Redheads in Chatham; 900 Common Mergansers at Split Rock, Dec. 22, 2012

Simon Lane found 2 Redheads this morning at the pond on Tanglewood Lane in Chatham Township. This is the road to the township recycling center. 8 Buffleheads were also present. A visit late in the morning by this author did not turn up the Redheads. 4 Northern Shovelers, 16 Ring-necked Ducks, 8 Buffleheads and 10 Hooded Mergansers were present.
======================================
A cold and blustery Split Rock Reservoir in Rockaway Township held a raft of approximately 900 Common Mergansers this morning. The Common Mergansers were in the center portion of the reservoir. 260 Ruddy Ducks were in their usual place near the western end of the reservoir. 1 Herring and three Ring-billed Gulls were the only other birds found.

Sandhill Cranes and Waterfowl in Franklin Township, Dec. 19, 2012

5 Sandhill Cranes on Randolph Road, Franklin Township were witnessed by Jeff Ellerbusch this afternoon. This is the same number of cranes that spent the winter of 2011-12 in and around the same location. The Cranes have been seen sporadically since late November, usually in groups of three and two. There is no guarantee of viewing the Cranes as there is a plethora of corn-stubble fields in the region providing many feeding and hiding spots.

Elsewhere, Jeff found a female Northern Shoveler, 1 American Coot, 2 Ruddy Ducks and 5 Ring-necked Ducks on the southernmost pond on Van Cleef Rd. 1 Bufflehead and 2 American Wigeon were at Colonial Park. As modest as these species seem, they are good finds in duck-habitat-starved Somerset County. Where it has an abundance of geese, Somerset County has a paucity of ducks.
====================================
At noon, no geese were seen at the corner of Lamington Rd. and Black River Rd., the Ross’s Goose spot.

From Ken Hart:
What appeared to be the Ross’s Goose may have been present among the Canadas and one Snow Goose at 4:45 PM today in the corn stubble field at Lamington & Black River Roads. Big, scattered flocks were landing between 4:30 and 5PM, perhaps a thousand geese total, with more coming before I left. I couldn’t positively ID the possible Ross’s at that distance. It was pure white to the Snow Goose’s slightly gray upper side, and waddled around much faster and more actively than the surrounding Canadas, and appeared slightly smaller than the Snow Goose. Anyone arriving at by 4:30 (especially with a scope) might have better luck.

Lark Sparrow continues in Hillsborough Township, Dec. 19, 2012

From Alan Mart:

It took 45 mins, but the Lark Sparrow made a brief but very satisfying appearance this morning in the previously described hedgerow on Hillsborough Road. It was kind enough to fly out, perch in the sun and give me an unobstructed view for about 5 secs before returning into the hedgerow.

140 Hooded Mergansers at Lake Musconetcong, Dec. 18, 2012

From Alan Boyd at Lake Musconetcong

Hi Jonathan,

Late this afternoon there were 140 Hooded Mergansers on the lake. Best viewing is from Musconetcong Ave on the Stanhope side of the lake.

Three adult Bald Eagles were also present.

Alan Boyd

[Editor’s note: Stanhope is in Sussex County but the lake is the border between Morris and Sussex counties. 140 Hooded Mergansers is the most ever recorded in the eBird database for Morris County.]

Cackling Geese, Winter Wrens in Bridgewater, Dec. 18, 2012

From John J. Collins:

Today I went to Duke Island Park, Bridgewater, and saw 5 CACKLING GEESE in the Raritan River along with 1000’s of Canada Geese. The Cacklings were located on the south side of the river just east of the rapids. This area can be accessed by parking in the Jaycee parking area. Also present in the park were at least 2 WINTER WRENS. At the Robert St. parking area there were 6 KILLDEER standing in the small area of the river that wasn’t submerged by the rising waters.

A RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH continues in my yard here in Raritan. It’s been here for 2 months now and obviously plans on staying for the winter as it is stashing peanuts and sunflower seeds from my feeders.

Lark Sparrow continues in Hillsborough Township, Dec. 18, 2012

The Lark Sparrow found yesterday by Jeff Ellerbusch continues this afternoon in Hillsborough Township. The location is the hedgerow east of the driveway for Hillsborough Farm on Hillsborough Rd. The Lark Sparrow and accompanying White-crowned and other Sparrows can spend long periods hidden in the hedgerow so patience is necessary. The area is private property so please view from the side of the road.

There has been no report of the Lamington Ross’s Goose today. A quick drive past Randolph Rd. on Franklin Township did not reveal any Sandhill Cranes.

Lark Sparrow in Hillsborough Township – 1st known Somerset Co. record, Dec. 17, 2012

Geese have been in the news lately. A Pink-footed Goose in Hunterdon (and hypothetically in Somerset) and a bi-county Ross’s Goose in Somerset and Hunterdon made the rounds. A Barnacle Goose was reported in Mercer County during the past weekend. What is a birder to do but to check out a flock of geese while driving agricultural roads in Hillsborough Township? This is what Jeff Ellerbusch did this afternoon, but what he found instead is the first known and documented record of a Lark Sparrow in Somerset County. The Lark Sparrow was found near the hedgerow located east of the driveway to Hillsborough Farm on Hillsborough Road in Hillsborough Township. The Lark Sparrow and the many White-crowned and Song Sparrows feed on the ground next to the hedgerow. The farm is private property so please stay off the grounds. The birds can be viewed from the side of the road. The bird was still present when Jeff and I left at 4 p.m. Beware of two things:
1. With the construction of the Hillsborough Town Center, the re-routing of Rt. 206 and the closure of Homestead Rd., Hillsborough Rd. can be very busy with all types of vehicular traffic.
2. There are many (10+) juvenile White-Crowned Sparrows present. Be careful in correctly identifying the Lark Sparrow. A few adult White-crowned Sparrows are also present as well as Song, Savannah, White-throated (1) and House Sparrows. The birds can be maddeningly difficult to see in the grasses and vegetation. Occasionally they flush into the hedgerow for short periods. The white tail feathers of the Lark Sparrow are obvious once they are seen.

A stated previously in this post, this is the first known and documented record of Lark Sparrow in Somerset County as amazing as that reads.

Lark Sparrow, Hillsborough Township, NJ, Dec. 17, 2012. First known Somerset County record. Found and photographed by Jeff Ellerbusch.

Ross’s Goose continues in Somerset County, Dec. 17, 2012

Michael Rehman eBirded that at 7:47 this morning the Ross’s Goose lifted off at Cushetunk Lake in Hunterdon County and flew off to the northeast with Canada Geese. After 8:25 a.m., Simon Lane refound the Ross’s Goose in Lamington at the location it was found yesterday: the corn stubble field at the corner of Lamington Rd. and Black River Rd. If yesterday’s pattern is duplicated, the goose will return to Cushetunk Lake sometime in the late afternoon.

Ross’s Goose in Somerset County, Dec. 16, 2012

Jeff Ellerbusch found a Ross’s Goose this afternoon in Lamington in northwestern Somerset County. The Ross’s Goose, 7 Snow Geese and eventually 3,000 Canada Geese were in the corn stubble field at the corner of Lamington Road and Black River Road. The field is private property but the birds are easily viewable from the sides of the road. This is 2 Decembers in succession for Ross’s Goose in Somerset County. In 2011, a Ross’s Goose spent the day at Duke Island Park in Bridgewater.

Red Crossbills in Bridgewater, Dec. 12, 2012

From Mike Hiotis:

Hey Jonathan,
Letting you know while walking the dog in the yard this morning I watched 7 noisy birds land in my neighbor’s Fir trees. I had time to get to the car for my binoculars and see that 3 of the 7 birds were Red Crossbills. They were in the tree approx. 1 minute before setting off to the west.
