Weather:
Mostly blue sky with thick haze at 3 miles and beyond. Cloud cover went
from 0% to 75% and back to 5%. Haze so thick, NYC skyline unseen all day.
Temperature range from 63º F to 76º F. Visibility to 5 miles most of the
day. Wind, light from the WSW.

Raptor Observations:
Conditions not conducive for migrants. A few (5) TV’s and BV’s (3) were
flying low over the flag pole on I-80 and the Parsippany Water Tower,
respectively just after 0950 and circled the valley periodically during the
morning. A lone, local RT circled lower over the cell tower then dove down
into the valley. The first and only migrant of the day, a Sharp-shinned
Hawk, passed at eye level in front of the ledge at 1220. One thing there
were plenty of was the invasive Stink Bug. They get into everything.

Non-raptor Observations:
White-breasted Nuthatch, Red-bellied Woodpecker, Northern Flicker,
Black-capped Chickadee, Blue jay, Raven, American Crow, Chimney Swift, and
Cedar Waxwing.

Wednesday Field Notes, Oct. 2, 2013

Highlights at the Lincoln Park Gravel Pits this afternoon: 9 Rusty Blackbirds, 2 juvenile White-crowned Sparrows, Lincoln and Savannah Sparrows, 2 Osprey, Green-winged Teal, Yellow-bellied Sapsucker and 65+ Yellow-rumped Warblers (J. Klizas).

A Connecticut Warbler was eBirded from the Tilcon Pond area near Waterloo Valley Road in Mt. Olive Twp. (Alan Boyd).

At least 5 Red-headed Woodpeckers were seen at Troy Meadows today. The juvenile Yellow-crowned Night-Heron was also seen again today at a Jefferson Road Pond, Parsippany (Julie Buechner).

A 2nd-year Bald Eagle was at the pond during the day, as well (Roger Johnson).

From Ken Hart:
Just had a nice look at a Winter Wren outside my door on Black River Rd in Long Valley this afternoon. Clear speckling on the feathers and that un-ignorable short, cocked tail. Mostly feeding on the ground in the pachysandra, and in the moss on the stone wall. Also for a few days now I’ve had a continuing Swainson’s Thrush, who seems to like eating the berries on a certain Dogwood tree. Yesterday had two Blue-headed Vireos, an immature Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, and a flock of 8 Golden-crowned Kinglets feeding in a Hemlock. As I type this, a Pileated Woodpecker is calling outside– which I hear on a near-daily basis.

A Vesper Sparrow continues at the Wagner Arboretum side of Glenhurst Meadows (David Bernstein).

From yesterday, Oct. 1:
10 species of warblers and a Vesper Sparrow were at Glenhurst Meadows Tuesday morning (Jeff Ellerbusch).

Vesper Sparrow and more Red-headed Woodpeckers, Oct. 1, 2013

The first Vesper Sparrow of the season in the mocosocoBirds region was seen today at the Wagner Arboretum garden of Glenhurst Meadows. This is one to two weeks earlier than usual for this species in the area. Based on recent early arrivals of certain species, this may be the trend for autumn 2013. 8 sparrow species were seen at Glenhurst along with both Kinglet species, 10 warbler species and 4 Red-headed Woodpeckers – and this was in the late afternoon (Jeff Ellerbusch).

15 Red-headed Woodpeckers at Troy Meadows

Forget yesterday’s total of 4 Red-headed Woodpeckers (RHWO) at Troy Meadows. Today, 15 were located between Troy Meadows Road and I-80 (Roger Johnson). Troy Meadows is a traditional RHWO hotspot when that species is on its cyclical upswing. Roger said he has not even checked some other locations that can have RHWO, so the actual count could be higher. Other species reported from Troy Meadows are Purple Finch (female), Lincoln’s, Savannah and White-crowned Sparrows.

And, finally

Yes, the juvenile Yellow-crowned Night-Heron makes it into October at Jefferson Road Pond, Parsippany (Julie Buechner).

Red-headed Woodpeckers at Troy Meadows, Sep. 30, 2013

From Roger Johnson at Troy Meadows:
At the old trap shoot area in the dead tree area – 4 adult Red-headed Woodpeckers, immature Yellow-bellied Sapsucker and Wilson’s Snipe.

One Yellow-crowned Night-Heron continues at Jefferson Road, Parsippany (Jim Mulvey).

A report from Dave Harrison on a New Jersey Audubon field trip on Saturday, Sep. 28.:
I led an NJAS field trip to the West Morris Greenway on Saturday and found some fairly good birds. Perhaps most notable was the presence of no fewer than 4 Barred Owls, all calling in broad daylight (a new personal high for me in NJ). One bird even came in close to us for a good look (both by us and by the bird). Prior to the field trip, I again visited Roxbury (AKA Mudder’s) Pond, which continues to look very interesting to me. I’m not sure I’ve seen exactly the type of habitat that is there anywhere else in the area. The only notable find was a Sora – a challenging migrant to find in the county.
West Morris Greenway is a new mile-long+ trail that runs through the Morris County Municipal Utilities Authority area just north of Black River WMA. Access is easiest from Roxbury Park along Righter Rd. Notable species there besides the owls included a Philadelphia Vireo, Wilson’s Warbler and 2 Lincoln’s Sparrow. The field trip ended up with 45 species and I had another 5 or so at the Pond beforehand. Best, David.

From Alan Boyd:
Hi Jonathan – This afternoon I had two different Connecticut Warblers at Black River WMA (Chester Twp.). I was in the NE section, coming in from the parking lot at the intersection of Ironia Rd and Catan Dr. – Alan Boyd

From Terry Caruthers:
Hi Jon – A morning walk along Pleasant Plains Rd. in the Great Swamp produced about a dozen Yellow-rumps, 15 Palm Warblers, a Winter Wren and two Lincoln’s Sparrows. On Friday, I had a possible Mississippi Kite over route 78 near Clinton, but could not stop to look for the bird. – Regards, Terry

From Dave Emma:
Hi Jonathan – There was a Wilson’s Snipe in the small pond on the left in Robert Stahl Natural Area, Bedminster this afternoon. A few Lincoln’s Sparrows were around as well. Does anyone happen to know what they are doing with this location? They got rid of one of the best sparrow bushes, and completely mowed one of the back fields.
