2012 – A Birding Year in Review for Morris and Somerset Counties

Mocosocobirds presents a 2012 Year in Review for Morris and Somerset counties. Included are high counts, arrival dates and other records of interest. Records are compiled from the mocosocobirds reports, personal correspondences and the eBird database.  These reviews can be updated as needed since they are Internet publications. If the reader knows of additional records or corrections they are urged to notify mocosocobirds through the Bird Reporter.

Residents of Morris and Somerset Counties will remember 2012 as the Year of Sandy and all of the calamities that resulted from that storm. Nonetheless, birders recorded 231 species in Morris County and 245 in Somerset County as of this date.

Snow Buntings at Glenhurst Meadows, Dec. 31, 2012

From Mike Newlon:

At Glenhurst Meadows this morning (12/31) a flock of about 40 Horned Larks and 2 Snow Buntings came in to a patch of bare gravel in the Wagner Farm parking lot. Only stayed for a few minutes though. The mound by the silos, where the old barn used to be, is still holding sparrows – today many juncos and Song sparrows, 2 Tree sparrows, 1 Savannah, 1 goldfinch. Much of the lower part of Glenhurst is flooded and frozen.

A Second Rough-legged Hawk at the Great Swamp N.W.R., Dec. 31, 2012

A second Rough-legged Hawk appeared late this morning at the Overlook on Pleasant Plains Road. Sammy found it and Simon Lane returned to snap a few iPhone digi-scoped pictures. This one is a dark-phased, or as Simon puts it, “A dark-darkie”. It was eventually chased off by crows.

The post about the first Rough-legged Hawk is here.

Rough-legged Hawk at Great Swamp N.W.R., Dec. 31, 2012

Simon Lane found a light-phase Rough-legged Hawk at the Overlook on Pleasant Plains Road this morning. Jamie Glydon and I were able view it with him. It perched on the distant snags in the vicinity of the defunct heronry. It occasionally flew short distances, always returning to a perch. As we left, it was perched on a snag on the “left” side of the overlook viewing area. As I write this, some text messages report that there may be a dark-phase there as well.

25 American Pipits were directly in front of the overlook. A Merlin was on White Bridge Road before flying off.

Interesting Goose in Somerset Co.: Ross’s?; Ross’s x Snow?, Dec. 28, 2012

Goose season is in full swing. Somerset, Hunterdon and Mercer Counties have had everything from Barnacle to Pink-footed to Snow Geese and all that is in between. In between takes on a different meaning with a goose that Jeff Ellerbusch found this afternoon at Lincoln Avenue Park in Manville. At least 2,000 Canada Geese populated the park as well as one attractive white goose with black primaries. Superficially based on size alone, one might have twitched this as a Ross’s Goose and left it at that. If you know Jeff, superficial is neither in his vocabulary nor his identification methodology. Studying the bird for hours was not enough to create a 100% positive identification. Pouring over photographs later in the day only confounded the issue: pure Ross’s or Ross’s x Snow Goose.

First of all, it certainly is not a Snow Goose (SNGO). The individual has juvenile Ross’s Goose (ROGU) traits. The size and proportions fit ROGO. The neck appears short enough to be a ROGU. It is with the head and the bill where the identification becomes problematical. The bill looks more elongated than purely stubby. There appears to be a suggestion of a grin patch. The head shape could be rounded as in ROGU or more flattened as in SNGO but photos are misleading especially when take from a distance and different angles present different perspectives. Jeff’s original impression in the field was hybrid, Ross x Snow. After spending an evening studying pictures the 2-man consensus agrees with that assumption…then again maybe not. There isn’t any concrete certainty. Hopefully the goose will stay in the area. A few pictures are presented below. Constructive comments are appreciated.

All photos are by Jeff Ellerbusch. The pictures are displayed in a gallery format. Click on a photo to start the sequence. Cackling Geese at Duke Island Park; Common Redpoll at Jockey Hollow, Dec. 28, 2012

Somerset County, especially Bridgewater Township, is strengthening its hold on the title of Cackling Goose Capital of New Jersey. Jeff Ellerbusch had the same 10 Cackling Geese at Duke Island Park that he found on Dec. 24. They are keeping to groups of 7 and 3. The Cackling Geese are keeping company with 2,500 Canada Geese on the grounds of the park.

Scattered reports of Common Redpolls continue to appear in the mocosocoBirds area. A Common Redpoll was calling as it flew over the peak of 700 ft. high Mt. Kemble in Jockey Hollow, Harding Township this afternoon.

Report of the 77th Boonton Christmas Bird Count on Dec. 23, 2012

The Boonton Christmas Bird Count occurred on Sunday, December 23, 2012. 37 participants logged many hours searching for birds to add to the count. A warm and hearty “Thank You!” to all of the observers who make this endeavor happen and succeed.

The entire count report and data are at mocosocobirds.com at this link.
The full address is:
https://mocosocobirds.com/birds-of-morris-county-n-j/boontoncbc/2012-2/.

The full report is not part of this post for a few reasons:
1. It is long.
2. There is a lot of HTML formatting that gets stripped in an email post.
3. Corrections may be necessary. The web page serves as the official document and can be edited as needed.

In brief, despite flooded conditions and lack of natural concentration points (all bodies of water were open; no snow cover at all) the indefatigable band of participants managed to find 96 species plus 2 more count week species.

Some of the highlights are Greater White-fronted Goose, Cackling Goose, record numbers of Snow Geese and Common Raven. The complete report is at https://mocosocobirds.com/birds-of-morris-county-n-j/boontoncbc/2012-2/.

Greater White-fronted Goose on Boonton CBC, Dec. 23, 2012

A Greater White-fronted Goose (GWFG) was watched this afternoon at Foote’s Pond on James Street in Morristown. Kevin Lapsey and Florence Klecha were covering this as part of the 77th Boonton Christmas Bird Count. The GWFG was watched from 3:20-3:45 p.m. when it took off and flew west with the 150 Canada Geese that were also in the pond. This is only the second record of GWFG in the 77 year history of the count. A complete report of today’s count will be published once all of the data is received.
