Prothonotary Warblers at Lord Stirling Park, 4/28/2011

Joe Pescatore reports 2 Prothonotary Warblers at 7:00 a.m. at the usual spot by the rebuilt East Observation Tower at Lord Stirling Park. Also, a Veery at Scherman-Hoffman in Bernardsville.

Shorebirds on Opie Rd., Hillsborough Township, 4-26-27-2011

Frank Sencher Jr. found 3 Greater Yellowlegs, 1 Killdeer, 4 Wilson’s Snipe and 1 Least Sandpiper on Opie Rd. in Hillsborough Township Tuesday, 4/26. The Least Sandpiper and two of the Wilson’s Snipe were still present this morning, 4/27, in a puddle across from the Neshanic Valley maintenance area on Opie Rd. Also, a Ring-necked Pheasant was heard calling.

Red-headed Woodpecker and arrivals at the Tourne, Boonton Township, 4-25-2011

Late morning – the Red-headed Woodpecker present throughout the winter continues in the Beaver Swamp at the Tourne.

Also at the Tourne:
Green Heron
Wood Thrush (singing)
Great-crested Flycatcher
Brown Creeper
Yellow-rumped Warbler
Palm Warbler
Pine Warbler

A Broad-winged Hawk was continuously calling from the wet woods area near the sparrow fields.

Vireos and Warblers at Pleasant Plains Rd., Great Swamp N.W.R., 4-25-2011

Between 6:45 and 7:15 this morning the closed bridge at Pleasant Plains Rd. experienced the classic “trees dripping with birds” phenomena. The difficulty in the gray light was picking the other species out from the abundant Yellow-rumped Warblers.

Ruby-crowned Kinglet – 5
Blue-winged Warbler – 1
Northern Parula – 2
