Tundra Swans in Somerset County; Field Notes, Mar. 15, 2014

4 Tundra Swans were in a field at Opie Road in Branchburg this morning. Thanks to Chris Thomas, Andrew Lucas and Bobby Skrabal for reporting them. The swans were gone by late afternoon. This is a rare species for Somerset County and the first reported since 2011 when one Tundra Swan spent approximately 10 days on Opie Road.

Also on Opie Rd.: 28 American Pipits were recorded (B. Skrabal). Thousands of Canada Geese are in the area but no rare species were detected. Northern Pintails are making a push through Somerset as 127 were found in a field just north of Opie Road by Jeff Ellerbusch. Other smaller groups of Northern Pintails were found throughout the area.

A Horned Grebe was on the Raritan River opposite Duke Island Park this afternoon (J. Ellerbusch). Red-breasted Mergansers continue to be reported on the Raritan River.

3 Cackling Geese were at Duke Farms (J. Ellerbusch).

3 Red-headed Woodpeckers continue at Colonial Park (Chris Thomas).

A drake Blue-winged Teal was found at Ravine Lake in Far Hills (J. Ellerbusch).
