Ea. Meadowlark and Am. Pipits in Morris Co., Oct 10, 2012

An Eastern Meadowlark was found late this afternoon by Jamie Glydon at Veteran’s Memorial Park in Whippany. There are scant few reports for the county in 2012 as this species has practically vacated Morris County. Veterans Memorial Park is a proven Meadowlark location in October since 2010. Jamie’s records on these dates are:
7 on Oct. 20, 2010
2 on Oct. 21, 2010
1 on Oct. 26, 2011
1 on Oct. 10, 2012
Keeping with the pattern of 2012’s migration, October 10 is an early date.

The American Pipits continue at Briarwood Manor’s grassy field off Jefferson Road in Whippany. Jamie Glydon found 30 yesterday and at least 25 were present today.

Jamie also birded Sayre’s Farm in the morning. Ruby-crowned Kinglets, Tennessee Warbler, Common Yellowthroat, Magnolia, Palm and Yellow-rumped Warblers joined Savannah, Song, Lincoln’s, Swamp, White-throated, White-crowned Sparrows and 1 Purple Finch.

American Pipits in Morris, Oct. 8, 2012

Traffic was bad early this evening on Jefferson Road in Whippany, so Jamie Glydon decided to avoid it by turning around in the Birchwood Manor parking lot. A Field Sparrow caught his eye and then he heard American Pipits – 30 to be exact as he counted them when they flushed – a pleasant traffic diversion indeed. The Pipits found Sunday along Rockaway Valley Road in Denville Township were not relocated today.
—————–
A brief tour of the Tourne in Boonton/Denville Townships late this afternoon turned up the following:
Wood Ducks, Green-winged Teal, Osprey, Cooper’s Hawk, Yellow-bellied Sapsucker and Eastern Phoebe at the Beaver Swamp. Sharp-shinned Hawk, American Kestrel, 10 Northern Flickers, 20 Palm Warblers and 12 Yellow-rumped Warblers at the Sparrow Fields on CR603.

Sparrows at Finderne Wetlands; Lincoln’s Sparrow in Morris Township, Oct. 8, 2012

From Tom Smith:
There were good numbers of sparrows today at Finderne Wetlands – the bulk of them were Song, Swamp and Savannah, but I was able to find among them one first-year White-Crowned and 2 Bobolinks. Also there were plenty of Palm Warblers, a huge flock of Goldfinches, and a Kestrel.

Sayre’s Farm today didn’t have much in the way of numbers or variety, but among the scattered Palms, Phoebes and Song Sparrows I was able to locate one Lincoln’s.

American Kestrels in Bedminster Township, Oct. 8, 2012

From Ken Hart:
Stopped by the Robert J. Stahl Natural Area, in Bedminster, today for only 20 minutes around 5PM, and saw six American Kestrels either hunting over the fields or perched at the tops of small trees. At one point, all 6 were perched (3 in one tree alone), in close proximity to each other, easily visible as I stood near the abandoned silos. At the right times of year (Sept-Oct, perhaps other times as well), it’s not difficult to see many Kestrels at this location. If they’re not seen flying, check the tops of the lone trees or tall shrubs scattered throughout the field. Also present, at one of the two ponds, was a Green Heron– likely the one I’ve seen several times before in the past month.

Sunday report: Pipits, Purple Finches and Sparrows, Oct. 7, 2012

The species of the day are American Pipits, Purple Finches and Sparrow spp. Jamie Glydon found a flock of 50 American Pipits (AMPI) in a private field at the corner of Faber Hill Rd. and Rockaway Valley Rd. in Denville Township. The AMPI were visible from the road. Jamie also found an adult White-crowned Sparrow along with 9 Savannah Sparrows and 4 Am. Kestrels at Florham Fields. 4 Golden-crowned Kinglets, a Black-and-white Warbler, 6 Yellow-rumped Warblers and continuing Red-breasted Nuthatches were at Jonathan’s Woods in Denville Township.

Dawn at the top of the Tourne in Boonton Township didn’t create the mini-fallout that was hoped for. Red-breasted Nuthatches, a Golden-crowned Kinglet, Blackpoll and Yellow-rumped Warblers were the only identified species coming onto the mountain at daybreak. The beaver swamp had 20 Green-winged Teal and at least 25 Wood Ducks.

Sayre’s Farm in Morris Township had foraging Purple Finches seemingly everywhere one looked. The count was 25 but easily could have been more. Also present were a singing Winter Wren, Red-eyed Vireo, Nashville Warbler, Common Yellowthroats, Northern Parula, Magnolia, Palm and Yellow-rumped Warblers. 3 Lincoln’s Sparrows and numerous Song, Swamp, White-throated and Chipping Sparrows joined an immature White-crowned Sparrow.

Jeff Ellerbusch and Mike Newlon worked Glenhurst Meadows in Warren Township this morning. Vesper Sparrow was a highlight as well as a continuing Grasshopper Sparrow, 21 American Pipts, 68 Purple Finches and 5 Pine Siskins. 110 Cedar Waxwings, 35 Yellow-rumped Warblers, 18 Palm Warblers, 80 Blue Jays, 50 Am. Robins, 5 raptor species, 7 Great Blue Hearons, etc. illustrate that there were impressive numbers of individuals at Glenhurst Meadows today.

From Vicki Schwartz:
I had a good variety of birds at Ann Van Middlesworth Park in Hillsborough this morning (10/7): 10+ warblers, including Tennessee, Nashville, Blackpoll, Pine, Palm, Magnolia, bt-green, bt-blue, yellow-rumped and prairie; also purple finches (4 females), red-breasted nuthatch, both kinglets, ravens, black ducks, and the usual residents.
