The Ides of March

Raw and blustery defines today’s weather. Thawing is at a slow pace. Most Morris lakes remain frozen without any immediate melting of the ice in sight. As an example for today, ice fishing remains a popular activity on Lake Hopatcong.

Gulls in Hillsborough Twp.

Five species of gulls are reported today from the Norz farm fields along River Road, south of South Branch Road in Hillsborough Township (Glenn Mahler via eBird). An Iceland Gull and Lesser Black-backed Gull joined a Herring and Great Black-backed Gull along with hundreds of Ring-billed Gulls. Glenn also reports a high-flying light morph Rough-legged Hawk from the same location.

Most species listed in the mocosocoBirds region the past few days remain.

Morris County’s first Wilson’s Snipe of 2015 was at rest at Melanie Lane Wetlands this morning.

“Vulture roost, Green Pond Rd.
Over 100 vultures, all Blacks except about 6 Turkeys.
Good laugh – watching many roosting on the local day care facility playground equipment.”

The Raptor Trust Requests, March 2015

The very harsh winter this year (and last) has really put a strain on wildlife, and consequently on wildlife rehabilitators. Waterfowl have been hard pressed to find food with many bodies of water frozen solid for weeks or months at a time. Predatory birds like raptors have had a difficult time as well. With fields and farmlands covered in snow, small rodents can remain hidden under the snow. Many birds (and other wildlife) have been forced to find food along roadsides where the snow melts first. As a result, more animals have been struck by vehicles. Also, the harsh chemicals and salt used to melt snow and ice on roadways build up in the animals systems when they feed in those areas. In high enough concentrations, the chemicals are toxic and some of the birds we have seen have arrived in advanced stages of renal failure, anemic and with various other maladies.

Here at The Raptor Trust’s infirmary we have already admitted more birds than any other year in our 30+ year history. This is historically our slow time of the year when we catch up on cleaning and maintenance. Instead, our staff is working overtime just to care for the huge numbers of injured and starving birds which have been admitted. Our costs for food (mice and rats for raptors, live fish for some of the waterfowl and eagles, live insects for songbirds, etc.) have gone way up.

Of the hundreds of birds we have admitted already this year, we have seen larger numbers than usual of some of the common residents in the area – many, many Red-Tailed Hawks, Mallards and Canada Geese. Even some of those birds make for interesting stories though. One Red-tail, for instance, came in that was banded over 20 years ago.

Among the more interesting and/or uncommon waterfowl we have cared for:

2 Ruddy Ducks, a Red-throated Loon that was frozen to the ground and had to be chiseled out, a Black Duck, 2 Red-neck Grebes, one Gadwall, and a Lesser Scaup.

We have also admitted some uncommon raptors. More Red-Shouldered Hawks than usual, a Rough-legged Hawk, 2 Merlins, and a Saw-whet Owl.

All in all, we have already admitted close to 300 birds this year in what is normally the slow season. Add in the strain on the maintenance staff to deal with snow removal, frozen water in the bird cages, heaving and shifting ground underneath the cages, and flooding when the snow melts…well, it’s already been a heck of a year. – Chris Soucy

Lesser Black-backed Gull; Rainy Day Bird Notes, Mar. 14, 2015

A beautiful Lesser Black-backed Gull (LBBG) in adult breeding plumage appeared briefly at Melanie Lane Wetlands this afternoon. After landing amidst the roosting Ring-billed Gulls on the ice, the LBBG flew for a short distance landing twenty feet from the Ring-billed Gulls (see the photo above). It then went aloft once more, circling the wetlands many times before gaining altitude and heading north towards Troy Meadows.

This is the only record of Lesser Black-backed Gull in either Morris or Somerset Counties so far in 2015.

Note the long tapered wings in the above photo which contribute to the long wing projection when the species is at rest. This individual has a distinct mirror on P10 (primary no. 10) but none on P9. Howell and Dunn (Gulls of the Americas – Houghton Mifflin 2007) state that 50% of LBBG have a P9 mirror. The photos are taken at a distance in poor lighting, but the reddish orbital ring was discernible in the field.

Other Field Notes

A rainy morning brought out masses of the Icterids that have invaded  the mocosocoBirds region during the past week. Rusty Blackbirds made a showing at the Great Swamp NWR.

Pine Siskins continue their loyalty to the locations they have inhabited for the past month, namely, feeding stations they seem to prefer.

2 Common Redpolls were at a feeder in Butler, again (Jim Schlickenrieder).

The 5 Redheads, Greater Scaup hen, American Coots and Hooded Merganser continue at the very little open water on Bertrand Island, Lake Hopatcong (Rob Gallucci).

Killdeer reports were more widespread today in Morris County than any other time recently. The snow continues to melt but many of the Morris lakes are still frozen

Friday Bird Notes, Mar. 13, 2015

Randy Little, et al, saw the first two Tree Swallows of 2015 in Morris County at the overlook on Pleasant Plains Rd., Great Swamp NWR this afternoon.

Also at the overlook, a light morph Rough-legged Hawk was seen in the distance at the this morning (Alan Boyd).

Killdeer are slowly returning: one at The Tourne (Julie Buechner), another at the Passaic River in Florham Park (Mike Ostrow) and several appearances at Loantaka Brook Reservation this week (Leslie Webster). Somerset County has a slightly larger number of Killdeer and reports.

From Susan Treesh:
“Not the first to report these, but had a American Woodcock peenting and flying behind my house in Somerset tonight. Also, today was Grackle Day, the day when hordes of blackbirds rampage through the feeders. Mixed in were cowbirds and red-winged blackbirds.”

The Raritan River and its North and South Branches have thawed. The large bodies of water in Morris County remain frozen. The small amount of open water near the docks of Bertrands Island, Lake Hopatcong continue to have 5 Redheads, 1 Greater Scaup, American Coot and a Hooded Merganser as of yesterday.

3 Common Ravens joined the Wild Turkey above along with a noisy group of Common Grackles and Red-winged Blackbirds at the Raptor Trust on White Bridge Road, Great Swamp NWR
.

Iceland Gull, Tree Swallows, Rusty Blackbird

A first cycle Iceland Gull was with the 286 Ring-billed Gulls, 1,500 Canada Geese and assorted other species at the manure fields on River Road south of South Branch Road in Hillsborough this afternoon (Jeff Ellerbusch).

The season’s first three Tree Swallows were at the Studdiford Drive section of the South Branch of the Raritan River (J. Ellerbusch).

Jeff also had a Rusty Blackbird singing on Opie Road, Branchburg. This section of the South Branch of the Raritan River has thawed and had Common Goldeneye, Red-breasted and Common Mergansers.

Zach Batren led a Woodcock walk at Fairview Farm and found an American Woodcock in the woods. Hermit Thrush, Fox Sparrow and the typical species of the area were also seen.

A light morph Rough-legged Hawk hunted the fields of the Great Swamp NWR along Pleasant Plains Rd. this afternoon (Chuck Hantis, Steve Kuitems).

mocosocoBirds commented on the dearth of Common Grackles this winter in a recent post, here. They are scarce no more.

Small groups were seen in Hillsborough Twp. this afternoon. A mini-blast of Common Grackles, along with much smaller amounts of Red-winged Blackbirds and Brown-headed Cowbirds, was seen near Black Brook along White Bridge Road in the Great Swamp NWR. The harshness of winter is beginning to seem like a long time ago.

Red-winged Blackbird song is slowly starting to fill the air.

Sunday Bird Notes, Mar. 8, 2015

Today was a gorgeous, sunny day as the thermometer neared 50 F degrees this afternoon. The sight and sound of snow melting is a beautiful thing.

A Long-tailed Duck drake is reported from the Delaware & Raritan Canal near South Bound Brook (Mike Adams via eBird). This is a great find for Somerset County.

And then there were 10. Redhead numbers continue to grow at the little open water existing at Bertrands Island, Lake Hopatcong. 5 males and 5 females are reported by Tom Justesen and Chuck Hantis this afternoon doubling the total seen yesterday.

How often do Common Grackles make the news. They are nearly absent through the winter of 2014-15, other than a sporadic report now and then. Randy Little had one at his feeder in Basking Ridge, March 5. Jennifer Books reports some at her feeder today. Roger Johnson tallied 14 at Troy Meadows today. A pattern is developing. Let’s look at the numbers.

The following data are from eBird. The 2014 and 2015 totals are through the first week of March in both years.  The Total Ind. column is the total number of Co. Grackles recorded during the stated period. The Checklists column is the total number of checklists recording Co. Grackles. Keep in mind that the winter of 2013-14 was the harshest in memory.

That is not a typo. The totals for Morris and Somerset Counties in 2015 so far are:
– 115 Co. Grackles on 18 checklists.

During the same time period in 2014 with weather considered even harsher than the winter of 2014-15, the totals for both counties are:
– 28,040 Co. Grackles on 198 checklists.

Daylight Savings Time begins tomorrow, Sunday, March 8.

The weather forecast through March 16 predicts daytime high temperatures in the 40+ F degree range. No snowflake icons are noted during this forecast period. At last, a thaw is in sight.

With the dense snowpack currently covering Morris and Somerset Counties and the frigid temperatures enveloping the region for most of the winter, it is hard to grasp that spring migration is at our doorstep.

The slight amount of open water surrounding the docks at Bertrands Island, Lake Hopatcong, continue to have many of the same ducks as seen last weekend; 5 Redheads, 1 Greater Scaup, 1 Hooded Merganser, 4 American Coot and 7 Mute Swans. Slim pickings, but open water is a luxury this winter in Morris County.

Snow Day Bird Notes, Mar. 5, 2015

Many thanks to Chuck Hantis for the above photo and for braving the snowy, icy, treacherous weather conditions to capture the image.

Practically everything in New Jersey was closed today. What a week, with snow Sunday afternoon and evening, two delayed-opening mornings due to snow and ice on Monday and Wednesday, a horrendous evening commute Tuesday due to a freezing rain/sleet/snow event  and a snow day, complete with a declared state of emergency, today, Thursday. By dawn Friday, the temperature forecast for the mocosocoBirds area is 7 F degrees that will feel like -7. It’s the first week of March!!!

A weather historian may have an interest in placing the winters of 2013-14 and 2014-15 in north New Jersey as two of the most brutally cold, snowy and long in recorded history, but this observer only wants the snow to melt and migration to begin. Bring it on, please!

Many feeder watchers report Pine Siskins galore (what else was one to do today as yet another snow storm and bone-chilling temperatures blanketed the region). They are daily for the past month in Morris Township totaling from 20-30 at a feeder on Kemble Mountain.

Even a scant few Common Redpolls made it to feeders today in Morris and Somerset Counties.

Anyone out and about between 4-7 PM this evening may understand the above scene: traffic in the Morristown area, and probably everywhere else in the region ,with every major road, jammed and backed up. What’s a little snow, sleet, rain and a temperature below freezing during the evening rush hour?

Seventeen days to the Vernal Equinox on March 20, 2015.

Also at Duke Island Park: the male and female Redheads, 2 Greater Scaup hens and Red-breasted Merganser continue on the Raritan River.

From Hillsborough Township, Vicki Schwartz reports Rough-legged Hawk and Red-shouldered Hawk along Beekman Lane. The farm fields along River Road, south of South Branch Rd., continue with Horned Larks in diminished numbers and the Ring-billed Gulls, Canada Geese, Mallards and Crows that are daily throughout the winter.

Up to 4 Rough-legged Hawks were seen at Negri-Nepote Native Grassland Preserve on Monday, March 3 (Jacob Socolar via eBird).

This week may be the last hurrah for Rough-legged Hawks in New Jersey this season. Below is a screen shot of an eBird data generated bar graph for Rough-legged Hawk in the entire state. Clicking on the image will take you to the live format on the eBird web site.
