Purple Finches, Yellow Warbler, etc., Apr. 14, 2015

Hold onto your binoculars – spring migration is revving up into high gear already – and it goes by quickly.

Purple Finches

Alan Boyd reports 18 Purple Finches at his feeder in Roxbury Twp. this morning.

(Photo by Alan Boyd – click on the photo for a larger image.)

30 Purple Finches are reported at a feeder in Warren Township (Liz Mershon).

From Bobby Skrabal, Hillsborough Twp.:
“There must have been some good fallout due to the rain. I woke up to hear my first Eastern Towhee of the year singing. Then there were 8 Purple Finches at our feeder. I went outside to take a look around and saw a Pine Siskin and my first Blue-Headed Vireo of the year.”

Other reports from people’s feeders in the area repeat the same scenario: Purple Finches are on the move.

Yellow Warbler, Chimney Swifts

A singing Yellow Warbler was at Lord Stirling Park this morning along with a House Wren, Green Heron and Chimney Swift. (Jeff Ellerbusch).

2 Chimney Swifts were at Colonial Park, Franklin  Twp. this afternoon (J. Klizas).

Other Field Notes

John J. Collins eBirded a Ruby-throated Hummingbird from his yard in Raritan.

16 Common Loons continue at Boonton Reservoir (Julie Buechner).

6 Red-breasted Mergansers were in the Raritan River along the Delaware and Raritan Canal Towpath (Jeff Ellerbusch).

Palm Warblers and Blue-gray Gnatcatchers were more prevalent today. Fish Crows continue to be numerous. Chipping Sparrows are everywhere. Northern Flickers come in threes and fours. Ducks are dwindling if not gone entirely.

(Click on the photo for a larger image.)

The spring of 2015 in Morris County will be remembered for loons and grebes. Unprecedented numbers continue to occur on the larger bodies of water, especially Lake Hopatcong and Boonton Reservoir.

42 Common Loons are at Lake Hopatcong from Bertrand Island to Lake Forest. Horned Grebes were either hiding or absent. A beautiful Red-necked Grebe (pictured above) was floating near the Lake Forest Yacht Club. Adding to the mix were 5 Bonaparte’s Gulls and 1 Lesser Black-backed Gull. The Bald Eagles of Halsey Island have two eaglets poking their heads out of the distant nest.

Boonton Reservoir tallied 40 Common Loons this afternoon. 25 were in one group. A flotilla of 7 Red-necked Grebes was in the same area as the loon raft. 11 Horned Grebes were scattered at the north end of the reservoir. A lone Red-throated Loon was also in the north end (see photo below with the classic, distant “Boonton” look). 3 Bonaparte’s Gulls were resting in the water.

Tringas are here. A few isolated reports of Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs occurred last week. Today, there were 3 Greater Yellowlegs and 1 Lesser Yellowleg at Melanie Lane Wetlands along with 28 visible and actively feeding Wilson’s Snipe. The Blue-winged Teal count is now 4. 2-3 charcoal-dark Rusty Blackbirds continue to be found along the south end of the area. 2 Northern Shovelers are still present as well as 20+ Green-winged Teal and Gadwall.

2 Greater Yellowlegs were also seen today at the “Snow Goose” temporary pond of Beacon Hill Rd., Long Valley (David Bernstein).

An American Bittern was at the Wildlife Observation Center of the Great Swamp NWR
this morning (Simon Lane).

The first tern of 2015 in the mocosocoBirds region was found today by Mike Ostrow: a Caspian Tern in the southern section of Lake Musconetcong. It was present late this afternoon as other birders viewed it from Koclas Drive. Other species of interest at the lake today are 2 Red-necked Grebes and 2 Red-breasted Mergansers.

Red-necked Grebes, Boonton Reservoir, Apr. 11, 2015 (distant photo by Jonathan Klizas)

2 Red-necked Grebes continue at Boonton Reservoir. They are often viewed from the north end of the reservoir giving that classic distant Boonton look. 22 Common Loons continue as well as 4 or 5 Horned Grebes. A group of 4 Bonaparte’s Gulls was flying back and forth at the north end this morning. Pine Siskins were in the trees by the walkway. These Siskins are probably the same as those wintering in the neighboring cemetery. A Common Raven flew over the walkway.

Two Bald Eagles are regularly seen at the top of the island. One is an adult type; the other is an immature seen in the photo below. The 125+ Double-crested Cormorants and approximately 40 Great Blue Herons nesting on the island do not seem disturbed by the eagles’ presence.

An interesting development on the island of the reservoir the past two years is the consistent sighting of Great Egrets. 8 Great Egrets were scattered near the ground in the trees at the base of the island this morning.

175 Common Mergansers remain.  Seeing them breast-stroke in unison rather than fly when fleeing an area is a sight to enjoy.

2 Red-throated Loons and another group of 7 Bonaparte’s Gulls were seen after dawn at the north end of the reservoir (Simon Lane). The Red-throated Loons were not seen the remainder of the day.

Other field notes

Purple Martins have finally arrived at Spring Brook Country Club, Morris Twp. 6 were flying over the clubhouse and main pond this morning.

A Broad-winged Hawk is reported from high over the clubhouse this afternoon (David Bernstein).

11 Blue-winged Teal were at the Wildlife Observation Center of the Great Swamp NWR this morning (John Beetham).

Zero Blue-winged Teal were at Fish Tract in Florham Park today. 6 were there on Thursday, Apr. 9.

2 Blue-winged Teal continue at Melanie Lane Wetlands.

Budd Lake had 2 Common Loons, 2 Horned Grebes, 2 Red-breasted Mergansers and a small assortment of Buffleheads and Common Mergansers this afternoon.

Lake Musconetcong added a Red-necked Grebe to the continuing 10 Horned Grebes, 1 Common Loon, 4 Red-breasted Mergansers, 170 Ring-necked Ducks and 100 Common Mergansers.

A quick trip to southern Lake Hopatcong revealed 4 Common Loons, 1 Horned Grebe, 4 Red-breasted Mergansers, 2 Common Goldeneye and an adult Lesser Black-backed Gull keeping company with a floating group of 180 Herring Gulls and a few Ring-billed Gulls.

Boonton Reservoir’s Loon count today is approximately 26 with 1 Red-necked Grebe and 8 Horned Grebes.

At sunset, 17 Common Loons were easily counted resting on Lake Parsippany along with 1 Horned Grebe.

A Lesser Black-backed Gull was with 250 Ring-billed Gulls this morning on Opie Road, Hillsborough Twp.

Yesterday, April 9, Chuck Smith found a Red-necked Grebe on the Pompton River side of Two Bridges in Lincoln Park.

Loons, Grebes and Thursday Bird Notes, Apr. 9, 2015

Morris Loons

Boonton Reservoir has 35 Common Loons, at least 10 Horned Grebes and at least 1 Red-necked Grebe. Half of the birds were viewed from the north end; half from the south where visibility was poor. 40 Common Loons were viewed from only the north end of the reservoir yesterday.

Two Bald Eagles, one adult and one immature, stood sentry over the island although the nesting Great Blue Herons and Double-crested Cormorants in residence seemed not to notice.

Lake Parsippany is down to 12 Common Loons and a diminishing number of waterfowl.

Lake Musconetcong has 2 Common Loons, 5 Horned Grebes, 4 Red-breasted Mergansers and a Bonaparte’s Gull today (Alan Boyd).

(Click on the photo for a larger image.)

The Fish Tract in Florham Park is a low-lying section functioning as a flood plain of the Passaic River. It is a neighbor to private land owned by the East Orange Water Company.

The Fish Tract has intriguing habitat but is not an easy place in which to get around. No trails exist. It is supposedly public land bought by the borough of Florham Park. A crossbow wielding hunter told this writer last autumn that certain areas are private. There was no argument on this individual’s part.

It is a “you-are-on-your-own” location, but one with attractive habitat and interesting birds. It is usually flooded in the spring. If you do go, use stealth and try to stay in the woods to view any water birds. Otherwise, they will flush easily.

Late this afternoon, the following birds were in attendance: 6 Blue-winged Teal in three pairs of males and females, 2 Northern Pintails, 42 Green-winged Teal, 2 Killdeer and 16 Wilson’s Snipe. The mocosocoBirds region’s first Blue-gray Gnatcatcher of 2015 was travelling the understory. A flock of 18 Cedar Waxwings were near the parking area before flying off. 250+ Red-winged Blackbirds, almost all females, were feeding on the wet grounds and water’s edge. At least 5 Rusty Blackbirds were in their company.

Blue-winged Teal are in various places at present. Besides the 6 in Florham Park, Melanie Lane Wetlands has 2; Mike Newlon had 5 at the Great Swamp NWR today; 2 were found yesterday in Long Valley and 3 continue at Finderne Wetlands.

15 airborne Bonaparte’s Gulls circled the Norz Farm fields and power lines on River Road in Hillsborough Twp. this afternoon before drifting north. At least 3 partially hooded Bonaparte’s Gulls were on the ground with the 200+ Ring-billed Gulls on the farm fields.

Long-tailed Ducks at Lake Hopatcong

(Long-tailed Ducks, Bertrand Island, Lake Hopatcong, NJ – photo by Alan Boyd)

7 Long-tailed Ducks were in the waters north of Bertrand Island, Lake Hopatcong today. 2 remaining Redheads were also in the rough waters on this raw, chilly day (Alan Boyd). 5 Redheads were at the lake since Feb. 28. Only a male and female are left of that group.

Elsewhere on the lake, this observer tallied 30 Green-winged Teal, 40 Ring-necked Ducks, 2 Greater Scaup, 67 Bufflehead, 12 Hooded Mergansers, 550 Common Mergansers, 1 Red-breasted Merganser, 1 Horned Grebe and…14 Common Loons. More on this later.

3 adult Lesser Black-backed Gulls were in the water with a group of mostly Herring Gulls southwest of Nolan’s Point. A conservative count of 400 Tree Swallows traveled over much of the surface of the lake this afternoon. Incidentally, Lake Hopatcong is entirely thawed.

Bonaparte’s Gull at Lake Musconetcong

A lone Bonaparte’s Gull was resting in the water today at Lake Musconetcong. 7 Red-breasted Mergansers, joined 11 Horned Grebes and…4 Common Loons (Alan Boyd). Common Mergansers and Ring-necked Ducks continue in smaller numbers than in the past week.

3 Osprey were at the northeastern section of the lake in the late afternoon.

Red-necked Grebes and Loon-acy in Morris

2 Red-necked Grebes were at the north end of Boonton Reservoir late today. The grebes were swimming near a raft of 20 Common Loons. Scanning the waters turned up a count of 40 Common Loons either resting or gently floating. The entire mid-section and south end of the reservoir were not checked so the real count could be higher.

Lake Parsippany had 15 Common Loons today, down from the 24 loons on the lake the previous two days. 3 Red-breasted Mergansers kept to themselves and were separate from the 130 Common Mergansers on the northwest part of the lake.

This past week has seen an unprecedented flight of loons in Morris County. The previous known high count for Lake Parsippany was 4. That count was obliterated all week with yesterday’s count of 24 representing the all-time high.

Boonton Reservoir’s previous high count was 35 in 2011. Today’s count of 40 replaces that record.

Add 14 Common Loons at Lake Hopatcong, 4 at Lake Musconetcong and 3 at Budd Lake as well as 40 at Boonton and 15 at Lake Parsippany and one has an historic trend for the county.

Today demonstrated a movement of Bonaparte’s Gulls, Red-breasted Mergansers, Common Loons, Osprey and Tree Swallows. 3 Little Gulls at Spruce Run in Hunterdon County went undetected in Morris County.

3 Long-tailed Ducks were found at Lake Musconetcong this afternoon by Alan Boyd. Alan also found a trio of Long-tailed Ducks at Budd Lake.

Lake Musconetcong also had 8 Horned Grebes, a Common Loon and at least 2 Red-breasted Merganser hens. The large Common Merganser flock has dwindled.

The 24 Common Loons at Lake Parsippany tallied yesterday by Tim Vogle continue today. This is, by far, the largest group of Common Loons ever recorded at the lake, as far as is known.

At least 11 Common Loons are at Boonton Reservoir along with 200 Common Mergansers.

A Lesser Black-backed Gull was found today at Bertrand Island, Lake Hopatcong (Alan Boyd). Elsewhere at Lake Hopatcong, 4 Common Loons and hundreds of Common Mergansers were present.

The Delaware and Raritan Canal Towpath had 60 Northern Rough-winged Swallows and 250 Tree Swallows (Jeff Ellerbusch).
