county-n-j/boontoncbc/

A list of the species and their occurrences on the count is found at the link below:
https://mocosocobirds.com/birds-of-morris-county-n-j/boontoncbc/species-list/

Maps of the territories of the count are on the following web page:
https://mocosocobirds.com/birds-of-morris-county-n-j/boontoncbc/maps-boonton-cbc/

As the compiler of the Boonton CBC commencing this year, I extend an invitation to everyone to take part in the Boonton CBC in any way that you can. Whether it is a feeder watch within the count area, an hour or two spent working an area, a morning or a full day, any contribution to this valuable endeavor is of great importance and warmly appreciated.

Please use the following contact information for the count:

Crossbills and Red-breasted Mergansers, Nov. 25, 2012

It was a quiet closing to the Thanksgiving weekend in our area on this Sunday. One each of Red and White-winged Crossbills, vocalizing flyovers, along with a Pine Siskin were heard at Chimney Rock by Jeff Ellerbusch, Simon Lane and me. A continuing Winter Wren was also heard.
==========================
Jamie Glydon relocated the two Red-breasted Mergansers at Lake Parsippany. These are probably the same two seen on Nov. 23.

Bonaparte’s Gull at Mt. Hope Lake, Nov. 24, 2012

Two adult Bald Eagles, probably the local residents, were active at Mt. Hope Lake in Rockaway Township on this cold, blustery afternoon. At one point one of the Eagles was dive-bombing a small group of Ruddy Ducks. The Ruddys dove quickly underwater to elude the Eagle. It was during this drama that a whitish bird with tern-like acrobatic flight caught this observer’s attention. The bird dropped into the water, oblivious to the Bald Eagle nearby, and revealed itself as a Bonaparte’s Gull. It sat on the water offering a definitive profile view. After counting the roughly 650 Ruddy Ducks on the lake I turned to look for the Bonaparte’s Gull…and it was gone – nowhere to be found. This represents the only Bonaparte’s Gull reported in Morris County for 2012. Morris missed the Bonaparte’s extravaganza in Somerset County on the Raritan River during April 2012 where at one time the count of Bonaparte’s Gulls was 327.

Species on Mt. Hope Lake included:
Mute Swan – 10
Gadwall – 2 (probably more flew away)
American Wigeon – Only a few on the lake. Most were airborne when the Bald Eagle started cruising the duck flocks.
Ring-necked Ducks – 50
Lesser Scaup – 5
Bufflehead – 8
Ruddy Duck – 650
Bald Eagle – 2 adults
American Coot – 50, at least.
Bonaparte’s Gull – 1

Late Barn Swallow in Mt. Olive Township; Red-throated Loon continues at Budd Lake, Nov. 23, 2012

From Alan Boyd:

Hi Jonathan,
This afternoon there was a late Barn Swallow at the Tilcon Pond off Bell’s Lane in Mt Olive. The only other birds of note on the property were two Ruddies and a Kestrel.

Tom’s Red-throated Loon was still at the back end of Budd Lake this afternoon at 3:30, almost lost in a raft of gulls.
– Alan Boyd

[Editor’s note: Interestingly, a single Barn Swallow was observed at Spruce Run Reservoir in Hunterdon County today.]

Loons and Red-breasted Mergansers in Morris Co., Nov. 23, 2012

The Red-throated Loon at Budd Lake found earlier this morning by Tom Halliwell was still there at 11:40. It was distant and in the middle of the lake. This is the only report of a Red-throated Loon in Morris County in 2012.

2 Red-breasted Mergansers and a Common Loon made up for the lack of species diversity at Lake Parsipanny this afternoon. This is only the second record of Red-breasted Merganser for Morris County in 2012. The first was on April 1 at the same location.

Red-throated Loon at Budd Lake, Nov. 23, 2012

From Tom Halliwell:

Hi Jon,
There was a Red-throated Loon on Budd Lake at 10:00 this morning (Friday). Not much else: a few Ruddies and a distant flock of scaup, presumably Lessers.

Happy Black Friday,
Tom Halliwell

Cackling Geese, a late Green Heron, Lincoln’s Sparrow, Nov. 21, 2012

This afternoon, Jeff Ellerbusch and I saw eleven Cackling Geese in the fenced pasture next to Selody Sod Farm in Montgomery Township. The Cackling Geese were together in a group as the photo below illustrates. There were 1,600 Canada Geese in the same field for comparison. 15 Horned Larks were also in the area as well as Killdeer and American Pipits.

=================================================
A late Green Heron was seen this afternoon walking along the edge of the pond on Old Harter Road at Spring Brook Country Club, Morris Township. The pond is a water hazard next to an elevated tee of a Par 3 golf hole. eBird shows only 3 records for Green Heron in New Jersey for November, 2012. There was a late December record at Spruce Run in Hunterdon County in 2011. It has appeared on the Boonton Christmas Bird Count in December twice in the 1990’s. I am sure it has records on the Great Swamp Christmas Count. Nonetheless, it was quite the surprise this afternoon for a north Jersey location.
=================================================
Yesterday, Jamie Glydon saw what must be the continuing Lincoln’s Sparrow of Sayre’s Farm in Morris Township. If it is the same individual, it has been at this location since approximately October 7.

Crossbills and a Redpoll in the Great Swamp N.W.R., Nov. 18, 2012

The morning was frosty today at the overlook on Pleasant Plains Road in the Great Swamp N.W.R. for Jeff Ellerbusch, Simon Lane and me. Some excellent ears (not mine) were able to instantly pick out definitive calls of a White-winged Crossbill, Red Crossbill and Common Redpoll as they flew over between 6:30 and 8:30 a.m.

Highlights from Pleasant Plains Road:
Northern Harrier
Cooper’s Hawk – 2
Bald Eagle – (probable 1st year)
Red-shouldered Hawk
Eastern Screech-Owl
American Kestrel
Eastern Bluebirds – 15
Hermit Thrush
American Pipit – 4
Rusty Blackbird – 4
Red Crossbill – sounded like type 3
White-winged Crossbill
Common Redpoll
Pine Siskin – 2
