Connecticut Warbler, Olive-sided Flycatchers, Field Notes, Sep. 5, 2013

Connecticut Warbler at Lord Stirling Park

From Mike Hiotis at Lord Stirling Park:
This afternoon I spotted a Connecticut Warbler that popped up in front of me and flew to eye height a few yards away. As is not always the case with this species the full eye ring and long undertail coverts were shown for a nice impression. It was a brown-hooded bird. It was on the trail left of the East Observation Blind where there is field habitat on both sides of the trail maybe 75 yards past the pond…..Mike Hiotis

Olive-sided Flycatcher, Oak Meadows, Rockaway Twp., NJ, Sep. 5, 2013 (digiscoped by Jonathan Klizas).

It has been a productive season for Olive-sided Flycatchers (OSFL). Two more occurred today: Jeff Ellerbusch found one at Chimney Rock (possibly the same individual as was seen at the hawk watch yesterday by Chris Aquila). Another was at Oak Meadows in Rockaway Twp. (J. Klizas) near where an OSFL visited the Sasso Tract in August. The pictured OSFL was on a snag by Pilar Pond, down the slope from the baseball field.

The first 3 Wilson’s Snipe of the season in the mocosocoBirds region were found today at the Lincoln Park Gravel Pits. This is also the first report of Wilson’s Snipe in New Jersey, north of I-195 for the summer of 2013 based on eBird data. A juvenile Black-crowned Night-Heron was viewed before flying off to a another part of the Pits. Shorebird species are similar to those found the previous week:
Killdeer – 18
Spotted Sandpiper
Solitary Sandpiper
Lesser Yellowlegs – 3
Least Sandpiper – 5
Wilson’s Snipe – 3

The usual two Bald Eagles were present, an adult and a juvenile. A Merlin was perched near the adult Bald Eagle for a short time. Other species of interest: 4 Blue-winged Teal, 2 Green-winged Teal, 8 Great Blue Herons, 3 Great Egrets, 3 Green Herons.

Wilson’s Warblers

From Julie Buechner, Sep. 4, 2013:
I was at Hedden Park in Randolph and saw two Wilson’s Warblers in some bushes by a small stream flowing into Hedden Pond. Also spotted a Common Yellowthroat and a Warbling Vireo nearby, as well as 2 Solitary Sandpipers and a Spotted Sandpiper in the pond.

Light migration, Sep. 4, 2013

Migrating birds lit up the radar overnight with movement visible across the entire east. It held the promise of a productive morning. Instead, something was altered during the early morning hours and the mocosocoBirds region only received a modest amount of activity.

Here are some highlights from the morning at Chimney Rock – 10 species of warblers (Jeff Ellerbusch, et al):
Veery
Swainson’s Thrush – 3
Cedar Waxwing – 120
Worm-eating Warbler
Black-and-white Warbler – 3
Nashville Warbler
American Redstart – 15
Northern Parula
Magnolia Warbler – 6
Blackburnian Warbler – 2
Yellow Warbler
Chestnut-sided Warbler – 5
Black-throated Green Warbler

From Leslie Webster:
Warbler news from Loantaka Brook Reservation: A Yellow-breasted Chat popped up on the west side of Kitchell Pond at 10 AM this morning. It was in the dense bushes between the willow trees and the bridge. In addition, 2 Black-throated Green Warblers were spotted in the woods, gleaning at eye-level.

Tom Halliwell and Alan Boyd viewed a startlingly early immature Bonaparte’s Gull at Lake Musconetcong this morning. Tom says it is the earliest he has seen one at the lake.

Selody Sod Farm

An American Golden-Plover and an immature Buff-breasted Sandpiper continue at Selody Sod Farm, Montgomery Twp. (Jeff Ellerbusch, J. Klizas). Numerous Killdeer and single digit Least Sandpipers are all that remain from yesterday’s storm-related fallout. Interestingly, Jeff noted that the birds present today are the same that were at Selody before yesterday’s storm. All the storm-induced birds are gone.

Common Nighthawks

From Terry Carruthers, Sep. 2, 2013:
A good flight of Common Nighthawks this evening (Monday) over the Great Swamp with 136 counted between 6 – 7 pm from my deck on Whitebridge Rd.

Baird’s Sandpiper in Montgomery Twp., Sep. 2, 2013

Shorebirders like rain. They know rain can bring wonderful things. A case in point: earlier this afternoon mocosocoBirds published this post which describes American Golden-Plovers and a Buff-breasted Sandpiper at Selody Sod Farm in Montgomery Township. These are VERY nice species in the land of mocosocoBirds.

And then it rained. Profusely.

After the rain, Simon Lane, and later Jeff Ellerbusch, tallied the following shorebird species:

American Golden-Plover
Killdeer
Semipalmated Plover
Lesser Yellowlegs
Solitary Sandpiper
Semipalmated Sandpiper (23)
Least Sandpiper
Baird’s Sandpiper
Pectoral Sandpiper
Buff-breasted Sandpiper

This is a first known Somerset County record for Baird’s Sandpiper. Congratulations to Simon for finding it. And what a haul for Montgomery Township!

Editor’s Note: An update to the original post. A Baird’s Sandpiper was found by Mark Harris on Sep. 10, 2012 at Selody Sod Farm. The record was listed on eBirded and accepted.

Buff-breasted Sandpiper, Am. Golden-Plovers, Short-billed Dowitcher , Sep. 2, 2013

Buff-breasted Sandpiper and Am. Golden-Plovers at Selody Sod Farm

What were 3 Am. Golden-Plovers (AGPL) earlier in the morning (Robert Skrabal) became 4 in the afternoon (Jeff Ellerbusch). The season’s first Buff-breasted Sandpiper (BBSA) in the mocosocoBirds region, a juvenile, was also found at Selody Sod Farm, Montgomery Township (Mike Hiotis, J. Ellerbusch). As of 1:50 p.m., 3 of the AGPL flew off leaving one AGPL in company with the BBSA.

From August going forward, Selody Sod Farm is checked regularly so the following table is an accurate depiction of arrival dates for the past two years at Selody.

Short-billed Dowitcher at the Lincoln Park Gravel Pits

A Short-billed Dowitcher was a fly-by this morning at the Lincoln Park Gravel Pits
(Simon Lane, J. Klizas). Needless to say, this is a rare shorebird species in the mocosocoBirds region. A few other shorebirds continued before the rains came: Spotted, Solitary and 5 Least Sandpipers, 2 Greater and 1 Lesser Yellowlegs and 5 Killdeer. Yesterday’s 15 Great Egrets were at the Pits this morning but later slipped away unnoticed.

Shorebirds in Morris Co., Sep. 1, 2013

(Click on the photo for a larger image).

A visit to the Lincoln Park Gravel Pits this morning showed that the water level was ever so slightly receding, exposing slivers of potential shorebird mudflats. 1 Pectoral and 2 Least Sandpipers, 2 Greater and 1 Lesser Yellowlegs and 3+ Killdeer represented the shorebirds. A Morris County year-high count of 15 Great Egrets were in the shallows, preening or doing nothing. An appearance by a juvenile Bald Eagle barely disrupted them. The habitat may be short-lived if the rainy weather forecasts come to pass.
—————
Kitchell Pond at Loantaka Brook Reservation had Least, Solitary and Spotted Sandpipers along with Killdeer (Simon Lane).
—————
From Leslie Webster:
News from Loantaka Brook Reservation: this morning was humid, airless, and dark, but some interesting species showed up, anyway. In the woods were a Scarlet Tanager, Winter Wren, and two species of warbler: a group of at least 4 American Redstarts, and 2 Black-and-Whites. At Kitchell Pond, a Brown Thrasher and a Common Yellowthroat came into full view, as well as 1 each Killdeer and Solitary Sandpiper.

iOS Bird Migration App; Field Notes, Aug. 31, 2013

A few weeks ago, mocosocoBirds published a post, that contained various bird migration links for RADAR maps and blogs. As it turns out, Applique, via Nemesis Bird, created an iOS app that combines all of these links into one convenient application called Bird Migration. The app is built for the iPhone and iPod Touch. You can use it on an iPad if you do not mind the 2x screen size. No version exists for Android devices.

Bird Migration contains links for radar maps starting with the entire United States and drilling down to different geographical regions. It has a wind map which is a link to the wunderground.com map. There are links to the migration blogs: Nemesis Bird, Woodcreeper, Badbirdz Reloaded, North Woods BIRDAR, Birds over Portland and Tom Auer’s Blog which covers New England spilling over into the mocosocoBirds region.

Oh, it is free! It is a most useful tool for following the migration front. The link for Bird Migration in the App Store is here.

Tim Schreckengost ‘s excellent article, which is a compilation of many RADAR and migration links as well as mentioning the Bird Migration app, is at The Ultimate Guide to Migration Online.

Field Notes

35 Common Nighthawks migrated over our house in Morris Township between 7:15-7:45 p.m. They headed SSE over Kemble Mountain – mostly single birds with occasional groups of 2 and 3. We have only a narrow window of sky to view here and wonder how many actually passed through the area. At 7:50, two Eastern Screech-Owls began calling simultaneously.

60+ Common Nighthawks are reported this evening from Chatham Township (Simon Lane).

From Leslie Webster:
Report from Loantaka Brook Reservation: the following shore birds have shown up on various days and combinations during the last week: Solitary, Least, Spotted, and Semipalmated Sandpipers, as well as Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs. It was quiet warbler-wise, except for a group of Black-and-White Warblers seen on Tuesday. Some summer birds are lingering, singing fitfully: Gray Catbirds, Eastern Wood Peewee, and a few Red-eyed Vireos. The Mallard population has grown tremendously while most of the Wood Ducks have disappeared. Tufted Titmice, Carolina Wrens, American Goldfinches, and various woodpeckers are noisily abundant.
