Red Crossbills and Common Redpolls at Chimney Rock, Nov. 14, 2012

It was a morning filled with finches at Chimney Rock. In most years, the 11 Purple Finches and other Pine Siskins, American Goldfinches and House Finches that flew over the ridge this morning would have made for a remarkable day. However, this is the autumn of 2012 and expectations have grown for other, less typical species. Jeff Ellerbusch managed an impressive haul this morning with 2 Red Crossbills and 3 Common Redpolls. A group of White-winged Crossbills, which are practically common at Chimney Rock recently, was heard as well. The Common Redpolls and Red Crossbills are the first reported from Somerset County in 2012. The Common Redpolls may be the first reported from Somerset County since the 1990s together with only a few reports of Red Crossbills since that time. Chimney Rock has an impressive list of winter finches for 2012 with Red and White-winged Crossbills, Common Redpolls, Evening Grosbeaks, Purple Finches and Pine Siskins. What is next?
