Long-tailed Ducks, Cackling Geese, Dec. 4, 2013

Long-tailed Ducks at Boonton Reservoir

3 Long-tailed Ducks, 1 drake and 2 hens, were viewed late this afternoon floating on the calm sheet of glass, otherwise known as Boonton Reservoir. They were visible from the footbridge at the north end of the reservoir until they drifted out of view moving southward towards the island (J. Klizas, Jamie Glydon). Bufflehead, Common Mergansers and Ring-billed Gulls were also present.

Cackling Geese in Somerset County

As is often stated in this space, Somerset County is the Cackling Goose Capital of New Jersey, if not the entire northeastern United States. Today is a case in point. Jeff Ellerbusch found the following:

4 Cackling Geese on Opie Road in Branchburg/Hillsborough Townships. Also on Opie: Merlin, American Kestrel and 16 Horned Larks.
5 Cackling Geese at Duke Island Park, Bridgewater Twp.
6 Cackling Geese at North Branch Park, Bridgewater Twp., plus 1 adult blue morph Snow Goose.

These geese will probably remain scattered in the region throughout the winter and their numbers will be augmented, more than likely.

Tuesday Field Notes, Dec. 3, 2013

Duke Farms was active today with a sweep of the New Jersey woodpecker species (followed by their counts in parenthesis): Red-headed (1), Red-bellied (18), Yellow-bellied Sapsucker (6), Downy (12), Hairy (7), Northern Flicker (11) and Pileated (3). 100+ Fish Crows flew overhead. 172 Ring-necked Ducks were tallied on the reservoir. Also present were 6 Brown Creepers, 24 Golden-crowned Kinglets, 1 Ruby-crowned Kinglet, 41 Eastern Bluebirds, 1,500 American Robins, Eastern Towhee, Am. Tree Sparrow, Field, Savannah, Fox, Song, Swamp, White-throated Sparrows and Dark-eyed Juncos, etc. (Jeff Ellerbusch).

Budd Lake may be frozen but geese and gulls are still congregating there in the late afternoon. 725 Canada Geese, 337 Ring-billed, 252 Herring and 2 Great Black-backed Gulls were on the ice. A few more gulls were coming in at sunset. If past trends continue, gull numbers will become impressive the deeper we get into winter. 4,000 Herring Gulls were here on February 27, 2013. A Glaucous Gull spent part of March 2013 here. This is the most reliable location for Lesser Black-backed Gull in Morris County (J. Klizas).

One of the Red-necked Grebes was still present at Boonton Reservoir on Monday, Dec. 2 (David Bernstein). Two were there on Sunday, Dec. 1.

Red-necked Grebes, Red-headed Woodpeckers, Dec. 1, 2013

Two Red-necked Grebes (RNGR) were at Boonton Reservoir today. Since yesterday’s Lake Parsippany RNGR was not found at that location today, perhaps it skipped over to the nearby Reservoir joining the RNGR suspected to be here yesterday as well. This continues a string of RNGR in Morris County the past month. A Common Loon was at the reservoir as well as the usual Gadwall, Buffleheads, Common and Hooded Mergansers, Pied-billed Grebe, American Coot, Mallards, Am. Black Ducks and Gulls (mostly Ring-billed).

==========
Yesterday, Nov. 30, Roger Johnson tallied 23 Red-headed Woodpeckers at Troy Meadows. That is surely a record of some type for this region. Also present: 1 Palm Warbler, 4 Fox Sparrows. From Roger: “Juncos, White-throated, Song, and Savannah Sparrow numbers are much higher than normal for this time of year.”
==========
Today, 3 Cackling Geese were in the Van Cleef Rd. Ponds in Franklin Twp., 1 was at Selody Sod Farm, Montgomery Twp. Yesterday, 3 were at Duke Farms, Hillsborough Twp. (Jeff Ellerbusch).

Another Red-necked Grebe appeared in Morris County today, this time at Lake Parsippany (Jamie Glydon). The Grebe was literally making the rounds as it was diving and motoring around the circumference of the lake. Also present were a Bald Eagle, a few Gadwall, 3 Ring-necked Ducks, 12 Common and 31 Hooded Mergansers, 22 Ruddy Ducks, a growing number of Mute Swans and the typical Mallards and Canada Geese of the lake.

This is the third positive sighting of Red-necked Grebe in Morris County in the past two weeks:

  1. Lake Hopatcong, Nov. 14
  2. 2 at Budd Lake, Nov. 25
  3. Lake Parsippany, Nov. 30

==========
If you do not think the temperature has been cold lately, look at the lakes of north and western Morris County and you may form a different opinion. It is only November 30 with the beginning of Christmas Bird Count season two weeks away and this is the status of a sampling of Morris County lakes.

Budd Lake: frozen, 2 Ring-billed Gulls sitting on the ice this morning – nothing else.

Lake Musconetcong: 99% frozen: 1 female Lesser Scaup, 2 Hooded Mergansers, gulls, Mute Swans and Canada Geese. Nearby Furnace Pond, frequently ice-free when Lake Musconetcong is frozen, is birdless.

Lake Hopatcong: frozen north of Nolan’s Point and south of Bertrand’s Island. 1 Tundra Swan was visible among the 100+ Mute Swans in the only open portion of water in the area. Other Tundra Swans are probably here but were resting with heads tucked in. Over 600 Gulls are in and around the lake, Ring-billeds outnumbering Herring. 91 Buffleheads, a small group of Ruddy Ducks and a flyover adult Bald Eagle were all that can be considered highlights.

Mt. Hope Lake: frozen except for a very thin sliver that held 3 Ruddy Ducks, two Mute Swans and 6 Ring-billed Gulls.

Lake Parsippany: both the north end and south end have paper-thin ice. See above for the avian contents of the lake. The assumption is that the many ponds and lakes of northern Morris County are becoming frozen if not in that state already.

Boonton Reservoir remains unfrozen with the following species: 1 Common Loon, 3 Gadwall, 2 Ring-necked Ducks, 2 Lesser Scaup, 8 Bufflehead, 26 Hooded and 12 Common Mergansers, 15 Ruddy Ducks with most seen from the north end of the reservoir. A possible Red-necked Grebe was viewed but was too distant for a 100% positive identification.

6 Sandhill Cranes are in their usual haunts in Franklin Township. They are anywhere in the Randolph Road and Weston Canal Road area where there is a corn stubble field.

Chuck Hantis photographed the following Bald Eagles in the Great Swamp NWR today. Chuck:”I was driving down the road when the swamp exploded with Geese and Ducks…both Eagles are banded – one NY and the other NJ.”

Wednesday Field Notes; List of NJ CBCs, Nov. 27, 2013

Hundreds of Ring-billed and Herring Gulls continue at the Norz farm fields along River Road south of Studdiford Drive. in Hillsborough Township. They are worth checking if you are in the area. Lesser Black-backed Gull was seen here on Nov. 19.

Elsewhere in Hillsborough, the gulls have not started congregating near Homestead and Hillsborough Roads between Rt. 206 and Willow Rd. yet, but the crow numbers are impressive. Both American and Fish Crows are abundant. Large Starling flocks can be present bringing Brown-headed Cowbirds and who knows what else with them.
==========
Somerset County’s lack of lakes and other bodies of water is well understood by the local birders. What seems modest to others is precious to Somerset observers. 6 American Wigeon, 4 Am. Black Ducks, 44 Mallards, 1 No. Pintail, 1 Bufflehead and 1 Pied-billed Grebe were at Colonial Park in Franklin Township this afternoon. 1 Ring-necked and 1 Ruddy Duck were the only waterfowl at the Van Cleef Road ponds in Franklin Twp. (Jeff Ellerbusch).
==========
From Jim Mulvey:
13 Killdeer at the Lord Stirling Stable field that had the Ross’ Goose earlier this year. Many Canada Geese and Gulls, nothing else noteworthy.
==========
From Jennifer Books at Loantaka Brook Reservation yesterday, Nov. 26 :
I decided to check out Loantaka late this morning before the weather turned nasty, and was rewarded with seeing 4 Rusty Blackbirds at a relatively close distance. They were feeding under the trees near the shelter next to the pond. In addition, there were a large number of Gadwalls in the pond as well as about 10 Green-winged Teal and 3 Killdeer. Other usual suspects included many Mallards, some Ring-billed Gulls, and the resident Mute Swan.

Red-necked Grebes, Budd Lake, NJ, Nov. 25, 2013 (photo by Alan Boyd).

From Alan Boyd:
This afternoon there were 2 Red-necked Grebes on Budd Lake, back in the NW corner. There were also 28 American Wigeon and 25 Common Mergansers.
===============

There is a second report from yesterday, Nov. 24, of 6 Sandhill Cranes in Franklin Twp. These were seen behind the school at Zarephath (Annabeth Scott).
===============

The deep freeze of November is taking its toll on fresh water ponds. Lk. Parsippany is mostly covered with thin ice with small sections still open. Osborn Pond (a dammed section of the Passaic River near the Great Swamp NWR at the Morris/Somerset border) is frozen with not a bird on it. It could be spotty for waterfowl in some places going in to December.

Sunday Field Notes, Nov. 24, 2013

This is what the wind looked like before dawn with 40 mph gusts and a wind chill no warmer than 14 Fahrenheit degress (courtesy of Wind Map):

From Susan Treesh earlier today:
Six Sandhill Cranes are wading in the Millstone River right at the junction of Randolph and Weston Canal Roads in Franklin Twp. They are visible from the road, but no place to park. I parked in the office park (Riverview Tech Center) at 50 Randolph. Nobody was there today. You can walk back to a rise overlooking the Canal & River from a parking lot (I disturbed a feasting No. Harrier in the process).

Sandhill Cranes, Franklin Twp., Nov. 23, 2013 (photo by Kurtis Himmler).

For what is thought to be the seventh consecutive year, Sandhill Cranes have returned again in Franklin Township. They appear near the end of November as far as is known. Kurtis Himmler found 4 Sandhill Cranes on Weston Canal Road behind the Pillar of Fire, Zarephath. At one point, the birds flushed and landed out of view. They can be found anywhere in the Randolph Road/Weston Canal Rd. area if their pattern continues from previous years.
===============
5 Tundra Swans were viewed this morning near Nolan’s Point, Lake Hopatcong. Two of the swans took flight and headed north, probably towards Liffy Island. 126 Bufflehead are scattered in every section of the lake. This is an eBird all-time high count for Morris County.

330 Ruddy Ducks continue at Mt. Hope Lake. Waterfowl diversity is low there with only a few Gadwall, Ring-necked Ducks, Hooded Merganser and Am. Coot present (J. Klizas)
===============
Great Swamp NWR had 80 Gadwall and 55 American Wigeon, 7 No. Shovelers, 40 No. Pintail, 7 Hooded Mergansers, 1 Ruddy Duck and Mallards Am. Black Ducks and Wood Ducks. Approximately 2,000 European Starlings and 13,0000 Common Grackles were seen from the overlook on Pleasasnt Plains Rd. (Jeff Ellerbusch).

From Alan Boyd:
At least 4 Tundra Swans continue today, viewable from The Windlass Restaurant off Nolan’s Point Rd., Lake Hopatcong. The Windlass appears to be closed until 2/14 so it’s a good place to park for now.
==========
Waterfowl at the D&R Towpath, Franklin Twp.: 1,500 Canada Geese, 38 Am. Black Duck, 204 Mallards, 2 No. Pintail, 2 Bufflehead and, 13 Common Mergansers (Jeff Ellerbusch).
==========
From Vicki Schwartz in Hillsborough Twp.:
Really great morning at Ann Van Middlesworth Park, Hillsborough Twp.: 2 Fox Sparrows in a mixed flock of sparrows in the hedgerow behind the backstop, a Hermit Thrush in the brushy area back of the skate park, an Eastern Towhee in the brushy area on the northeast side of the dam, Ravens calling back in the GSA depot, and 3 hawks (Cooper’s, Red-tailed, and Red-shouldered), along with the usual residents.
